Off-Topic :: RE: Linux + Windows + Mac Os X on one box!?!?!
2007-08-17 01:37:00 Author: patrick Posted: Thu Aug 16, 2007 7:37 pm (GMT -4) Well, I got 3 OS's going. Win XP Pro SP2 Win Vista Ultimate 64-bit Ubuntu Linux CE Feisty Fawn I also have a partition reserved for mac and hopefully it will be as easy as using acronist or something similar to copy a HD image on there and just edit my boot info to add that partition as an option. I don't kow why, bt I felt like trying vista out. It basically reminded me of why I left the microsoft world a while ago. It's full of all kinds of unnecessary eye-candy, excessive un-needed "security" features, and lacks big time in compatibility. It's a stubborn, over-bloated pile of code that does not like to play nice with any of the other OS's. It wouldn't let me overwrite the boot sector with my grub info. I ended up having to insert the XP boot info into the MBR just so that I could overwrite it with grub. Also, Vista has some very common stuff "hidden" like enabling/disabling certa...

2007-08-15 22:21:00 Author: Daniel Posted: Wed Aug 15, 2007 4:21 pm (GMT -4) Awesome. Let me know how it goes _________________"Freedom is not defined by safety. Freedom is defined by the ability of citizens to live without government interference. Government cannot create a world without risks, nor would we really wish to live in such a fictional place. Only a totalitarian society would even claim absolute safety as a worthy ideal, because it would require total state control over its citizens’ lives. Liberty has meaning only if we still believe in it when terrible things happen and a false government security blanket beckons." -Ron Paul

2007-08-15 13:55:00 Author: patrick Posted: Wed Aug 15, 2007 7:55 am (GMT -4) I've used XPlite 1.8 before and it's good for an installed OS but If I remember correctly, it wasn't useful for disc editing. I'm using NLite to edit the disc files. I think I'm gonna make one and call it "Gearhead Edition" and include basically everything you could possibly need to run any kind of shop. Shop manuals and software like Alldata, Mitchell's on demand, etc, 3D Modeling software and instructions, autocad, dreamweaver and frontpage. engine tuning software for Honda, Nissan, Toyota, Ford, GM, and anyothers I can find, photoshop, paint color software, OBDII diagnostic software, some kind of ticket creating and tracking software, possibly dealership managing software, quickbooks, works, openoffice, and more. Other programs will be stuff like antivirus, adaware, other malware/spyware tools, firewall, daemon tools and an arsenal of ISO's, some advanced network "hacking" tools, and other r...

2007-08-15 10:30:00 Le icone sono sicuramente uno dei punti principali da tenere in considerazione nei nostri computer. 2007-08-14 23:06:00 Author: Daniel Posted: Tue Aug 14, 2007 5:06 pm (GMT -4) A few things. First, look into Avant Window Manager for linux... very OSX-esque. Second, a great program is XPLite, which will strip a lot of XP shit out very quickly. It's made by the company that was commissioned to remove Internet Explorer from '98 during the anti-trust case, which they did.. and ultimately was able to drop the install size for 98 to about 11mb or something insane like that. I like XP WinBorg edition when I'm doing a hurried install -- saves time installing a lot of programs that I'll obviously need. As for drive formats, there's a great little program called ext2fsd for windows that allows you to mount ext2/3 filesystems as drives in windows. I have been unable thus far to get my ext3 to automount at boot, but I can manually mount it any time I need to copy/move files, and since I only reboot once a week or so its not too much of a hassle. I believe ext2 will automount at boot no problem/_____...

2007-08-13 12:23:00 Author: patrick Posted: Mon Aug 13, 2007 6:23 am (GMT -4) I believe I have it all figured out and will be doing this at some point this week. In addition, I will be going one step further and hacking up XP to better suit my needs. I'm going to be getting rid of all the "fluff" like idiot security messages, help files, error reporting, and then adding all the service packs/hotfixes. I should be able to clear over 100mb of crap files which will give me room on the disc to add certain programs I know I'm gonna need. I'll also be modifying the registry to speed things up and remove what's unnecessary. Plus crack the activation for future updates. Perhaps I'll make it available for download if all works out well. As for Mac Os X, I have to use a modified version compatible with my hardware, but it does exist so that's a go! Linux is the easiest and will be loaded last since I'll be using grub to control the booting. I have it mapped out...it's just...

2007-08-13 06:13:00 Author: patrick Subject: Linux + Windows + Mac Os X on one box!?!?!Posted: Mon Aug 13, 2007 12:13 am (GMT -4) I've been thinking about it for a while and I'm going to re-do my computer. No hardware changes, just software. I've strictly been using Linux for a while now. I currently have a quad boot setup with Ubuntu i386, Ubuntu x64, Gentoo 2006, and Ichthux i386. For the most part I only use 1 version of linux and the other three are just kinda taking up space. I did it originally to try out the different versions and now that I've established which version I like the best, I never use the others any more. So I want to clear them out. At the same time, Linux does not support any of the engine tuning software I need for ECU modifying. Running it inside an emulator is too slow for me so I'm going to install windows specifically for that, and for cross-platform web development testing. I've been curious to try to get Tiger OsX working on my AMD 64bit machine which...

Eight Financial Reasons You Should Use Mac OS
2007-08-10 21:41:00 The advent of Vista and Mac OS X, along with the ascension of Linux, add new dimensions to a long-time controversy. Now more than ever before, the Mac OS is the most cost effective operating system of all. The debate over the financial advantages of various OSes first sparked around 15 years ago, when the Gartner Group industry analyst firm came up with the concept of total cost of ownership (TCO). Since then, a number of other theoretical models have also been coined to weigh the business pros and cons of various OSes.read more | digg story...

Strictly for nerds - Using Putty Private keys on Mac OS X
2007-08-01 13:41:00 Anyone who has worked with me will know about my lifelong avowed hatred of version control sytems. The problem isn't the concept of version control itself, just awful implementatons and usage of it. I've always found version control to be complicated, and necesarily so. I've tried reading books on the subject. They make sense. Then I try using someone's system. It doesn't work. It's not sensible and practical and straightforward. It's not like it says in the books. On top of this, the user interface for these systems is poor or non-existent. You can talk about Ubuntu until it comes out of your ears, but surely in te 21st century we could have invented something better than the command line to do stuff? It's totally unintuitive. I appreciate that front-end developers are increasingly nerdy these days, as the separation of design, presentation and data layers becomes ever more pronounced. But for someone who thinks predominantly with the left side of their brain (...

Apple: Run Mac OS X Apps On Linux?
2007-07-30 23:55:00 Apple: Run Mac OS X Apps On Linux? Journal written by Anthony Baby (1015379) and posted by kdawson on Monday July 30, @08:36AM from the must-be-a-layer-somewhere dept. I have the urge to commit my 24" Core 2 Duo iMac to a single Linux operating system, thus giving up the goodness of my beloved Mac OS X. I am not a stranger to Linux, but I am a stranger to running Mac apps on Linux. On my PowerPC I can use SheepShaver to run Classic apps. The Mac-on-Linux project can run OS X apps, but it requires a PowerPC, not an x86. Virtualizing and emulating are inefficient, especially given the wonderful results the WINE project has had in getting Windows apps to run on Linux. What I would like is an equivalent: a software compatibility layer that will allow Linux to run Mac OS X apps at native performance. I believe there is some additional complexity in accomplishing this. Mac OS X apps aren't just Mac OS X apps. They are Carbon. They...

Mac OSX Tip Of The Weekend - Ultra-Magnify
2007-07-23 05:08:00 Good Weekend Ladies and Gents,This quick mac tip can save you alot of time by giving you quick access to an ultra magnifier built right into OSX. It's done, without any prior setting changes, by holding down the Ctrl key while 'zooming in' (from bottom to top) with 2 fingers on the touchpad. Now maybe this is a trick that some people knew about, but I was shocked when a friend of mine showed it to me this weekend, oddly enough way far from civiliziation in the Catskill mountains. We both happened to bring our (previously unbeknownst to us) matching Powerbooks. I thought I had all the shortcuts down, but I concede my friend Junior had a great one that I had no clue about. Did anyone else know about this? Comments welcome... and BEGIN!Peace1Commodore 64 (The one you used to play Bruce Lee on)Note:Blog Post bolded for quick skimmability Edit: The feature was introduced in the first Aluminum powerbooks to run 1.5GHz.
