Indonesia, Malaysia to intensify co-op in Malacca Strait
2008-03-18 06:05:00
The Indonesian navy and its Malaysian counterpart have agreed to increase cooperation in maintaining security in the Malacca Strait, Antara news agency reported on Tuesday. The agreement was reached during a meeting between Indonesian Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Sumardjono and his Malaysian counterpart Admiral Tan Sri Ramlan Mohamed Ali at the Indonesian Navy's Headquarters in Cilangkap, East Jakarta, on Monday. "We hope that all forms of cooperation that had been established so far between the two navies would be stepped up in the future," Admiral Mohamed Ali said after the signing of the agreement. The Malacca strait is one of the world's busiest sea and trade lanes as it links West Asia and East Asia. At least 50,000 cargo ships use the strait every year. The 800-km-long strait can be sailed through in 12 hours, which is a much shorter period than the 24 hours needed to pass through the Sunda Strait (1,630 km) or the 70 hours required to navigate the Lombok Strait (2,78...

Malacca (Melaka) River Cruise (CNY 2008 Trips)
2008-02-12 07:44:00
Malacca (Melaka) state administration develops the river since 2005 to 'pollution-free water', gardens on its banks and pedestrian walkways along the river. This is the river where the war begin and end, and also the place where Melaka (Malacca) began. It was a busy port and a tourism river today. The Malacca River was dubbed as "Venice of the East" by European seafarers.I take this CNY holiday to visit this glorious history river. The jetty is at the opposite of Traffic Police HQ after the Dutch Square (so called Red House). N2 11.588 E102 14.834(Refer from the map). I was confusing when I saw another jetty at the Dutch Square, but the boat men ask us to get the jetty at the place mention above.45 minutes journey for MYR5.00 (adult) & MYR2.00 (children). There must be a minimum of 8 persons for each fiberglass boat ride. My daughter was very excited because this is her first boat ride. (Best ride time 5pm-7pm)Beautiful sunset with the boat......Inside the boat....You will see...

Chinese New Year At Jonker Walk
2008-02-10 10:03:00
Jonker Walk is the glittering jewel of the historical town of Malacca. You should go to Jonker Walk when you are visiting Malacca. Otherwise, it's just like leaving a jewelry shop with empty hands.Jonker Walk was decorated with numerous of lanterns during Chinese New Year. Visitors started flocking to Jong Walk when the sun began to set. The night of Jonker Walk bustled until the excited crowd left Jonker Walk at midnight. Before becoming a popular tourist attraction, Jonker Walk is a narrow street with a few antique shops. It's totally different now. Jonker Walk is a busy street during daytime. Tourists stroll along the pedestrian walkway in front of the shops. Jonker Walk turns into a bustling street at night from Friday to Sunday. Hopefully it would be seven nights a week in future. The stuffs that available at Jonker Walk range from local delicacy, souvenirs to antiques. If you are in Malacca, remember to witness yourself the night fever of Jonker Walk.
Shopping Rush
2008-02-05 18:28:00
A large number of shoppers flock to most of the shopping malls in town these few days. Shopping rush is just like hot cake. You can see how the shopping rush was from the above video clip. It was recorded last Saturday. This hyper mart opens from 8 am to 11 pm on Monday to Thursday and from 8 am to 12 midnight on Friday to Sunday during this festive fever.I went to this hyper mart twice to shop for Chinese New Year stuffs.. I bought a full trolley of food, cookies and snacks for each trip and spent few hundreds ringgit.Wang Xiao Er guo nian, yi nian bu ru yi nian. Nian nian nan guo, nian nian guo. These two sentences are in Chinese. Wang Xiao Er was a poor man. He became poorer year by year. However, he had to celebrate Chinese New Year no matter how poor he was. This means that Chinese New Year is a special festival to Chinese. I am as poor as Wang Xiao Er and have to shop for celebrating Chinese New Year too.

MALACCA: Malacca has launched a WiFi service to cover the entire state. The Wireless Melaka project hopes to cover 70% of populated areas and deliver low cost Internet access, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam. “I am very happy that wireless Internet access is now available in three locations – two at MITC (Melaka International Trade Centre) and at UiTM (Universiti Teknologi Mara) on Jalan Hang Tuah,” he told a press conference yesterday. He said the service would be implemented in three phases at a cost of RM2.5mil, adding that the state government had asked the consortium handling the project for Internet access at parklands and subsidised access fees for students and the poor. Indonesian boat sinks in Malacca strait
2007-12-26 03:15:00
RESCUE workers combed waters off western Indonesia after a small boat sank in stormy seas, leaving at least two passengers dead and seven others missing, police said on Tuesday. 'The captain could not control the boat because of the high waves, and it eventually capsized in the Malacca Strait,' said Agus Sarjito, a police chief on nearby Sumatra island. The motorised, wooden ship was traveling between two coastal villages in Riau province on Monday when the accident occurred, he said, adding almost all the passengers on board were women and children. Strong winds and 3-metre waves forced rescuers to briefly suspend search operations on Tuesday, Mr Agus said. Indonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com-
Malacca tower’s revolving top finally put in place
2007-12-25 10:12:00
MALACCA: It was a slow process but the revolving top of the Taming Sari tower in Banda Hilir was finally put in place yesterday. The RM23mil, 116m-high tower, now at its makeshift location, would be moved to its permanent location 15m away in a few days’ time. The state’s latest tourist attraction, is expected to be opened in February. The tower, named after Hang Tuah’s mythical kris, and built using Swiss technology, will be the first tower in the country to have a fully revolving structure. It can accommodate up to 80 people at one time. The revolving tower, some 100m above ground, will make a complete circle in five minutes. There is also a restaurant, convenience store and a souvenir shop on the ground floor. The tower was to be built near the Parameswara Jetty but work stopped when an ancient Portuguese wall was discovered at the site near the Stadthuys. A ground-probing radar survey was undertaken to ensure that there were no historical artefacts or cons...

2007-11-12 08:00:00
Wake up in the morning quite late. After settle and pack everything, we checked out from the hotel and drive for our “Brunch” (Breakfast and lunch together). We were looking at one Dim Sum (點心) restaurant along Jalan Gajah Berang. Info from 9W2KG. After around 30 minutes of merry-go-round, we found the shop finally. The restaurant call “Ban Hong Xiang Tea House”. (N2°12.524 E102°14.567) 9W2KG advised me to go early or after the breakfast time, because the place is pack and crowded during morning session. The best time is after 11am. When we reach the shop, they are about to close. Luckily there are still some dim sum enough for us! All were delicious! The meat ball was good serves with homemade chili! Most of the 'dim sum' here are worth trying. No regrets for finding it! This shop seems like a family business to me, because I can see most employees here have similar face. Look like brother and sister. The shop open from Monday to Sunday, will close ...

The info also given by 9W2KG, he said that the herbal tea only available in this particular shop. You can’t find it anywhere in Malaysia or this region anymore! Because of curiosity, we decided to find it.Along Bukit Cina Lane, we were ‘Merry-Go-Round’ again!! We asked anyone who walk along the street. After an hour, when we about to give up, surprisingly see THIS!! GPS coordinates : N2°11.691 E102°15.131 We are wondering why we cannot spot it after so many round, it’s because it’s not a shop! It’s an old house along the road.I bought half dozen of it, cost me RM24.00. Wah! Very economy! We spotted this Colourful Tony's Guest House while driving away of this Herbal Tea shop.N2°11.686 E102°15.158

Heard about this village long time ago, never have chance to drive around. So I decide to go there for some photos. (About 10 minutes drive from Hotel Equatorial) Basically the village looks like ordinary malay village, the structure also doesn’t represent the culture of Portuguese. You will not notice this if you miss the signage “Portuguese Village”. The only picture I snap is this San Pedro Devils Curry Restaurant. N2°11.018 E102°16.031

First Chinese Bible from Malacca
2007-10-02 01:53:00
The 200th anniversary of the arrival in China of the first Protestant missionary, Robert Morrison, who contributed much to western knowledge of Chinese, is being marked by a display in the Bodleian Library, Oxford. Robert Morrison (1782–1834, right in photo), from Northumbria in northern England, arrived in the port of Canton on 7 September 1807, commissioned by the new London Missionary Society first to learn Chinese, and then to make a Chinese translation of the Bible. Despite Qing law preventing foreigners from learning Chinese, the East India Company policy excluding missionaries, and opposition from Portuguese Catholics who were already working in the country, Morrison mastered the language with help from faithful Chinese assistants. In 1809 he became official interpreter for the East India Company alongside his mentor, Sir George Staunton (1781–1859), the only other Englishman who knew Chinese at the time. Though often critical of the Company and of British governmen...

What did some Malaysian Malays say about Malacca?s piggy incident?
2007-09-08 04:50:00
