Shanghai's Maglev In Real Time
2008-10-12 23:27:00 The fastest I have ever gone on ground was in the Shanghai Maglev. It really is pretty amazing to be going past cars on a highway as though the cars are standing still. In its post, "Ride with me on the Shanghai Maglev," the Little Red Blog, shows us video of a Shanghai Maglev ride. It really is the next best thing to being there. Check it out.

MagLev Train Received Funding To Travel From Disneyland To Las Vegas
2008-06-30 06:56:00 MagLev train received funding to travel from Disneyland to Las Vegas. The magnetic levitating train will travel in speeds from 180 mph average to 310 mph. The news that President Bush signed a transportation bill worth $45 million to continue America’s fastest train initiative happened earlier this month. This will help shuttle more visitors to ... Disneyland to Las Vegas on Maglev Train
2008-06-08 17:34:00 There has been an update regarding the proposed Anaheim-Las Vegas maglev train. The floating train project is moving forward as part of a transportation bill signed by President Bush that puts aside $45 million for the 300 mile-per-hour train. This project initially called for a $3 to $5 billion budget to get things started. The train is planned to sprint people from Disneyland to Vegas in under two hours! No word on proposed launches or actual construction, however, it’s assumed that Disney will get involved with some extra cash at some point. Slashdot
Harry Reid Wants $45,000,000 for MagLev Train to Disneyland
2008-04-21 10:36:00 While Nevada faces “a multi-billion shortfall in basic highway, bus and other transportation needs,” Harry Reid is earmarking $45 million dollars for a train to Disneyland: Start talking about magnetic levitation trains and people quickly fall into two categories: dreamy-eyed futurists whose eyes widen with the promise of 300 mph travel or dismissive cynics who see the next boondoggle heading down the track. When it comes to building a maglev train between Las Vegas and Southern California, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has remained a believer. This week, he is risking the wrath of the Senate anti-pork czars to secure $45 million to push the train project along. Who wouldn’t want a 300 mile per hour train in Southern California? So what reason does land baron Harry Reid give for this train to So Cal? Pure show: ?If it?s going to be really done in a big way, a Las Vegas way, the magnetic levitation would be the way to do it,? Reid said. ?We could bring someone...

Shanghai Maglev Train
2008-03-10 05:05:00 ?????????The world's fastest train with passenger service is not France's TGV or the Japanese Bullet Train, Germany's high speed service or Taiwan's new ultra-fast lines. It is the maglev train from Shanghai's Pudong International Airport into Longyan Road, in Pudong, where you can transfer to a subway line that will take you farther into the city center. The airport express train covers 30 km (18.6 miles) in under 8 minutes at speeds that hit 431 km/hour (268 mph). The ride is so brief, however, that the train only stays at the top speed for a very short amount of time before beginning to slow down prior to arrival. The system cost more than one billion USD to build and began operation in 2004. Plans are afoot to extend the line to Shanghai's other airport, Hongquio International Airport, and to the area of the city where Expo 2010 will be held.Trains that have maglev technology use electromagnetic force to guide and move cars forward. Japanese rail company to build $45 billion MagLev train
2007-12-31 19:56:00 In the United States we've squandered hundreds of billions of dollars in the last five years. Our political "leaders" bicker over fuel economy rules that ultimately still won't get us to where most of the world already is today. Meanwhile the rest of the world is racing ahead, developing technologies that will provide real transportation alternatives. Japan and Europe have long had trains that go well over 200mph. The Japanese are now preparing to step up to the next level. The Central Japan Railway Co. is preparing to build a 290km magnetically levitated (maglev) train line between Tokyo and central Japan. The target speed for the train is 310 mph. Central Japan Railway has a maglev test train that ran 361 mph in 2003. The company is now planning to move ahead with the project in spite of not getting any government subsidies.[Source: AFP]

The Wind of Change Comes with Maglev Wind Turbines
2007-12-19 21:10:00 It took developers almost 20 years since the “Wind of Change”, a 1990 power ballad written by Klaus Meine, vocalist of Scorpions, to come up with maglev wind turbines. The new type of...

MagLev
2007-11-27 01:12:00 Growing up, I was always enthralled by the perpetual motion machine paradox. It's one of those things that just nags at you, convincing you that there must be a way. In my mind I always envisioned a perpetual motion machine that was designed similar to a Christmas Carousel, except instead of powered by the heat from candles, powered by magnets below and on the turbine blades angled to repel. In actuality, this would not be considered a true perpetual motion machine, as the magnets create an electromagnetic field, which would be an external energy force powering the perpetual machine. Eventually, I figured this out and my dreams of winning the Nobel Prize in Physics was shattered. Yet, an article on Inhabitat reminded me of my childhood scheme. The MagLev is a giant wind turbine suspended in air by magnets. The beauty of this design (okay, so its massive size probably bashes all hope of beauty) is that very little friction slows its spinning. Really, it is only susceptible to a...

Maglev wind turbines 1000x more efficient than normal windmills
2007-11-26 10:46:00 Â We've seen a couple innovative wind power solutions pop up, but none that claim to offer the benefits of maglev wind turbines, which use full-permanent magnets to nearly eliminate friction by "floating" the blades above the base. According to developers, the technology is capable of scaling to massive sizes, with a proposed $53M turbine able enough to replace 1000 traditional windmills

Germany to launch a 310 mile-per-hour maglev train
2007-09-29 04:08:00 I've been on quite a few flights lately, and usually, the worst part is not the airplane ride itself, but everything else that goes along with it. Like, either getting dropped off with all of your luggage or parking your car in the long-term lot, or taking a taxi ride. It sure would be nice if there was a good way to get to the airport that didn't cost an arm and a leg and was fast. According to this article, it sounds like Germany has the right idea with their new maglev project. Traveling from Munich's city center to the airport, the train can reach speeds of 310 miles per hour. Shouldn't take too long, then. The ride should be pretty good too, considering that maglev is short for magnetic levitation, so the train isn't even really riding on the track at all. Wouldn't it be nice to see trains like this connecting major cities here in the States too? Related: Japan set to introduce magnetic levitation trains by 2025 [Source: BBC via Slashdot via Engadget]
Germany to build first commercial Maglev train line
2007-09-27 08:26:00 Germany's richest state agreed Tuesday to build the country's first commercial high-speed magnetic levitation train line, but officials warned the price tag could be heftier than first thought. After months of talks, the Bavarian government, industry leaders and Deutsche Bahn rail company signed an agreement to build the line after a late-night deal capped with a champagne toast. Authorities said they had finalised 1.85 billion euros (2.6 billion dollars) in financing for the next-generation train line, which is to connect the state capital Munich with its airport, 37 kilometres (23 miles) away.

New: The Maglev wind turbine
2007-08-01 19:29:00 Most modern turbines are actually very inefficient and only capture a small percentage of the wind’s energy, mainly because of friction. The dream of wind turbine designers is to achieve the total transfer of energy produced by the wind without the friction. With magnetic levitation, or Maglev, the wind turbine floats on a magnetic cushion, eliminating all ...

Germany steps up pressure on Iran with maglev feasibility study

I rode Yamanashi Maglev Line at 311 mph with Harvard Club of Japan with Goo
2007-04-29 21:58:00 This evening in California I experienced riding the Yamanashi Maglev Test Line in Japan from Google video - watch on a big screen and Listen with your headphones when the digital marquee displayed in real time increases in momentum approaching 502 kilometers per hour (311 mph). Thanks to the Harvard Japan Club and Google video network people can be inspired to visit Japan. The awe inspiring video was filmed at the JR Railway Technical Research Institute’s Yamanashi Maglev Test Line. The first time I experienced the rumbling sound of thunder in the Summer time in daylight was from the race track at Sears Point Raceway in Northern California - now known as the Infineon Raceway. From what I discovered from a travel book at Kinokuniya, the driving force of Shinkansen can rumble an ‘earth-like tremor’ shaking the walls of nearby residential homes while a loud roar can be heard. Luxurious and modern, passengers are surrounded by a panoramic picturesque view of the na...
:: Travel :: Maglev Train in Shanghai ::
2007-01-26 11:36:02 I have been to China twice. The people are nice; the eyes slanting, the vehicles on the road can?t stop honking. The Shanghai drivers will honk at absolutely everything, from a stray cat trying to cross the road to the 90 year old grandma on the sidewalk to the motorist in front for dropping a dime. Luckily, the first commercial high-speed maglev line in the world does not have a horn!! I am very surprise with how fast the train can go without much vibration I?ve taken the train from Pudong International Airport and stop at Longyang Road Station (actually it?s the only route this Maglev train service covered). It cost me 50yuan (RM25 or USD7) for one way trip. The total track is about 30km and the train takes 7minutes and 20 seconds to complete the journey. The top speed during my journey is 431km per hour and even at this speed, the vibration & sound is lesser than Malaysia?s own wibbly-wobbly LRT & KTM Komuter. And to my surprise, I can still enjoy the view of Shan...
