Genetic mutation and risk of lung cancer
2008-05-27 00:00:00
Carriers of a common genetic disorder previously associated with lung disease may have a 70-percent to 100-percent increased risk of lung cancer, as per a report in the May 26 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals. The disorder, alpha1-antitrypsin deficiency (1ATD), is one of the most common genetic conditions affecting the U.S. population and particularly those of European descent, as per background information in the article. Individuals with two copies of the associated genetic mutation often develop emphysema at an early age. However, 1ATD carriersthose with only one copy of the mutated genedo not normally have severe diseases correlation to 1ATD and may not be aware of their status. However, they may be more vulnerable to cancer-causing tobacco smoke than non-carriers........

LUNG CANCER
2008-04-30 09:36:00
Cancer of the lung is the most common cancer in men and increasing rapidly among women in the United States. There are a number of types of lung cancer, but the most common is called bronchogenic, since it originates in the bronchial tubes. By far, the most common cause of lung cancer is tobacco smoking with the risk directly proportionate to the number of cigarettes smoked and the amount of inhaling. It appears that in the tobacco tar, we find not only benz-0-pyrene, but also dozens of other cancerproducing chemicals, as well as other substances that sensitize the tissues to the destructive action of these agents. Over a period of years the hapless smoker accumulates an increasing amount of tar, until some of the lining cells, which at first increase in number as a protective measure, finally become transformed into malignant cells, which invade local tissues and eventually metastasize.Extensive research on tobacco was sponsored by The American Cancer Society. Also, momentous publi...
Exubera Causes Lung Cancer
2008-04-15 11:06:00
Exubera is a rapid-acting insulin indicated for the treatment of adults with diabetes mellitus for the control ofhyperglycemia. In patients with type 1 diabetes, EXUBERA should be used in regimens that include a longer-acting insulin. In patients with type 2 diabetes, EXUBERA can be used as monotherapy or in combination with oral agents or longer-acting insulins.EXUBERA is contraindicated in patients who smoke or who have discontinued smoking less than 6 months prior tostarting EXUBERA therapy. If a patient starts or resumes smoking, EXUBERA must be discontinued immediately due tothe increased risk of hypoglycemia and an alternative treatment must be utilized.EXUBERA is contraindicated in patients with unstable or poorly controlled lung disease, because of wide variations in lung function that could affect the absorption of EXUBERA and increase the risk of hypoglycemia or hyperglycemia. The use of EXUBERA in patients with underlying lung disease, such as asthma or COPD, is not recomm...

Mouth Test Could Predict Lung Cancer
2008-04-14 05:59:00
yahoo news: WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Damage to cells lining the mouth can predict similar damage in the lungs that eventually leads to lung cancer in smokers, U.S. researchers reported on Sunday. They hope it may be possible to some day swab the mouths of smokers to predict who is developing lung cancer — saving painful and dangerous biopsies of the lung. The process may also lead to tests that will predict other cancers, said Dr. Li Mao, an expert in head, neck and lung cancer at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. | read more | similar articles:RIP: Canadian Musician Jeff Healey Dies at 41Brutal Honesty: Teacher Gives Students a Verbal ThrashingComing Soon: Artificial Lungs
Lung Cancer Survival Rate
2008-04-07 15:59:00
Several factors influence lung cancer survival rates. The type of cancer, the stage it is at when diagnosed, and the overall condition of the patient all play a role in determining survival. Cancer survival is usually expressed in terms of a five-year survival rate, which is the percentage of patients with cancer who survive at least five years after their cancer is diagnosed.Studies have shown that five-year survival rates among non-small cell lung cancer patients vary by stage. Stage 0 patients have the best survival, of close to 50 percent at five years. Approximately one-quarter of stage II patients survive to five years, as compared to eight percent of stage III patients and only two percent of stage IV patients. In general, small cell lung cancer tends to proceed more rapidly to terminal disease. Ten to fifteen percent of patients with limited-stage small cell lung cancer, and between one and two percent of those with extensive-stage cancer, survive to five years.Estimates of ...
Genetic link for lung cancer identified
2008-04-03 16:27:00
Studies suggests that cancer risk is not just down to lifestyleThree independent genetic studies have found some of the strongest evidence yet that your genes influence your risk of developing lung cancer.Lung cancer, the most common killer cancer in the world, is largely caused by smoking. Tobacco is thought to be responsible for about 5 million premature deaths every year and smoking is still clearly the largest risk factor. But the new results suggest that, amongst smokers, some people may be as much as 80% more at risk than others thanks to their genes.People who have never smoked might also have a slightly increased risk of developing lung cancer and similar problems, although the three studies disagree on whether this is actually the case. It is not clear whether the genetic effect occurs independently of smoking, or whether the genes raise the risk of cancer by exacerbating nicotine addiction. The cancer regionBy scanning the entire genomes of lung-cancer patients and healthy ...
Researchers ID gene linked to lung cancer
2008-04-03 00:00:00
Scientists at Johns Hopkins, as part of a large, multi-institutional study, have found one gene variant that is associated with an increased risk of lung cancer. The study would be reported in the April 3 issue of Nature Genetics. The research team collected DNA from 1,154 smokers who have lung cancer and 1,137 smokers without lung cancer. Each DNA sample was analyzed at more than 300,000 points, looking for variationsknown as single nucleotide polymorphisms, or SNPs for shortbetween those with cancer and those without. They then analyzed the top 10 SNPs in an additional 5,075 DNA samples from smokers with and without lung cancer........

Lung Cancer - Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment and Care
2008-03-23 19:12:00
In the UK 38,000 people are diagnosed with lung cancer every year. There are two types of lung cancer; small cell which occurs in 20% of cases and non-small cell which occurs in 80% of cases. Small cell lung cancer is the most dangerous as it travels through to other parts of the body early on and can get into the bloodstream or lymph system quite quickly. Non small cell lung cancer travels more slowly and if caught early can be successfully cured.Smoking is the main cause of lung cancer although 10% of people with the disease have never smoked. The risk of lung cancer increases with the number of cigarettes smoked and the age of the smoker. If a person stops smoking the risks reduce quickly and after 15 years the chances of developing lung cancer are the same as a non-smoker. Breathing in other people's cigarette smoke, known as passive smoking, increases the chances of getting lung cancer but the risks are far less than if you smoke yourself. Those who smoke cigars, pipes or cann...

What Is Lung Cancer And Who Can Get It?
2008-03-18 10:56:00
Abnormal cell growth in either one or both of the lungs is the simple answer to the question, ?What is lung cancer?? In healthy individuals, the cells within the lungs go about their business duplicating at a normal rate and turning into more and more lung tissues. The lungs continue to function properly and all is well. But in damaged lungs, this rate of cell duplication becomes uncharacteristically fast yet new lung tissue fails to develop. These damaged (cancerous) cells begin to clump... [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more! ]]

Lung Cancer Symptom
2008-03-14 20:02:00
Most of the cases of this disease are asymptomatic the disease is revealed as a result of routine radiological examination of the chest, but some patient also show symptoms and signs. The main symptoms include cough, dyspnea, wheeze, stridor and sometimes pneumonia due to bronchial obstruction. If the tumour grows within the lung tissue it can cause pain. Sometimes patient can demonstrate symptoms of abscess formation due to tumour caviation. The spreading of tumour regionally can also result in dysphagia due to esophageal compression, hoarseness due to laryngeal nerve paralysis, dyspnea due to phrenic nerve paralysis and horner syndrome due to sympathetic nerve paralysis. Pancoasts syndrome is result of extension of tumour in the apex of the lungs which involves last cervical and first and second thoracic nerves compression of the nerves results in shoulder pain.Cancer can spread in practically all organs. This type of cancer can spread in brain causing some neurological problems, i...
Surgery for lung cancer better att teaching hospitals
2008-03-05 00:00:00
Patients cared for by hospitals with residents in training have a 17 percent less chance of dying after lung cancer surgery compared with patients undergoing surgery at non-teaching hospitals, as per results of a Johns Hopkins study reported in the recent issue of the Annals of Thoracic Surgery. Theres a public perception that teaching hospitals can be dangerous places because of training issues, and concerns are frequently voiced by patients and echoed in the press regarding a fear of physicians-in-training practicing on them, says the lead author of the paper, Robert Meguid, M.D., a surgical resident at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. The data from our study help refute these fears........

Improving the prognosis of lung cancer
2008-01-10 00:00:00
A group of researchers led by Professor Xavier Pars of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Universitat Autnoma de Barcelona, has published a research on AKR1B10, an enzyme that is detected in large quantities only in lung cancers, especially those caused by smoking. This enzyme can appear even when the cancer has still not developed and lesions are premalignant. Thus this molecule would serve as a good marker in the diagnosis and prognosis of the disease. Moreover, its activity could play a relevant role in the development of lung cancer, which makes the research of great interest for potential future therapeutical applications as well........

The Top Killer Cancer You Don't Know About: November Marks Lung Cancer Awar
2007-11-16 03:16:00
This year, as in the past, lung cancer will kill more Americans than any other cancer. In fact, lung cancer will claim more lives than the next four leading cancer killers -- breast, prostate, colon and pancreas cancers -- combined. The facts about lung cancer are startling, and few people realize the true scope of the disease. Gregory Kalemkerian, M.D., co-director of thoracic oncology at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center has provided the top nine facts to know about lung cancer:1. The death toll is high. About 213,000 people are diagnosed with lung cancer every year and more than 160,000 die from it.2. For smokers, the symptoms are familiar. Coughing, shortness of breath, weight loss, fatigue and coughing up blood are often the first symptoms of the early stages of the disease. "The biggest problem is that most people are diagnosed late, because early stage symptoms are common to smokers," said Kalemkerian.3. Late diagnoses make it deadly. "Surgery...

New insights into lung cancer
2007-11-05 00:00:00
An international consortium of researchers today in an advanced online publication in the journal Nature revealed a comprehensive view of the altered genetic background of the type of lung cancer that is the most common cause of cancer deaths in humans. Of particular interest was a specific proto-oncogene called NKX2-1 that appears involved in as a number of as 12 percent of lung adenocarcinomas the most common cause of cancer deaths worldwide, said the group, whose work was in part financed by the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI). The group noted, however, that analysis indicates that a number of of the genes that play a role in the disease remain to be discovered........

Immune Proteins Warn of Early Lung Cancer
2007-10-27 10:54:00
British researchers say they've spotted key immune system proteins that could give doctors early warning of lung cancer. A team at Nottingham City Hospital analyzed blood samples from 104 people with different types of lung cancer and 50 others who were cancer-free. The samples were tested for autoantibodies -- immune system proteins that are directed at the body's own tissues in response to specific chemical signals. The researchers focused their search on a panel of seven autoantibodies associated with solid tumors. The autoantibodies are triggered when cancerous changes are taking place. The team detected all seven autoantibodies, and very high levels of at least one of them, in almost 80 percent of the blood samples from the lung cancer patients. The autoantibodies were also found in eight out of the nine cancer patients whose cancer had not infiltrated the lymph nodes, indicating the cancer had not yet spread elsewhere, and the patients still had an 80 percent chance of be...
