lupus awareness month
2008-05-06 20:16:00 Did you know that May is Lupus Awareness Month? I didn't know until about five minutes ago. Now I'm really hoping that we get that Stimulus money deposited very soon because I would like to donate some money to help raise money online for lupus. I know we don't all have loads of money to throw around, but every little bit that you can part with helps. If just the small amount of readers I have here donated a little bit of money, we could help someone reach their goal. What do you say? Are you ready to give a little bit in order to help a lot? I am headed over there now to see how I can help.

2008-04-09 06:41:00 I work part time in a public library and recently a new book came across my desk that I was thrilled to see. It is a children's book on Lupus geared for ages 10 and up. The book is user friendly, easy to read, but far from simplistic and broken down into five chapters. The chapters are delve into 5 basic questions- What is Lupus?, What causes Lupus?, How is Lupus Treated?, How to Live with Lupus? and What is the Future for Lupus? There are also photographs, drawings and charts, which simplify this sometimes confusing and overwhelming subject. Click to read more ...

2008-03-24 05:06:00 I am proud of my wife, Christine. I am proud of the work she does for the Lupus Alliance, this website, and for our family. I am proud of her passion to help others, and the impact she has had on so many people through her speaking engagements, and of course, through ButYouDontLookSick.com. I had the pleasure of joining Christine and the Lupus Alliance on a recent trip to Washington DC, to promote Lupus awareness and lobby for the support of local congressional representatives. We decided to bring our seven month old daughter, Olivia, and my role was to care for her during the trip so that Christine could fully participate in the Advocacy Day activities. Super-Antioxidant: Vitamin E's Role In Lupus Treatment
2008-03-15 14:25:00 By: Mitamins Team Lupus disease, like any autoimmune disease, is an extremely difficult condition to treat. How can you fight against something causing you immense discomfort when that something is your own body? Because of this, lupus treatment is often restricted to controlling the signs and symptoms of lupus while the cause of the disease is found. In 90% of cases the cause is never found, meaning a long course of medication for many. This is why more and more people are turning to the natural choice of vitamins as lupus treatment. A leading light in natural lupustreatment is vitamin E.Lupus: The Enemy WithinWhat can vitamin E do to relieve the signs and symptoms of lupus? The answer to that question begins with looking more closely with what we are up against. The most dangerous and common type of lupus disease is Systemic lupus Erythematosus (SLE), which can affect and damage any of the body?s organs such as skin, liver, kidney, joints, blood vessels, brain, blood, and nervous ...

Genes linked with Lupus are revealed, giving hope for new treatments
2008-01-25 12:02:00 Scientists have identified a number of genes involved in Lupus, a devastating autoimmune disease that affects around 50,000 people in the UK, in new research published today in the journal Nature Genetics. In an international genetic study of more than 3,000 women, researchers found evidence of an association between Lupus (systemic lupus erythematosus or SLE) and mutations in several different genes. The findings, by scientists from Imperial College London and institutions in the USA and Sweden, will enable researchers to investigate the specific pathways and precise molecular mechanisms involved in developing Lupus, potentially opening up options for new therapies. Lupus is a complex condition, mostly affecting women, which frequently causes skin rash, joint pains and malaise, and which can also lead to inflammation of the kidneys and other internal organs. The scientists discovered the strongest associations with Lupus in three genes: ITGAM, PXK, and one mutation within a gene KI...

Researchers identify genetic risk factors linked to lupus
2008-01-21 10:43:00 A new study has identified multiple new genetic risk factors for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), commonly known as lupus, a debilitating autoimmune disease. The large-scale genomic study, conducted by an international consortium of clinical scientists and genomics experts, including researchers from the Montreal Heart Institute (MHI) and Universite de Montreal (UdeM), is the first of its kind to investigate the genetic basis of lupus. According to the researchers, lupus is caused by genetic variants that interact with one another and the environment. For the study, the researchers looked at the DNA of 720 women of European descent with lupus and 2,337 women without lupus. They scanned the entire genome for more than 317,000 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), which are locations on chromosomes where a single unit of DNA, or genetic material, may vary from one person to the next. The purpose of the study was to identify SNPs linked to lu...

Lupus and Crohn's Disease
2007-10-19 07:05:00 Lupus and Crohn's Don't Need to Ruin Your LifeBy Candida Bohnne-EittreimIt's been a long journey of discovery in how to live with both lupus and Crohn's Disease. Both of these are autoimmune disorders that wreak havoc with the body's connective tissues, and in some cases cause death. Because these are incurable and little understood disorders, it has taken major proactiveness on my part in learning how best to cope with the almost constant pain and fatigue they carry with them.I was first diagnosed with Crohn's Disease in the early '70's. I had been losing weight steadily, and was wracked with severe abdominal pains. My doctor had told me most likely I was suffering from "housewives" syndrome, which he blithely claimed was common among high strung women such as myself. That changed dramatically, when one night bent double with pain, I found I was hemorrhaging badly from my rectum. Admitted to the hospital from the emergency room, I was told I had cancer of the colon, and sch...

Michael Jackson Has Lupus
2007-10-10 19:11:00 Recent reports said Michael Jackson’s nanny has lupus. Now Fox News is reporting it is Jackson who has the illness. *Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE or lupus) is a chronic autoimmune disease that can be fatal, though with recent medical advances this is becoming increasingly rare. As with other autoimmune diseases, the immune system attacks the body?s cells and tissue, resulting in inflammation and tissue damage. SLE can affect any part of the body, but most often harms the heart, joints, skin, lungs, blood vessels, liver, kidneys and nervous system. The course of the disease is unpredictable, with periods of illness (called flares) alternating with remission. Lupus can occur at any age, and is most common in women, particularly of non-European descent.[1] Lupus is treatable symptomatically, mainly with corticosteroids and immunosuppressants, though there is currently no cure. However, many people with Lupus lead long and substantial lives. “ Picture Credit E...

The Biggest Event: Epilogue
2007-09-26 22:28:00 On August 30, 2006, months after the ceremony in Congressman Peter King's office honoring my father and his WWII service, my mother passed away after a long battle with cancer and Lupus. The sorrow my father experienced after losing his wife of fifty two years was enormous. To this day, he honors her by having masses said in her name at church and finishing all of the projects around the house which both he and my mother planned to do before she became sick. With his wife gone, and with his own lingering health issues, dad has moved on with his life with his children to watch over him. Back in June of 2007, my wife and I took dad with us to my sister's house as we were all invited to a family event. On the way home that Saturday night, it was dark, our children were dozing in the rear seats of our very large Trailblazer, and my wife sat in the back to accommodate my father as he needed the comfort of the front, bucket seat. As we drove home, dad talked about how both he and my mot...

Genetic Risk Factor For Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus, Identified By Study
2007-09-13 13:26:00 A genetic variation has been identified that increases the risk of two chronic, autoimmune inflammatory diseases: rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus). These research findings result from a long-time collaboration between the Intramural Research Program (IRP) of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) and other organizations. NIAMS is part of the National Institutes of Health. These results appear in the New England Journal of Medicine."Although both diseases are believed to have a strong genetic component, identifying the relevant genes has been extremely difficult," says study coauthor Elaine Remmers, Ph.D., of the Genetics and Genomics Branch of the Intramural Research Program at the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases. Dr. Remmers and her colleagues tested variants within 13 candidate genes located in a region of chromosome 2, which they had previously linked with RA, for ass... |
