Obama, Martin Luther King, and Jackie Robinson
2008-08-28 15:05:00 As much of the world -- or, at the least the free world -- knows, Barack Obama has now accepted the Democratic Nomination to officially run for president. It goes without saying that his nomination is nothing short of a watershed moment in American history, and could perhaps not only change the perception of race and race relations in the United States -- but also the nation's profile on the global front. This morning after scouring the New York Times, Washington Post, and CNN Online, I navigate to the Baltimore Sun and read a wonderful and insightful piece by columnist David Steele titled, "Robinson to King to Obama, A Combination For Progress", and found this to be real interesting:Today's date, Aug.28, links two epic moments in American history and in the progress of African-Americans in this country: The Rev.Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech during the March on Washington in 1963 and Barack Obama's speech accepting the Democratic nomination for president tonight. It's the Birthday of Luther Allison
2008-08-17 14:00:00 Luther Allison was born on this day in 1939 and he passed away on August 12 in 1997. He was an blues guitarist who was born in Widener, Arkansas and moved with his family, at age twelve, to Chicago, Illinois in 1951. He taught himself guitar while still a kid down in Arkansas where he first heard the blues. Many years later he began hanging outside blues clubs with the hopes of being invited to perform. He played with Howlin' Wolf's band and backed up James Cotton among others. He was also called to the stage to play with Muddy Waters.Remembering Luther AllisonLuther Allison - Evil Is Going On Amazon.com WidgetsI love the harmonica part on that last video, according to a comment left on YouTube for this video, Garfield Angrove is playing the harp on this track. And it really saddens me to have to write that Luther Allison died of inoperable lung cancer just a few days before his birthday back in 1997. As so often happens the good die young, and Mr. Allison was definitely one of th...

Sproul spends some time discussing Martin Luther, and highlights an instance when he was to offer his first Mass. ...

Martin Luther King Jr.'s last undelivered sermon: "Why America May Go to He
2008-04-09 21:15:00 On Thursday, April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. had retreated to room 306 of the Lorraine Motel, worrying about a sanitation strike in Memphis and working on his sermon for Sunday. Its title: "Why America May Go to Hell." For King, whose focus had shifted from civil rights to antiwar agitation and populist economics, the Dream was turning dark. He had been depressed, sleeping little and suffering from migraines. In Washington, his plans for a massive Poor People's Campaign were in disarray. In Memphis, King's first march with striking garbage men had degenerated into riot when young black radicals--not, as in the glory days, angry state troopers--broke King's nonviolent ranks. By 5 p.m. he was hungry and looked forward to a soul-food supper. Always fastidious-a prince of the church--King shaved, splashed on cologne and stepped onto the balcony. He paused; a .30-06 rifle shot slammed King back against the wall, his arms stretched out to his sides as if he were bein...

Christopher Hitchens: Barack Obama is no Martin Luther King
2008-04-08 23:46:00 The so-called black leaders who Barack Obama used to acquire his black political identity, and from whom he does not distance, are certainly no disciples of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  They are races hustlers.   Christopher Hitchens, makes a bold assertion, “Today, the national civil rights pulpit is largely occupied by second-rate shakedown artists:”   Further, Hitchens makes it stick.  BO may claim to transcend race, but his friends certainly do not. Technorati Tags: Obama

Dr. Martin Luther King assasinated 40 years ago.
2008-04-07 00:00:00 A few days ago (April 4th) marked the 40th anniversary of the death of the great civil rights crusader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., one of the greatest Americans of all time, up there with Washington and Lincoln and FDR, for sure. He would have been 79 this year, and the world continues to mourn this giant. How sad it is, indeed, that he's not still with us. The last speech he gave, in Memphis, TN, on the night before his murder was entitled, "I've Been to the Mountaintop." According to Andrew Young, former mayor of Atlanta and aid to King at that time, Dr. King had given this speech a few times before, always in the most tense and dangerous moments of the non-violent civil rights movement. At the time in early April, 1968, there were ominous signs that King's life was in danger. In fact, the FBI had been secretly taping him and following him for some time, and his aids were worried. He had just come back to march the next day in support of the Memphis garbage workers who were ...

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Showed The Way
2008-04-05 01:58:00 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated on April 4, 1968 - the day America will always mourn - one of its most courageous and upright citizens was killed by a sniper’s bullet. Since the horrible slaying of Dr. King, this nation has certainly progressed in racial relations, which shows what a positive and noble aim can accomplish. America is a better country from the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and others like him. This United States of America has always been a country known for great its commitments, innovations and accomplishments - and equalizing the rights of all of its populace was one of its most ground-breaking actions. Its corrected civil rights policies have gone a long ways to improving this nation and making it a true “melting potâ€. And individuals like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. are the founding fathers of these civil right statutes. Our many races are now living far more harmoniously then before changes to the civil rights laws. Great nations do grea...
John McCain Has Some Nerve To Speak About Martin Luther King Jr Today

A mistake I myself made long ago...when I voted against a federal holiday in member of Dr. King. I was wrong. I was wrong. I was wrong. He said he turned around in time to recognize the holiday in his home state of Arizona. There were boos. But this was a prepared speech. He was ready for this, and it was airing on live TV. A voice shouted above all the others, Everybody makes mistakes, everybody makes mistakes.

A memory from the day Martin Luther King, Jr. died
2008-04-04 20:29:00 When I first heard, I was jubilant. For a 10-year-old white kid living in a South we all thought was under siege, hearing that Martin Luther King was dead was like hearing that Satan had converted and joined the Southern Methodist Church. The ogre was dead. We were safe. Very quickly, we learned that we needed to fear again. My county was about 50% black, and seemingly all of them were set to converge on the courthouse square of my little town. They were then set to march down the main street and US highway that ran right past my house. My father was away from the area, working, so my mother told me to get all the guns in the house, load them, and be prepared to protect her and my sister if they stormed the house. I sat by the front door when they marched by. I sat there, trembling, surrounded by my single-shot .22 rifle with the sawed-off stock to fit my skinny shoulder, the lever-action .30-.30 carbine, and the .38 police special revolver. The safeties were off. I didnR...

Martin Luther King’s dream lays shattered in the dust
2008-04-04 18:26:00 Preface, I neither deify nor demonize Martin Luther King, Jr.   King was certainly a very important figure in our nation’s history, but no where near important as liberal myth demands   King was not the single most important person in our history as suggested by being the only person to have a national holiday solely in his honor.  Nor is King the most important black figure in our history.  King’s contributions are paled by those of Fredrick Douglas.   It is beyond my scope, and ability, to articulte a nuanced and balanced picture of King. Today, marks the fortieth anniversary of King’s murder at the hand of James Earl Ray.  In response the media publishes scores of postumous puff pieces. What King did do, better than any other American back, was to articulate a vision, U.S Constituion Online. I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the conte...

The Anniversary Of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Death
2008-04-04 02:36:00 Tomorrow will mark the 40th Anniversary of the death of Martin Luther King, Jr. A man who has an equivocal impact on the civil rights movement and nonviolent demonstrations for peace, King was a revered and respected speaker and public figure whose activism was only fully recognized and awarded by the powers that be after his death. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom nearly a decade after his assassination, and his Congressional Gold Medal also was given after he'd died.
Today is 40 Year Anniversary of the Assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr
2008-04-03 21:32:00 There is a reason this man is featured upon my Favorite People Page. He accomplished a truly extraordinary feat for an entire race of individuals using non-violent methods as his tools. Many feel that Barack Obama is like Martin Luther King, Jr. I am not one of these people, as I do not believe Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. would not want to be closely associated with people who try to "unite human beings" by spewing racial bile like Reverend Louis Farrakhan and Reverend Jeremiah Wright, Jr. constantly do. Here is Dr. King's "I Have a Dream Speech" Too bad he's not here to be running for his second term as our United States President. When it comes to race relations, we need a man who does what Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. did, which is to unite human beings using words of love and not of hate. My heart goes out to Dr. King's family and friends who are missing this great man on this tragic anniversary. READ ABOUT THIS HEREPractice non-violence in your lives. You will ...

Of Leo, Luther, & Benedict
2008-03-07 02:48:00 It seems that Pope Benedict may be reconsidering Pope Leo's condemnation of Martin Luther as a heretic. If so, it is quite a step forward from Cardinal Ratzinger's 1998 reaction to the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification ... but I will believe it when it moves beyond media speculation and the words actually come with a Vatican seal attached.
