Magpie

Update

Just to let you know about recent happenings with Maggie and Co, it's that time of year when the birds arrange their territories for the next twelve months. Not much action with our birds this year though (not yet, anyway). I got a clue that the Mags gang and Larry (grey butcherbird) gang have settled their quarrel. Last week, when I went up to the gate to call Larry, he and Maggie flew in side-by-side, then Maggie landed and Larry went to his nearby tree. But it was a definite signal to me that they are on amicable terms again.  read more &raqu-o;
Is Wendy William?
2008-03-15 02:43:00
Over the past few months, our birds' feathers have all generally improved - Vicky's, for example, have grown nicely where she had a bald spot for about six months. But our new adult magpie, Wendy, has surprised us. Slowly but surely, her off-white neck feathers have got whiter - whiter and whiter. Are we going to have to change Wendy's name to William?  read more &raqu-o;

Settling In
2008-02-19 11:25:00
Over the past few weeks our various baby birds have been gaining confidence and getting to know us better. At first when they come, they follow their parents around for food, then they try a bit for themselves, picking it up off the grass experimentally. (They have surprising difficulty when very young picking up their own food, even though they have already become accomplished fliers.)  read more &raqu-o;

Maggie does a remarkable thing
2008-01-28 06:25:00
Last Friday I was taking a water can up to the front gate to change the water in the bowl up there. Maggie was behind me pottering around. Suddenly I saw him running past me to beat me to the water bowl, getting there while I was still about six feet away, and then he stood facing me and drinking water. I had a nice chat with him, but the meaning of this action came home to me forcefully while I was walking back from the gate. He was trying to tell me that there was already water in the bowl and I didn't have to lug the big water can all that way.  read more &raqu-o;

A beautiful thing
2008-01-06 15:34:00
There is a beautiful thing about animals that I am sure readers who have the privilege to observe wild animals closely and make friendships with them will have also observed: we give them little things like food, that cost us next to nothing, for a long time they will they have no chance to give anything back; but when they do get that chance, they give everything they have.  read more &raqu-o;

Divebombing magpies
2007-12-06 13:29:00
The other day on the news there was a child who was attacked by a magpie, and tragically his eye was damaged. He was an amazing kid: the reporter asked him whose fault it was and he said Dad's, because dad forgot to tell him not to ride his bike in the magpie season. I wondered why it was only dad and not mum, but apart from that, it's a pretty wise way to look on life. But what I wanted to think about today was whether anything positive can be done to improve the sometimes poor relations between people and magpies.  read more &raqu-o;
Reds sink sorry Magpies
2007-11-25 15:14:00
Liverpool players returned from the international break in style to cruise to a 3-0 victory at St James’ Park against a lacklustre Newcastle side. Steven Gerrard had a superb game, ignoring the ignorent booing from the Toon Armey to show why he is world class despite recent criticism following his performances ...

The State of the Magpies (Part 4)
2007-11-13 11:34:00
I've told you about our magpies, grey and pied butcherbirds, and the noisy miners. They are really the core of Maggie's circle, but they have lots of other friends.  read more &raqu-o;
The State of the Magpies (Part 3)
2007-11-10 08:35:00
These "State of" posts are to fill everyone in on the bird community around our house. I've told you about the magpies, though: Maggie and his family, Vicky, Sophie, Wendy, and this year's bub, Josie, and then on the other side Billy, Maggie's adopted younger brother who seems to have had a big group of bubs with his partner, Polly. So I'd better get on and tell you about the other birds in the community.  read more &raqu-o;

I said I'd tell you about the "other" magpie we have here who is not in Maggie's family, but events have moved so fast they've overtaken my story.  read more &raqu-o;
The State of the Magpies

Since Winged Hearts is just starting out from a blank slate right now, I thought it might be helpful to try to 'put you in the picture' with our various bird friendships as they stand at the present time.  read more &raqu-o;

Faye Happy To Be A Magpie
2007-10-10 15:05:00
Former Wanderer, Abdoulaye Faye, has expressed his happiness at St. James? Park and claims that other clubs were interested in signing him too but chose Newcastle United to be with former boss, Big Sam Allardyce. Here is what Faye had to say: “I had offers from other clubs, it wasn’t just Newcastle. Manchester City, Everton and Wigan ...
Not the Thieving Magpie

A wee video about a seagull in Aberdeen Scotland, came to my attention recently and I just had to write about it. See YouTube for the full flicks.My poem below followed as a matter of course. Surprisingly, none of the papers I contacted in Scotland seem to want to publish it. I guess it's old news to them.Gull LootUp in Scotland, way up northFar beyond the Firth of Forth,Therein swooped a brigand bird,Leaving trail of more than turd--Crumbs of crisps, have you not heard?Sam, the locals have him tagged,Over 24 he?s bagged.Cheese and onion, if you please;Carries back to his cronies--Does it with aplomb and ease.Waits ?til shopman?s at the till,Saunters in and steals his fill.Skitters out with bright orange bag;On the cobbles has to drag--Of his conquest now can brag.Not the leader of a gang,He pulls off the whole shebang,With a snatch that?s double-quick;Fearless , feathered, that?s his shtick--Gulls them all with his slapstick.Kathleen Mortensen © 2007

I may now be a Magpie
2007-08-03 09:38:00
So Alan Smith may sign for Newcastle. When he left Leeds as they left the Premiership I said I would support whichever club he went to with one exception. So following Murphy's Law he went to the one club I shall always execrate. Now he is leaving the Red Devils I may again show interest in a premiership club. I tried to enthuse over Spurs with their former Leeds men and a Christian from Korea but I really have no passion for London clubs, especially when some are hard put to field even one Englishman. Arsenal are a French team, or rather French Africa. Smith though is a Yorkshire Terrier of a footballer, the sort of dog who is very snappy and irritating to people.

Recently, I decided I wanted a flask.Browsing local stores and the Internet wasn't enough to find the flask that I wanted as no designs we're to my liking... at all.I thus decided I needed to create my own but having no talent, I realised I needed to find someone with talent that would do my design. It took a lot of searching but I found this website through Ebay -> http://happymagpie.com/etching/-index.html.I decided to order a custom flask from this website as soon as I took a look at what she does through sandblasting and engraving.I sent the following 2 pictures to have engraved on my own flask, you can see Radiohead artwork in the crying minotaur and the Presse Ne Pas Avaler I have on a T-shirt that was also worn by a certain Thom Yorke, not mine, he has his own) :I just received my flask, and look at the result :The photos don't render the full quality of Amy's work, but if you go on her website you'll see a ton of other things she has done. I truly recommend her should y...
Sunday, May 13th, 2007: Magpies in Helsingborg - One for sorrow, two for jo
2007-05-13 12:03:00
What I think:One for sorrow Two for joy...But what does it mean? What does it mean to see one magpie? Or two? Is it all a personal thing, based upon superstitions we've heard since we were very young, like 27 years old (or younger, if you're going on 26, for example)?But I covered this rhyme, along with its implications for me personally, on March 5th last year. Read about it here ->In a nutshell, I wrote about how here in Helsingborg I always ever see just a single magpie. As the superstition goes, to protect yourself from imminent sorrow, you're supposed to say something like "Say hello to your brother", implying that the particular magpie you see is not an only child (or not an "only chick"?), and that he/she usually hangs out with his/her brother (he/she never has a sister), but the brother in question has a touch of the old bird flu. Or something.Well, strangely, I've noticed something a bit different over the past recent months. I still only ever see a single magpie when I...

Caring For The Cute Magpie

They are birds of the woodland. The American and the European species are the ones best known as talkers, and have pure white patches on the wings and abdomen. ...
