Paris Vacation..Musee Du Louvre
2008-12-08 09:23:00
Musee Du LouvreThis huge, rambling Museum has collections of Oriental,Egyptian,Greek,Etrusca-n and Roman antiquities, scultpure, objets d'art such as porcelain and European paintings.I avoided the crowds and the cold winds waiting above ground at the pyramid entrance by using the exit from the Palais Royal-Musee du Louvre metro station. While there still was a queue at the entrance gates to the Museum at least I could wait in warmer surroundings than above ground.I took this shot to show what a huge place the Louvre is.Even though I set out to only see a few things it took the best part of a day to accomplish my plan.I took but a few moments to glance at the Mona Lisa, surrounded by camera touting Chinese tourists and encased in glass which reflected the many camera flashes aimed at it.If anything did surprise me about the portrait it was how small and mundane it actually is.I was more interested in another famous exhibit the Venus de Milo.Again it attracted a crowd of admirers often t...

Louvre Museum (Musee du Louvre) Paris France Kings, revolutionaries, conquerors and ministers; all worked for enriching it; and their works did not go waste; Louvre remains as the most famous museum in the world. Louvre Museum located between Rue de Rivoli -Paris’s commercial street with the most fashionable shopping arcades- and River Seine. It was originally intended to be a fortress. But its fate was to go on changing roles with the historical events that took place in France. Philip Augustus (1180 -1223) built it as a fortress (1190) to defend the land from Anglo-Norman attacks. As the time changed the building had to undergo 800 years of alternations to play roles like; a fortress, palace, prison and finally the present role as the leading museum of the world housing Mona Lisa! The Kings The idea of a public museum was the child of La Font de Saint Yvonne who voiced it his article; it worked with beginning of one in Luxemburg Palace; but Yvonne consistently ...

Louvre: The Unfinished Task
2007-05-21 12:47:00
It is not humanly possible to finish the Louvre in one day, so it has become my collective task to preside over the museum a wing a visit. It started from the Italian and French paintings, to Egytian Arts to Arabic Arts until last Saturday my task was complete with the Napoleon III's apartment on the Richelieu wing right on the top the Cafe Marly. This apartment of the French version of the Last Emporer is extremely striking, albeit a little too elaborate for my taste. Pictured above, Me having Headache already in the first room. The quintessentially Napoleon III style is what is called Pastiche - an imitation to the past styles. Here, I shall take you on a tour, This is an imitation of a Renaissance Dining Room, grim but regalAn Imitation of a Louis XVI Salon, observe the ribbon motives both on the top of the Canape and on the upholstery, as well as the symmetrical paneling of the walls. This third example is the Grand Salon imitating that of the Louis XV style, bent legged chairs a...

Arab Conquests Finished Off the Ancient East, according to the Louvre
2007-05-01 11:37:00
The famous Louvre Museum in Paris admits that the Arab Conquests, the coming of Islam, represent a discontinuity --a breach, a sharp turning point-- in the history of Oriental civilization. In fact, the Arab Conquests finished off, wrecked, in plain English, the ancient East. Here is how the Department of Oriental Antiquities of the Louvre describes itself in its galleries[first English, then French original].Collections of the Louvre - Department of Oriental Antiquities"The Department of Oriental Antiquities is devoted to the ancient civilizations of the countries of the Near and Middle East, from the birth of villages more than 10,000 years ago until the arrival of Islam. Starting with the IIIrd Millenium, the same written culture, the cuneiform, was spread throughout the ancient East, including Egypt."Collections du Louvre - Antiquités Orientales?Le département des Antiquités orientales est consacré aux civilisations anciennes des Pays du Proche et Moyen-Orient, depuis la naissan...

2007-03-04 04:05:00
Have you ever been to Paris? Do you dream of visiting the Louvre? What if I told you that you could have a taste of the Louvre, but in Korea? That dream of yours is now a reality. Since last October, there has been the Louvre exhibition at the National Museum of Korea. This exhibition marks the first anniversary of the museum's existence and also marks the 120 years of diplomatic relations between South Korea and France. The National Museum of Korea is the largest museum in Asia. It is one of the sixth largest museums in the world. Within its first four days of opening, 116,000 visitors had visited the museum. I discovered the exhibit was on at the museum after reading about it at I'm A Seoul Man. It sounded like an interesting experience as these works of art usually can only be seen in the Louvre in Paris. Read here for getting the most out of your visit to the museum. The subway stop is Yichon Station if you want to visit the museum (take exit 4). Walk about 100 meters and you'l...
