Briefs: Giants pitcher Lowry may not return in '08
2008-06-05 01:52:00 Wednesday's MLB news briefs: San Francisco Giants left-hander Noah Lowry had another MRI exam on his surgically repaired throwing forearm and won't be pitching any time soon -- maybe not at all this season.

Odds And Ends: Hamilton, Lowry, Brewers, Tejada
2008-05-03 11:31:00 I'm not so happy about kicking off the day with an odds and ends post, but what can I say? I can't go around making up rumors. Evan Grant talks about how well the Josh Hamilton acquisition has worked out. I say acquisition, because the trade worked out smashingly for the Reds, too. Looks like there won't be a six-man rotation in San Fran anytime soon. Noah Lowry isn't throwing anymore, as the pins and needles in his arm have returned. He could miss the entire first half of the season. So much for being a trade candidate. Brewers GM Doug Melvin has said that the team will look for pitching, but not to expect anything. It's a seller's market right now. In the meantime, David Bush takes a spot in the rotation, and Jeff Weaver remains an option. Miguel Tejada promised a sick kid he'd hit a homer, and came through. I could never make such a promise. How could you live with yourself if you failed? Posted by Joe Pawlikowski, who writes for River Ave. Blues, a Yankees blog (though...

Giants? Lowry has MRI after ?tingling? in injured forearm (AP)
2008-04-22 03:53:00 San Francisco Giants left-hander Noah Lowry had an MRI on Monday after feeling a tingling sensation in his injured forearm. Odds And Ends: Lowry, Street, Farnsworth, Roberts (oh no!)
2008-04-19 13:00:00 Just a few loose links for Saturday morning. Billy Beane has talked to Alan Hendricks, agent for closer Huston Street, about an extension. However, they have been informal talks, with no specifics to mention. Don't expect much movement on this front until we get deeper into the season and see where the A's really stand. Brian Roberts is relieved now that the trade rumors are dead. "I know where I'm going to be on a nightly basis now, at least," Roberts said. "It is a relief because I think everybody wants stability in their life, but I understand that doesn't always happen. If it comes up again, I'll deal with it." Brian Sabean talked about the possibility of a six-man rotation once Noah Lowry returns to action in May. The article says that this "ensure that the youngest and most prized starters, Cain and Lincecum, are not overtaxed in a rebuilding season." But you still need them to get their innings in. Lincecum, for instance, pitched 177.1 innings last year. You'd like to ...

Lowry will get first big-league start at third base for Sox
2008-04-15 16:41:00 Barring a change in plans, Jed Lowrie will make his big-league debut Tuesday night for the Boston Red Sox, most likely at third according to the Boston Globe. With Sean Casey just 3 for 21 (.143) against Cleveland's starter tonight, Paul Byrd, Francona said he was thinking of moving Kevin Youkilis back to first, with Lowrie playing third. Not a bad birthday present for Lowrie, who turns 24 Thursday."I've been taking most of my ground balls at third," he said. "A lot of the early work I've been doing has been all at third. A few at short, just to stay fresh so I don't forget." Lowrie, who played two games at third last season for Pawtucket, said the extra work at the position with infield coach Luis Alicea is paying dividends. "The more work, the more comfortable I get over there," he said. "It's always a work in progress, but I feel pretty comfortable over there."

Giants | Lowry may have same injury as NFL QB
2008-03-11 12:57:00 Daniel Brown, of the San Jose Mercury News, reports the San Francisco Giants are trying to determine if SP Noah Lowry (arm) has the same injury NFL QB Tim Rattay had as a member of the San Francisco 49ers in 2004. Rattay had a hard time gripping a football because his muscles were too tight. Lowry and Rattay had similar surgeries to try and fix the problem. The recovery time will likely be different because Rattay had the surgery after the season. The Giants and 49ers have been comparing notes to see if the injuries are similar. The Giants estimate Lowry will be out until mid-April.

Giants left Lowry needs surgery on pitching arm
2008-03-07 13:33:00 Manager Bruce Bochy tried to put the best face on Thursday's news that Noah Lowry will undergo surgery on his throwing arm today. Bochy termed the procedure minor, said Lowry might begin throwing "in two, maybe three weeks" and could return to the mound in late April. But the truth is, Lowry has been diagnosed with a very unusual injury for a baseball player, called exertional compartment syndrome. The Giants have not been able to find another pitcher who has had the same surgery, and their prognosis is more of a guess. Thus, a team pinning its hopes for 2008 on a stalwart rotation will open the year without its biggest winner (14) from 2007.Still, Bochy seemed relieved that the Giants finally believe they know why Lowry has battled tightness and weakness in his left arm since last season, and why he walked nine batters in one spring training game because he could not grip the baseball.

Giants Shut Down Lowry
2008-03-05 21:55:00 Noah Lowry's recent bout with wildness has had people wondering whether the 27 year old lefty has gone Rick Ankiel, or if he possibly has a serious elbow issue. The Giants are hoping it's neither, but they are shutting him down for a while to hopefully get a grasp on some elbow tendinitis issues that have been bothering him. Lowry had to cut short his 2007 season by a month due to elbow stiffness and Bruce Bochy is wondering if he's fully recovered yet. Anytime there are on going elbow problems, you can't help but thinking of the worst case scenario which is the ligament transplant operation that all pitchers fear, Tommy John Surgery. I'm not saying that I think Lowry will eventually need the surgery, but if he comes back in a few weeks and is still having issues, the question may be raised. Going into the off-season, Lowry was talked about as being the most likely trading chip for the Giants in their search for offense, but other GM's had their questions about his health an e...
Giants | Lowry has wrist tendinitis
2008-03-05 16:56:00 The Associated Press reports San Francisco Giants SP Noah Lowry (wrist) has been diagnosed with tendinitis in his left wrist and has been sent back to San Francisco to meet with a hand specialist. He is expected to be inactive for three or four days.

Lowry Implodes In 8-6 Rangers Win Over Giants
2008-03-04 09:57:00 Bittersweet. It’s an appropriate way to describe the Texas Rangers’ narrow escape from Scottsdale, Arizona on Monday afternoon with an 8-6, 10-inning victory over the San Francisco Giants. Although the win itself might have been cause for some half-hearted celebration among the visiting clubhouse contingent at Scottsdale Stadium, the immediate circumstances by which that win came to ...
Odds and Ends: Lowry, Mantei, Inge
2008-03-04 09:32:00 Link time! The White Sox had a scout watching Noah Lowry's disaster yesterday. Maybe that affected him. Todd Zolecki says Ruben Amaro Jr. is the frontrunner for the Phillies' GM job next year, with Mike Arbuckle the other main candidate. Meanwhile, Bob Ford thinks the Phils should've paid $200K for Cole Hamels' happiness. Looks like Matt Mantei's comeback attempt may come to an end. Despite Jim Leyland's comments, you have to think Dave Dombrowski will troll the market for relievers. Leyland also talked about how he's not going to force Brandon Inge to catch. Jeff Sackmann discusses some clubs that would stand to gain around three wins by signing Barry Bonds. Jonathan Papelbon's contract is likely to be renewed today, and he's probably not getting $900K. Tom Haudricourt offers up a primer on renewals, arbitration, free agency, all that stuff.

Lowry walks 9 of 12 batters in Giants? 6-4 loss to the Rangers (AP)
2008-03-04 02:01:00 Noah Lowry walked nine of the first 12 hitters he faced Monday in the San Francisco Giants’ 6-4 loss to the Texas Rangers in 10 innings. Lowry threw 24 pitches before a Texas hitter took a swing. He went through the order once without an official at-bat — along with the walks, Ben Broussard and ...

Lowry shows no signs of arm woes
2008-02-16 13:32:00 Noah Lowry threw his first official bullpen session of the season on a miserably cold and wet morning Friday with no evidence of the forearm tightness that forced him to miss the final month of 2007 according to the San Francisco Chronicle. He might argue with the word "forced," saying he could have pitched had the games meant something. That made two straight seasons shortened by injury. In 2006, Lowry hurt his oblique muscle in his first start. He did not reach 160 innings in either year after surpassing 200 in 2005. Lowry has spent considerable time with the Giants' medical staff discussing ways to strengthen his arm.Lowry's 14-8 record on a 71-win team is more remarkable considering he did not make a start after Aug. 29. Yet he was not satisfied. Lowry is penciled in as the No.3 starter for the Giants behind Barry Zito and Matt Cain.

Lowry Failing To Draw Interest
2008-02-15 10:02:00 Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News discusses the Noah Lowry situation. On the surface, a 27 year-old lefty who won 14 games with a sub-4.00 ERA would seem to be a hot commodity. However, Baggarly says teams were scared off by Lowry's ugly 1.0 K/BB ratio and August elbow tenderness. Lowry's on the hook for $2.25MM in '08 and $4.25MM in '09, with a 2010 club option for $6.25MM. Baggarly notes that the Giants "remain active in trade talks." Given that it's 2008 and not 1988, Brian Sabean isn't going to fleece any GM based on Lowry's win total or ERA. I'm starting to think that a trade for Joe Crede straight up might be fair, after all.

Odds and Ends: Cano, Colon, Lowry
2008-01-23 11:39:00 Here are some links I've rounded up this morning. In theory, Robinson Cano would be open to a long-term deal. River Ave. Blues recently took a look at how historically good Cano has been so far, and suggest the Yankees lowballed him with their arbitration submission. Baseball Prospectus' Derek Jacques saw Bartolo Colon pitch in the Dominican League Finals, and lends his evaluation. Colon was not impressive, but not terrible. It doesn't seem like he will get the two-year deal he wants. The Brewers will bring Abraham Nunez to camp. Versatile, but a drain on offense. Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune notes that the White Sox aren't done yet. The Joe Crede situation should linger into spring. Gonzales also mentions that the Giants are "listening to offers for Noah Lowry." A factual look at whether Omar Minaya really stockpiles Latin American players. The Astros can't settle their gaps with Mark Loretta or Jose Valverde, and Ed Wade expects the team...

Could Lowry be moved ?
2007-10-20 06:31:00 Glen Dickey of the Examiner takes a look at the state of the San Francisco Giants and what they'll need to part with to improve. The Giants field the oldest positional team in the National League with a 40 y/o SS, 37 y/o 2nd & 1B, 36 y/o CF, 33 y/o 3rd & RF. The Giants need younger, major league ready players possibly with power potential. We have several players that just might interest them in Milledge, Ahern, Gotay, Johnson, Carp and Gomez ( I certainly don't mean all for one, these are just the names that they would be interested in, off the top of my head). The Giants depth is in their great young starters. I doubt they'll trade their top two but Noah Lowry might be had and he'd fit in perfect in the third spot of our rotation. Lowry's best year was in 2005 when he went 13-13 with a 3.78 ERA over 202 innings with a +2 BB/SO ratio ( 76/172). In a four year career the 27 y/o lefty has compiled a record of 40-31 with an ERA 4.03 with a BB/SO ratio of 249/420. For some...

Rich Lowry: '08: THE FRATRICIDE REPUBLICANS
2007-10-14 20:20:00 New York Post article link '08: THE FRATRICIDE REPUBLICANS October 13, 2007 -- IS this it? That's the question that hangs over the Republican presidential field, and the answer is: Yes, this is it - no shining conservative on a white horse, no new Ronald Reagan, is arriving to re-make this race. Newt Gingrich is not getting in, and apparently had no serious intention of getting in. Fred Thompson is in and has proved to be another flawed candidate in a field full of them. Someone has to win this race, but it's easier to find reasons why each candidate will lose rather than prevail. I think that Newt has been playing all along not for a shot at the presidency but to be invited to fill a VP position or at least a possible Cabinet slot down the road for his endorsement now. Fred Thompson is a perfect example of how desperate Republicans are for a traditional Republican candidate. I think that many others, the same as myself, are sick to death of a president that ran as a conservative...

Braves Notes: Hampton, Lowry, Andruw
2007-10-09 04:35:00 Mike Hampton makes $15MM next year, and the Braves aren't getting any relief from the Rockies or Marlins. However, it turns out the Braves actually spread around those payments so that they'd pay out about $8MM to Hampton in each year of the deal. This is confirmed by Bill Shanks of Scout.com, for starters. Shanks notes that the Braves owe $8.25MM to Hampton next year because of amortization. I've heard that David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution said something similar in the comments of one of his blog posts, but it's been buried somewhere. Bottom line, the Braves have $7MM more than we thought they did. A $95MM payroll would give Atlanta some wiggle room to add a starter. It's not a stretch to add Tom Glavine, with this new information. However, O'Brien thinks the Braves need more. While Dan Haren or Joe Blanton may be out of reach, Noah Lowry seems a more realistic target. The point is to find a decent young contro...

Music DVD: Live At The Lowry by The Incredible String Band
2007-09-25 22:13:00 The Incredible String Band were an anathema when they started life in the 70’s and they are just as unfathomable today. Live At The Lowry was recorded in 2003, and is quintessential of their style. I guess most people would put them in the ‘Folk’ genre, and indeed they are, where they differ from the regular folk pigeon hole though is their musical style. I swear that they go out of their way to play in different keys! I know damn well that these guys are gifted musicians, it is almost that they are playing with the audience. Track one Everything’s Fine Right Now, and track two Ducks In A Pond, are classic examples of them not quite being in key. Yet they are close enough that you really are stuck describing the style, or the problem. I just know that I am being conned! And there is nothing wrong with that! You walk away from these songs knowing that something is wrong, but it is hard to figure out what. Mike Heron, Clive Palmer, Lawson Dando, and Fluff, are the backbone beh...

Rest Lowry and Lincecum
2007-09-07 01:51:00 The Giants have to keep Noah Lowry on the shelf for the rest of the year. It makes no sense at all to let him make another start with his elbow not at 100% and the Giants playing for nothing but pride. It's too bad for Lowry because he was on pace for a 17+ win season, but it's a lot more important to have him healthy for 2008 than stretch him out in a meaningless 2007 season. I also think they should do the same thing with Tim Lincecum as his velocity has plummeted in recent starts, an indicator that he's getting tired. During his latest start in Colorado, he was being clocked around 88-89 mph which is a huge drop off from the 97-98 he was throwing just a few weeks ago. A drop like that in velocity usually means injury or tired arm and in Lincecum's case it's a tired arm. Resting Lowry and Lincecum for the last 3 weeks of the year would also give the Giants an opportunity to asses some of the other younger pitchers in their system. They are going to have to fill at least one ...

Davis and Lowry Carrying Giants
2007-08-20 01:50:00 Ever since Rajai Davis dawned a Giants uniform for the first time, he has done nothing but impress. Right off the bat he showed how valuable he was on the base paths and in the outfield. It was no secret that he could fly and Giants fans realized within his first game that he was an exceptional defender with an above average arm. The only question about Davis' game was whether or not he had the bat to stick in an everyday lineup. He never really got much of a shot in Pittsburgh, but he's getting one here with the Giants, and he's taking full advantage of the opportunity. He hit his first major league career home run on Friday night to help the Giants passed the Braves, and he also has made some very good defensive plays. Since joining the Giants almost 3 weeks ago, Davis is hitting .364 (20-55) with 12 runs scored and 8 stolen bases. He's also getting on base with regularity (.462%), a key trait for a successful leadoff hitter. Most importantly however, is that the Giants are wi...
