2011 Lunar Eclipse: Moon Covered By Earth?s Shadow
2011-12-11 02:00:00
The 2011 Lunar Eclipse happened. A total lunar eclipse happens when the Moon passes through the long shadow cast by our Earth and is blocked by the Earth from the sunlight that normally illuminates its surface. The 2011 Lunar Eclipse happened today, Saturday morning, and was best seen overnight, as one could guess. This is (Read More...)

Could Our Lunar Eclipse Shed Light on Climate Change?

Lunar Eclipse Photos
2008-03-02 18:02:00
One great thing about living on a small island with little ambient light is that when something like an eclipse occurs you can really see it! I took these photos with my new Blackberry Curve 8320 and emailed them to my computer.First, the moon was full and bright enough to form shadows and require no flashlight for my walk home from the spa. This was taken at 9:02pm.By 9:30pm we could already see the eclipse beginning. At 10pm only a bit of the moon is still lit (but isn't it cool how it is so clear that you can still see the outline of the entire orb?).By 10:02pm, just before I went to bed, only the tiniest sliver of the light remains. Too cool!Tags: Photographs, Turks and Caicos, Parrot Cay, Caribbean, lunar eclipse 2008, lynda lippin
What is a Lunar Eclipse?
2008-02-22 20:30:00
Every night, we look at the moon high above our heads and see it shining down on us. It's not very often, however, that the moon makes the national news, causing millions of people to talk about it and all look skyward at the same time. But that is exactly what happened on Wednesday, February
Final Total Lunar Eclipse Until 2010
2008-02-21 23:38:00
As everyone knows by now, there was a total lunar eclipse on February 20, 2008. There won’t be another one until 2010. So, of course, this was something that we had to see for ourselves. According to the news, the eclipse was supposed to start sometime around 10:00pm AST here in Puerto Rico. And the universe ...
Lunar Eclipse: when?
2008-02-21 21:07:00
What?  The lunar eclipse was tonight.  I missed it.  I shoulda set my watch... Well - - maybe not about the time of lunar eclipse, but maybe this watch could help you locate when stars are going to be above the Northern Hemisphere. This ingenious watch can help amateur astronomers locate constellations in the Northern Hemisphere. Just align the date and time on the bezel for a chart of what stars are visible at that time of year. Features include a water- and scratch-resistant crystal dome lens, Japanese quartz movement, and a luminescent dial that glows for as long as three hours. 1 11/16'' diameter.Check it out at National Geographic!

Total Lunar Eclipse and Belgrade, Serbia Riots
2008-02-21 20:50:00
Did you see the total lunar eclipse last night? Here in Tiny Town, we had clear skies and were able to watch the whole display. Native Americans call this the Snow Moon, as the heaviest snowfalls usually occur in February. Instead of snow, we’re having an ice storm today. Pajamadeen, being a practical sort, secretly lusts after a generator. That way, she could skip the Waltonesque “back to the basics” phase which is likely to ensue — sitting on the sofa by candlelight, with no heat, devoid of her Internet lifeline and unable to watch DVDs. Poor, pitiful Pajamadeen — Don’t you feel sorry for her? Here’s what the lunar eclipse looked like in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Meanwhile, at least 200,000 protestors gathered in Belgrade, Serbia today to protest U.S. support of Kosovo’s newly-declared independence. Kosovo is considered by most Serbs to be their cultural and religious heartland. They’ve torched the U.S. embassy, which ...
snow and lunar eclipse in the same day
2008-02-21 14:19:00
Yesterday gave two very nice surprises.   First one was the clipper left us more than an inch of very fluffy snow acumulation.  It just kept snowing with nothing showing on radar anywhere near us.  My guess would have to be the precipitation was below the radar beam. Last night about 9pm we decided to run to ...
Total Lunar Eclipse Photos from Around the World - Total Lunar Eclipse 2008
2008-02-21 12:56:00
Last night we were provided a beautiful phenomenon, a total lunar eclipse, here in northern hemisphere. I was not able to see it here in Finland due to clouds, but many friends and HomeboyAstronomy readers have reported successful observations. As I was not able to see it, I have no images of the total lunar eclipse this year. Therefore I decided to provide links to observations around the world. Many people have written about the total lunar eclipse in their blogs and news sites. Tim from TimsAstroBlog wrote about his observation. Tim has a very nice series of photos of the total lunar eclipse. Check Tim’s blog and read how he managed to observe and shoot pictures of the total lunar eclipse. Aravind also reported successful observation of the total lunar eclipse. Aravind wrote how he managed to stay up and shoot few pictures of the lunar eclipse. Check Aravind’s blog to see his beautiful photos of the lunar eclipse. Vern has done a very nice video of the Eclipse. Check ...
Lunar Eclipse February 20, 2008
2008-02-21 06:57:00
Today’s eclipse is the last one until 2010. Unfortunately I missed the beginning, but as soon as I got home I set up my rig and began shooting. I captured the full eclipse and the beginning of the end, when the Moon started to show a thin crescent. Another unfortunate thing about this photo session was that the night was cloudy, which makes it hard to focus the camera. I have done the best I could under the circumstances. Equipment used: Meade ETX 125 AT telescope Canon EOS 20D digital SLR camera Canon A620 digital camera Canon 75-300 EF zoom lens with image stabilization Opteka 3x AF High Definition Telephoto Lens (converter) As you can see from the pictures of the rig, some pictures had been taken using Canon EOS 20D attached via t-ring to the accessory port of the telescope. Some pictures had been taken using the zoom lens with the 3x zoom converter lens attached. In the latter configuration auto-focus is impossible. I had to switch to manual focus. Focusing th...
Lunar Eclipse and Saturn

I finally had a chance to blow the dust off the telescope and grab some pics of the lunar eclipse and a bonus pic. Saturn is, I think about 800 million miles away from Earth tonight, extremely close and I managed to grab an extremely fuzzy pic using my Palm Treo through the telescope. If I would have thought I could have done better.

Click to Play My little video on the lunar eclipse that took place on February 20, 2008 between 9-10+ PM. It was a chilly night outside, so please don't mind my shaky hand. I don't really have much of a steady hand in the first place. Also, I say 'solar eclipse' at the start of the video. Don't kill me for that either. I'm very well aware that no sun is involved -- I'm just used to saying and thinking about solar eclipses more than lunar ones.Enjoy and have a good one.

Lunar Eclipse February 2008 Greece
2008-02-20 19:02:00
Almost after a year from the last lunar eclipse, the same phenomenon is repeated this night. The whole phonemomenon will take place at the night between Wednesday 20 and Thursday 21 February 2008, 03.43 to 07.09. The full lunar eclipse (red moon) will be take place from 5.01 to 5.51 am. The sky will be clear and the temperature ok. The earth will be between the moon and the sun. Earth's shadow will cover moon, but moon still takes somes light from the reflection of sun from the earth surface. The color is red thought because the reflected light (that goes from earth to moon) has been filtered by earth atmosphere and blue color is missing.

The Green Orb In The Lunar Eclipse
2008-01-09 15:36:00
The picture I posted of the alleged human alien hybrid got me thinking about some pictures I took this past summer. There was a lunar eclipse, and I wanted to get some pictures of it. My camera wasn’t great, and I was driving at the time that I took a couple of them. The first two pictures I was stopped for over near Rochelle, Il.  In both of those pictures there was some kind of green orb. Original Picture This one is the picture that it’s easiest to see it in. It’s to the lower left of the moon. The picture below isn’t actually enlarged, it’s just the moon and orb cropped out of that image full size. Close Up Anyhow, not sure what caused that, but I’m pretty sure it was the lighting. Either that or aliens impregnating some chick with the hybrid I posted yesterday. Lol.

Lunar Eclipse
2007-09-18 10:11:00
I know this is long overdue but there was a lunar eclipse recently in my university. It happened September 4th around 2am to 5am. I was so reluctant to sacrifise my sleep but I was thinking of my wonderful imaginary readers that I thought, "What the heck! What is a few hours of lost sleep compared to the joy of my imaginary readers right?"See how great I am?Well.. it was also more towards thinking that this would be my last time seeing a lunar eclipse if the thing about it appearing once in a 1000 years is true. The start of the adventureSlowly..Beautiful right?Uh-Oh.. the moon is disappearing!Oooh.. Note the color change?I love this!Sorry guys.. this is the end of it.I din stay up till 5 am so you will notice that the pictures only go one way. It climaxes but doesn't go down! Haha.. But its almost the same right? You just put the pictures the other way around. You know what I mean. The process was so slow it was torturing. The last time I saw an eclipse was like just 30 minutes. If y...

Lunar Eclipse Visible on U.S. West Coast
2007-08-29 04:32:00
(Photo series by Ver Penaranda: Stages of the Moon in Total Eclipse)LOS ANGELES: Early morning of August 28, 2007. As the moon moved through the shadow of the Earth, Skygazers across the nation were treated to the first lunar eclipse visible from North America in four years (since weather covered the last lunar eclipse of May 15-16, 2003)-- if they were lucky enough to have the weather cooperate. Initially, it was difficult to make out the darkened moon as it rose through haze hanging over Los Angeles. "It's over there -- it's the schmutz in the sky,'' said Kara Knack, 58, a member of Friends of the Observatory, a Griffith Observatory support group. The view was sharper through the more than dozen telescopes that amateur astronomers set up on the Griffith Park lawn. The moon remained totally eclipsed for 53 minutes as seen from North America. West Coast Photographer Ver Penaranda stayed up at the peak of the eclipse at around 3 a.m. Los Angeles time. A total lunar eclipse occurs...
Total Lunar Eclipse
2007-08-28 20:36:00
Last night the clouds cleared and we watched the total lunar eclipse develop and the moon turning red. As it developed the crescent moon was displayed as a hat rather than the more normal vertical alignment. The moon turned red around 8pm, at a time the kids could watch after we had celebrated Elizabeth's birthday with glow sticks and ice cream.Science geeks read on.It glows a warm red because of the dust particles from pollution, bushfires and volcanoes in the atmosphere, which filter out the blue light. The moon doesn't vanish as the sun does during a total solar eclipse, thanks to the geometry of Earth, the sun and the moon in relation to one another. A total lunar eclipse occurs when the moon moves into the shadow of Earth. The moon passes through Earth's main dark, circular shadow, the "umbra". It then moves through a lighter region of shadow, the "penumbra", surrounding the umbra.Unless the moon's edge is very close to the umbra, it's difficult to notice any changes...
