Maxtor OneTouch 4 Plus (750GB)
2008-01-29 08:04:00 There may be no end to the number of digital photos you can snap, but eventually your photo collection will overtake the oh-so finite amount of hard drive space you currently have. Fortunately, the options for large external storage upgrades are plentiful. One candidate worthy of consideration is the Maxtor OneTouch 4 Plus (750GB). Although blemished by uneven performance and software incompatibilities, the drive nonetheless provides an attractive solution for your storage needs. This black ziggurat-shaped drive is tapered toward the top, with scooped-in aluminum sides that serve as heat sinks for the hard drive mechanism within?the indentations on the sides also make for an easy grip when moving the unit. All connections?two FireWire 400 ports, a mini-USB connector, and the power jack?are positioned at the widest part of the case, at the bottom. The drive features a programmable push button on the front that can be used to trigger an immediate backup using the included Maxtor Manage...

Time Capsule ->the new Apple Tv
2008-01-16 19:51:00 The MacBook Air was undoubtedly the highlight of Apple's Macworld conference this morning, but it wasn't the only item on the menu. Indeed, Apple had several other major announcements: a new wireless backup device called Time Capsule, a revamped Apple TV, the addition of movie rentals to the iTunes Store, and updates for both the iPhone and iPod touch.Let's start with Time Capsule. Due next month, the device is built to complement the Time Machine automated backup and recovery software in Apple's latest Mac OS X 10.5 operating system. On the hardware front, it's basically a Wi-Fi router with a built-in hard drive. Pricing starts at $299 a 500GB model, and users can opt for a $499 version with a 1TB hard drive. The Time Capsule otherwise features 802.11n Wi-Fi support, three Ethernet ports, one WAN port to plug in a cable or DSL modem, and a USB port for a printer. Although it's meant to be a wireless backup companion to Time Machine, Apple says the device also works as a wirel...

Using Maven to create a Mac OS X app bundle
2007-11-05 21:57:00 I came across this post and this Maven plugin today. Call me cynical, but I was shocked when it worked out of the box, building our application as a Mac friendly .app which can be run with a double click. To test it out, all I did was change into our application’s trunk directory and ran: mvn package osxappbundle:bundle -DmainClass=com.mypkg.MyMain And it worked! So I extended integrated it into our pom.xml with the following. Now whenever our app is packaged on a Mac, in addition to the other artifacts, an .app, .dmg, and .zip of the My App tool will be created. <profiles> .... <profile> <id>package-osx-bundle<-;/id> <activation> <os> <family>mac</family>-; </os> </activation> <build> <plugins> <plugin> <groupId>org.cod...

Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard “Real World Usage” Report: Stacks
2007-11-04 00:49:00 There is a new feature in the new Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard operating system called Stacks. Pretty simple idea. The Mac (for those of you who don’t own one) has something called the “dock”. It’s the same thing as the “task bar” in Windows. The big difference is you can drop your application icons on it and launch your application from there. That’s all great, however, after a while, your Dock becomes very crowded. So in Leopard, there is this new feature called “stacks” which allows you to “group” applications together and have them “pop up” in a kind of “Leaning Tower of Piza” kind of way. It’s pretty neat (very Mac like). However, there are many ways that Apple can (and in my opinion, should) improve on this functionality since Windows already has most of what I’m about suggest inside their “start” menu. I can’t create a “stack” in the dock and then just drop any application I want in there. For example, I would like to have a “Video Editing” stack and drop Final Cut Pro, Compresso...

2007-11-03 06:15:00 I'm so happy MacInTouch put up this list, because I'm still waiting for my up-to-date copy of Leopard to arrive, and I may hold off loading it up since some of my favorite apps have issues, including .Mac, Photoshop Elements for Mac and more.

Did Mac OS X Leopard Replace 3rd Party Applications?
2007-11-01 22:42:00 I wrote about some of my favorite "small" 3rd party applications for Mac, so-called because they do small- to medium-sized functions for your Apple. Aside from compatibility issues with a new OS (for instance, Cocktail 4.0 will come out soon, and you'll be able to use it with Leopard), could some of the newest Leopard features replace our favorite "small" apps?I came across an article at Macworld that asks just that question. Dan Frakes of Mac Gems, my favorite place to find "small" apps, goes through a list of popular software and sees if new features in Leopard will replace them. Companies like Panic had very popular software apps like Adion (a Mac-based MP3 player, very much like iTunes, but it came out well before the classic app was developed), and when Apple started adding similar apps, it really hurt those 3rd party developers. What will happen now?Check out Macworld's article (part 1) here.

2007-10-31 20:41:00 “Apple has changed its license for Mac OS X Server 10.5 (Leopard Server) to allow virtualized instances. VMware and Parallels are poised to offer support.

Mac OS X Leopard: My Night At An Apple Store
2007-10-29 19:40:00 When I heard Apple's latest operating system, OS X 10.5 Leopard, the nerd in me HAD to be at the Apple Store closest to me to get a copy. Some people love to be at a major sports game, others like to be at a pub watching American Idol (or not), others, like me, want to be at an Apple Store, or a Mac sales hut, to get a copy of the latest OS X! (Or an iPhone.)I don't think any other computer manufacturer has the type of rabid devotion Apple does, though some try, most notably the Xbox 360. I don't think any Microsoft fans waited outside, screaming, for Vista, but they sure did wait to get the fantastic Halo 3.Anyway, back to my love affair with Mac OS X. In March 2001, my best friend and I made the trek to the semi-nearby CompUSA to buy a copy of OS X 10.0. It was fun to back up and install (okay, not the backing up part) the first OS X, but it didn't really work well on my old PowerBook. I couldn't edit on Final Cut Pro, I couldn't watch DVD...

Reality Hits; Issues with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard After My Upgrade
2007-10-29 02:18:00 If you are wanting to hear all the nice things about Mac OS X 10.5 and how easy it is to install, just read my previous blog, “My Experience Upgrading From Mac OS X Tiger to Mac OS X Leopard“. In this blog entry, I’m only concentrating on issues I had, I’m having and will have as I start using my new Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard machine. So don’t expect “Ohhh…..everything is great…..I love Apple…Apple does everything perfect”. They don’t make everything perfect (though, it is better then Windows….and I work on both Mac and Windows). So here we go. Read below for the reality you may run into when upgrading your machine to the new Mac OS X 10.5. If you had other issues that have not been documented here, please feel free to contact me and tell me what they are. I will add them to this blog entry as the issues grow (hopefully, not too many). My Experience Upgrading From Mac OS X Tiger to Mac OS X Leopard
2007-10-29 02:17:00 So I took the plunge. I was going to wait to hear what other people’s experience was like upgrading to Mac OS X Leopard, but after visiting the Apple Store in Pasadena, I could not wait. I purchased Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) for $129. In fact, I purchased 2 copies. One for me and one for my work computer. The upgrade was extremely easy. I turned on my Mac, inserted my DVD and after the screen poped up a big “X”, I clicked the Restart button. The computer rebooted, I selected the destination of my upgrade (my default Macintosh HD) and then clicked “Install”. I then walked away and went to my room to watch a movie with my wife (we watched Chasing Amy, by Kevin Smith, I highly recommend this movie, extremely funny…but that’s for a different blog). I kept coming back every 10 to 15 minutes to check how the upgrade was going. It said it would take about 45 minutes. It took about that long (actually a bit less time) and it required around 5.5GB of free space for the upgrade. After the upgra...
