Luxembourg drivers: are they truly polite?
2008-03-21 20:57:00 From the Wort: "Luxemburger sind höfliche Autofahrer". I agree that it's not easy to find an agressive driver in Luxembourg. But "polite", "courteous"? "Höflich" can also be translated has "unrude", which is more appropriate in this case. A tree is unrude. A stone wall is unrude. Luxembourgish drivers (or Luxembourg drivers) are not rude, they drive peacefully and respect traffic rules (when they're aware of them...). But this is not being polite: being polite is to adequate your speed near a junction to let someone turn left in front of you, even if you have the right of way. Being polite is to aknowledge the existence of other drivers and don't wait half a minute before moving so that you don't limit the number of cars that make it through before the light turns red again.Robert A. Heinlein once said that politeness is a sine qua non of civilization. I totally agree with him.Blogging in Luxembourg. In engrish.

City of Luxembourg: Plan d'aménagement général (PAG)
2008-03-12 13:45:00 Some personal (and humble) considerations about the PAG presented the 29th of February (you can find it here):- it's very positive to finally acknowledge that the saturation of the Hamilius-Gare axis is one of the major problems concerning public transportation in the city; the solution is, of course, to create other bus-train(-tram?) interfaces, namely in Kircheberg, Gasperich and Howald (East, South and West; the Northern entrance to the city poses a different problem, as the highway is still under construction);- it's good to know that, in a country where one of the most relevant yearly "cultural" activities is the Auto-Festival, someone is planning to reduce accessibilities for cars and promote public and soft transportation (at least it shows some nerve);- sadly, there are no plans for closing the highway ring around the city: if you're in Strassen and want to go to the airport, it's faster to drive through town, and this is not a good sign;- a second inner ring (with a spe...

MUPI in Luxembourg (like in "Martine in Luxembourg" or "Noddy in Luxembourg
2008-03-08 15:55:00 We already knew that Santa was living in Luxembourg. After the most recent anti-MUPI fairy tale reactions (small print: "although our main business is banking, we don't want your filthy capitalist advertising in our city"), I've just been informed that Snow White is also moving into town, and she's bringing the Dwarfs with her (not all of them, Grumpy is staying in Liechtenstein; and, by the way, Bambi is still happily living in Switzerland, where he relocated to after the fall of the Weimar Republic).(previous posts about the free bicycle system and the contract with JC Decaux here and here)Blogging in Luxembourg. From Liechtenstein to Luxembourg
2008-03-05 12:36:00 After the recent tax evasion scandal concerning Liechtenstein, German Finance Minister Peer Steinbrueck said that other loopholes should be addressed. Luxembourg, Belgium and Austria included."Asked whether Luxembourg was considered a tax-friendly state, Steinbrueck replied: "Not in the sense of a tax haven, but you know that it is hard to get certain information from Luxembourg. That also applies to Austria."In the second half of 2005 when the new rules came into force, Liechtenstein collected 2.55 million euros ($3.87 million) of tax on investments that come under the scope of the EU rules. This rose to 14.8 million euros for all of 2006, compared with Switzerland's collection of 101.62 million euros in first half 2005 and 341.24 million euros in 2006." More problems with the bicycle contract in Luxembourg City
2008-02-26 15:20:00 The free bicycle system - and the contract with JC Decaux - is still fuelling the political debate in Luxembourg City. Some of the MUPIs (Mobilier Urban pour l'information) were removed, and it seems that others will follow, because their location was said to be dangerous for traffic visibility. A written approval from the Ministry of Culture is also missing, according to the opposition. "This fairy tale comes from people who have no clue about public tenders", says the City Council. The result of all this is obvious: the City will have to loose a lot of money to honor the contract with JC Decaux, and the opposition will have a very good argument for the coming election, although they don't seem to have any solutions or a positive attitude towards pollution or traffic increase (the bicycles are not to supposed to solve any traffic or pollution problems, they're just a very good way to start changing, to say "we care, we are aware of the problem, we are doing something"). This Frid...

Metro subway in Luxembourg
2008-02-19 13:26:00 The ADR (Alternative Democratic Reform Party*) thinks that the best solution for the future of public transportation in Luxembourg would be a metro, not the tramway. The building of a subway tunnel in only three years in Leipzig is cited has an example. Leipzig has 500 000 habitants, five times more than Luxembourg (surrounding comunes included). The city tunnel was built to complete the suburban train system, and it's not a metropolitan subway. A similar project in Luxembourg would mean extending the train lines from the Gare up to Kirchberg, with an additional central station in the Centre-Ville. By the way, Leipzig's suburban tunnel is a seven years project, with the following anounced benefits: "More than 320,000 car km per day will be avoided. This will considerably increase the City?s share in short-distance public transport. Shorter travelling time between medium level centres and the city centre of Leipzig. Better connection and development of the airport, New Fair Ground,...

JCDecaux in Luxembourg and the bicycle contract
2008-02-13 23:00:00 The bicycle agreement with JCDecaux has started a political discussion in Luxembourg City. The ten-year contract for the self-service bicycles signed by the City government is being questioned by the biggest opposition party (CSV). In exchange for the 250 self-service bicycles and 25 docking stations, the French company sold the city 80 new advertising panels (or MUPI, Mobilier Urbain Pour l?Information). A previous contract had already granted JC Decaux the instalation of 200 bus shelters. This deal is said to be economically disadvantageous for the City, and the number of MUPI too high and visually polluting, even dangerous for traffic visibility in some places. Cabbage smell in Luxembourg
2008-01-31 23:33:00 Have you notice the rotten cabbage smell in Luxembourg last sunday? It's the Burgos paper mill near Arlon."Most odors associated with kraft paper mills result from the use of sulfur in digesting wood and sawdust. In the digestion process some of the sulfur is converted to reduced sulfide compounds (TRS). TRS gases, which have very distinctive odors, are primarily hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S, rotten egg smell), methyl mercaptan (CH 3 SH, rotten cabbage smell), dimethyl sulfide (CH 3 SCH 3 , rotten vegetable smell), and dimethyl disulfide (CH 3 S 2 CH 3, rotten vegetable smell)." It's official: Santa Claus («Kleeschen») is moving to Luxembourg!
2007-12-04 16:55:00 «At a meeting of EU finance ministers in the small but prosperous duchy, Luxembourg refused to agree to a lifting of the tax advantages that have prompted iTunes, Skype, eBay, Santa Claus and other big Internet companies to set up shop there. That effectively blocked the package, because adoption of tax measures requires unanimous agreement by all 27 EU members.Telecommunications companies, satellite broadcasters and other companies providing online services apply a value added, or sales, tax based on where the company is established, not where the customer is. That makes Luxembourg, where VAT on Internet-related sales is 15 percent, an attractive place to operate. In neighboring Germany, for example, the rate was raised to 19 percent this year.»Blogging in Luxembourg. In engrish.

Luxembourg hotels, inns, restaurants and guest houses
2007-11-24 21:01:00 A guide to hotels, inns, restaurants and guest houses is available from the tourist office. Some hotels have special weekend rates from $200 a person, which usually includes all meals from dinner on Friday thru lunch on Sunday. Other hotels start at Eur70 to Eur80 a day, based on double occupancy. Findel Airport is four miles from Luxembourg City and taxi fare is about 20 Euros. Buses also run from the airport into town and cost about Eur4. Luxembourg is a major European train center. The Oeko-Pass system offers travel on railways and public buses and costs $1 for local travel. This is the short-distance ticket (about one hour in any direction). A one-day pass is available for a few euros and discounts are available on books of tickets. The national railway is part of the Benelux Tourrail Pass network. The Luxembourg Card offers free access to more than 30 cultural attractions and is available for one, two or three days.
Natur Musee - Luxembourg
2007-11-23 21:00:00 Natur Musee in Grund houses natural history collections kept in a former prison for women. In Clervaux, Diekirch, Ettelbruck and Wiltz are Battle of the Bulge museums. Exhibits and descriptions cover the crucial World War II battle, much of which was fought across Luxembourg. There is a major American cemetery at Hamm where General George Patton is buried, along with thousands of other American soldiers. Nearby is a German cemetery, worthy of a comparison peek. The differences between the two cemeteries is marked. The Grand-Ducal Golf Club is about 4 miles from the center of Luxembourg City. This 18-hole golf course offers golfing in a most elegant and beautiful setting. Across from the golf course, a Sheraton resort is set in a 10-acre park, worthy of a visit. You can carry a picnic lunch and relax in this beautiful setting.
The annual Dancing Procession - Luxembourg
2007-11-22 20:59:00 The annual Dancing Procession in Echternach honors St. Willibrord, who brought Christianity to the region during the 7th century. Each Whituesday, the bishop of Luxembourg leads hundreds of citizens and pilgrims, dancing slowly to a medieval tune, from the banks of the Sére to the basilica housing Willibrord’s remains. The 1998 procession also marked Echternach’s 1500th anniversary. Excursions from the capital are available to the Ardennes; through the scenic Valley of the Seven Castles and to the Moselle wine region. Vianden dates to the 9th century. Its castle was the cradle of the Orange-Nassau dynasties. Also worthy of a look is the restored Gothic Trinitarian Church and cloister which dates back to 1248. The house where Victor Hugo stayed during part of his exile from France is now a museum. Close to the French border, Mondorf-les-Bains offers a thermal spa, fitness and sports center and a casino. Clervaux Castle, in the heart of the Ardennes, is the permane...
Luxembourg - A Treasure Chest of Attractions
2007-11-20 20:57:00 A nice characteristic of Luxembourg is its small size with an amazing variety of offerings for the tourist. The country is about the size of Rhode Island, incorporating 999 square miles. English is widely spoken and getting around is easy. Roads are excellent but local transportation is efficient and inexpensive. Luxembourg was founded in 963 when Count Sigefroid built his castle. Over the centuries, a formidable fortress grew in what is now Luxembourg City. The remaining tunnels and walls hint at a turbulent history in the Grand Duchy. This city is now a modern cosmopolitan center boasting art galleries, excellent museums, theaters, concert halls, boutiques, shopping malls and an admirable variety of restaurants. Commercially, the city is headquarters for the European Union Court of Justice, the Investment Bank, the General Secretariat of the European Parliament and the Court of Auditors. A walking tour, "1,000 Years in 100 minutes," begins at recent 10th-century excavati...

The Wines of Luxembourg: light, dry and delicious to drink
2007-07-14 16:48:00 The latest wines to come to my notice are from Luxembourg. The other night I had a deliciously dry and refreshing Riesling followed by an Auxerrois, one of Luxembourg?s most successful grape varieties. The Grand Duchy grows Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Auxerrois, Riesling, Gewürztraminer and Pinot Noir, all of which are produced as varietal wines. Well chilled and refreshing, the wines were perfect with paté on toast triangles, cubed pineapple, cheese and cherries on toothpicks, and cucumber sticks, not to mention some moist dhokla! Not one person asked for a beer, a nimbu pani or a diet coke. That says something? about the wines and our changing beverage preferences. Pictured above is Moselle Vineyards in Luxembourg.
Luxembourg Gardens
2007-06-14 01:14:00 With an abundance of 3, 4 and 5-star hotels in the St. Germain neighborhood of Paris, there is room for most any budget, from cheap to luxurious. And anyone staying in this convenient central Paris location should make time to stroll through the Luxembourg Gardens. Built from 1615 to 1627 for Henry IV?s second wife, Marie de Médicis, today it is one of the most popular fair-weather hangouts for Parisians. With 25 hectares to roam (making it the largest park in the city), you can find a spot for a picnic even on a crowded day. This is prime central Paris people-watching territory: gentlemen of all ages playing chess; impeccably groomed ladies sitting in circles, each with her handbags close by, obviously enjoying the visiting, gossiping and time together; some children having a great time running around and laughing; other children out maneuvering their bateaus in the pond; and lovers out strolling arm in arm or lounging on the lawns. There are statues and fountains all around the pa...
Unabashed Paris Endorsement: The Luxembourg Gardens
2007-05-31 15:26:00 Photo by Toni_Blay A trip to Paris without at least one walk through the Luxembourg gardens is like eating a French meal without accompanying it with a glass of wine. While the gardens lie directly on Paris’s beaten path they still, somehow, reveal an authentic view of Parisian life. Despite the number of tourists here, parents still bring their children to play about the jungle gyms, smoking businessmen continue to people watch on park chairs, and elderly men incessantly argue points while playing the French bowling game pétanque. Simply put, there are few parks in the world as integrated into the fabric of a city as the Luxembourg gardens are in Paris. Recommending the Luxembourg gardens to travelers will never be breaking news but visitors shouldn’t miss a place where a young Hemingway found distraction from hunger pangs, lovers flock to propose marriage, and children ride ponies and captain sail boats in the shadows of a 17th century palace. Yes, Cheapos, the park is fr...

A Day in Luxembourg
2007-05-28 12:53:00 The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is a small but perfectly formed treasure. Leaving Luxembourg
2007-05-26 21:32:00 Deborah in the Finals The final day of the competition is past. I did not make it to the finals, but my friend Roberto was awarded Third Prize. Congratulations! There was no First Prize unfortunately. The jury seemed not to know exactly what they wanted, since so many experienced conductors were voted out in the previous rounds. I am convinced there were conductors professional and worthy enough for the First Prize! But this is how it went this time... How Ivan felt after the semi-final results... The Orchestra Philharmonique de Luxembourg did a heroic job playing many big works in the finals without rehearsal. There was Firebird, Brahms 1st and 2nd symphonies, Brahms Haydn variations and last but not least Rahmaninov 2nd and 3rd symphonies! I want to congratulate and thank the orchestra and its wonderful players. Hope to see you in the future! The Valley (photo by Ivan) Now all that is left is to pack and leave Luxembourg behind! Scotland via Luxembourg, Amsterdam and Dublin
2006-09-07 07:03:01 August 15, 2006We said goodbye to Anna, Isaac, and John at the Luxembourg airport. Anna and I held each other for a long time. It could easily be another two years before we see each other again. Although airline madness continues we were able to board with carry on luggage surely because we were travelling from one European Union country to another. After a one hour flight we had a 3.5 hour layover in Amsterdam. We passed it pleasantly in the large airport. During this time I discovered that the man with the scary eyes and wiry hair stamped on KLM cream and sugar is Rembrandt and that Heineken is Holland?s Budweiser (remembering some Americans? snobbery around the brand). It was interesting to look up and see the flight boards announcing flights to every major city in the world. If I didn?t feel like a world citizen at this point, I never would. I did.We arrived in Dublin in the early evening. Tom and Sara picked us up. Bless their hearts. We had somehow overlooked that ou...
Bitburg via Dublin, Amsterdam and Luxembourg
2006-09-07 07:03:01 August 11,2006After a pleasant chat over breakfast Sarah and Tom took us the airport again for our journey to Germany. We discovered our bags were 3 pounds overweight but with a wink and a nod we were told we were okay. That?s friendly, laid back Ireland.Paul and I slept through this one-hour hop to Amsterdam. It seemed the entire journey would go well. When we landed we had barely one hour to find our gate for Luxembourg. On the outset it seemed like plenty of time but the more we walked through the labyrinth we realized we would be lucky to make it in time. We were following the signs and we were not lost but we made left turns, right turns, went upstairs, then downstairs, then upstairs, then down stairs, right, left. We made it about 5 minutes before the bus left to take us out to the plane (another surprise). As we got off the bus to board in the middle of a field I noticed Fokker 50 written on the wing which certainly reminded me of a very funny American movie called ?Mee...
