Lunar New Year Food (Vegetarian Style)
2008-02-11 00:59:00 This entry showcases some delicious vegetarian dishes I ate this past weekend. The main ingredients of the dishes are tofu, bean curd, and gluten. Some were purchased from a Buddhist temple that serves an amazing assortment of vegetarian cuisine. Some were prepared by my mom who is a big fan of Chinese vegetarian foods. There's also a couple of traditional Lunar New Year dishes like sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaves, sweet rice cake, and taro cake. My contribution was an extravagant Vegan Berry Mix Tofu Cheesecake (recipe coming soon!).Vegetarian Lunch boxThis lunch box consists of bean curd slices (on left), mock meat made from gluten (on right), some mushrooms and baby Bok Choy over rice.Vegetarian Roast PorkThis dish is made from gluten to mimic roast pork. A fruit extract was used to mimic the red color.Imitation Pork CutletThis dish is made with bean curd sheets. The sheets are layered together, breaded, and fried. Other than its extra long shape, it really looks like cutlet...

Lunar New Year 2008
2008-02-08 23:01:00 People around the world have been celebrating Lunar New Year, also known as Chinese New Year, and welcoming in the Year of the Rat.Many chose to start the celebrations with a visit to a Buddhist temple, like these people in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur.Despite the cold weather, thousands of people gathered at temples in Beijing to mark the most important annual festival in much of East Asia.In Indonesia, where the celebration was banned for years by recently deceased leader Suharto, ethnic Chinese people burned incense and offered prayers.Every year millions of people travel home to be with their families for the holiday. In parts of China, families make dumplings to symbolise luck and reunion. But not everyone can be with their loved ones, like this man in South Korea who offered prayers for his parents across the border in the North.New Year fairs spring up in Chinese cities, selling toys, gifts and red decorations said to bring good luck.Firecrackers, traditionally believed...

In Indonesia, Lunar New Year an old practice for young Christians
2008-02-08 01:53:00 Chinese-Indonesian Anatasha Eka will happily accept a red envelope stuffed with "good luck" cash from her grandmother and visit a temple for Lunar New Year -- despite being among a swelling number of young evangelical Christians here shrugging off Chinese tradition.Eka, an 18-year-old recent high school graduate, sits on a bench at the Jakarta Praise Community Church, or JPCC, where she converted to Christianity three years ago."My grandmother is still upset, so I didn't get baptised until a year ago. She is very concerned about Chinese culture dying out," said Eka, who has a non-practising Christian mother and strictly Buddhist father."I came to this church and just found I had a relationship with God. I'm not just praising him, He's also helping me."I talked to my father -- I said I want this, and this is the freedom that I have, to choose my religion."Today, fewer of the population felt 'Chinese' enough to identify themselves as such in a 2005 national population survey comp...
Shoutouts! & Happy Lunar New Year!
2008-02-07 17:49:00 The receptionist said "Happy Chinese New Year" to me this morning and I am so embarrassed I didn't even know it was Chinese New Year. My grandma on my dad's side is Chinese and growing up I don't remember ever celebrating it or even acknowledging it. Never received those pretty red envelopes embossed with gorgeous gold foil, nothing. I am really sad that I was never brought up "Asian" or at least

Happy Lunar New Year 2008
2008-01-25 08:51:00 T?T is celebrated on the same day as Chinese New Year. It is celebrated from the first day of the first month of the Chinese calendar (around late January or early February) until at least the third day. T?t shares many of the same customs of its Chinese counterpart. Many Vietnamese prepare for T?t by cooking special holiday foods and cleaning the house. On T?t, Vietnamese visit their families and temples, forgetting about the troubles of the past year and hoping for a better upcoming year. T?t traditionally marks the coming of Spring, so Spring (Xuân) is sometimes used interchangeably with T?t in Vietnamese.Vietnamese people usually return to their families during T?t. Some return to worship at the family altar or visit the graves of their ancestors. Others return to where they grew up. Although T?t is a universal holiday among all Vietnamese, each region and religion has its own customs.T?t can be divided into three periods, known as T?t Niên, Giao Th?a, and Tân Niên, representing...
