Review of Book "Interpreter of maladies"
2007-05-05 13:06:00
The stories of immigrants are what Jhumpa Lahiri has presented to us in her compilation of short stories, “Interpreter of Maladies”. Originating from India and its subcontinent and lasting in continents of west is highlight of her writing. The conflicting cultures, lost relations, effluent in home away from away and other challenges faced are what we see in this book. Being an immigrant herself, the pains and gains of their life are not alien to her, thus well presented by the author. The ups and downs of housewives, the generation gap, the fatal attractions and much better interpreted. The nine story book is sewn together with story of an American born Indian couple offering condolences to each other every night and dealing with loss of their unborn child. Another story set in 1960s when East Pakistan was at unrest to form a new state as Bangladesh, a resident on work in USA experiences and dilemmas of its family in region of tension and war. Narrated by a small girl, one can...
Pear Marmalade
2007-04-28 11:46:00
I had never been a big fan of marmalade until I discovered how delicious it was to just spoon a tiny little bit of it on cheeses. Usually, marmalades are preserves made by boiling the pulp and part of the rind or skin of citrus fruits with sugar to the consistency of jam. However, marmalades can be made from almost any fruit and any berries: Unripe tiny aubergines, green apricots, quinces, small green bitter oranges, rhubarbs mixed with raspberries ... you name it, I probably got a recipe. This recipe of pear marmalade serves about 8-10 at a buff table.INGREDIENTS:* 3 pears (ab. 250 g)* 2 tablespoons water* lime, zest and juice* 1 teaspoon Certo fruit pectin (powder)* 2 dl (200 ml) sugarMETHOD:1. Peel the pears, remove the seeds.2. Cut them into smaller chunks and put in a saucepan.3. Add water, lime zest and juice.4. Cook covered fr about 10 minutes.5. Mix pectin with 2 tablespoons of the sugar.6. Stir the mixture down into the saucepan.7. Add the remaining sugar and cook for a...

Seville Orange Marmalade with Bay Leaves and Chiles
2007-03-29 06:26:00
Here it is! I came dangerously close to not cooking my headily fragrant Seville orange. I had never made marmalade or any kind of preserves, and I wasn?t ready to bite into a whole new area of cookery, especially not one that involved straining anything through muslin, but then I read this comment from Lindy: We never see Seville oranges in Pittsburgh. I am jealous, jealous, jealous. In case you missed my answer: First, don't be jealous; Pittsburgh is the only place I ever saw a vegetable called Jew's mallow, so that's pretty cool.Second, this is for you. I was thinking I am so busy, and the holidays are so soon, and my writing project is so massive, that maybe it was enough just to get a few pots of orangeade out of Senora Sevilla, but having read your comment just a few minutes ago, I said, if they can't find Seville oranges in Pittsburgh, I just HAVE to make marmalade, so I fished my now thrice-poached orange out of the icebox, hacked it to gobbeties, mixed it with an...

Bar Opp, Inorbit - Malad
2006-04-18 05:17:00
Before visiting So_a bar at Goregaon West, I went to one more bar located at Malad Link Road, Opp. to Inorbit..the bar name is “_reen G___en Restaurant and Orchestra Bar”. As i entered inside, it was full of middle age people, most of them were form high class societies, how i knew that???? there were loads of cars parked outside… Again, I had to cross 2 doors to make a move towards the bar. It was small place, with sofas covering all the 3 walls & at the stage at 4th wall. The orchestra was also matching to the people sitting there….I felt like some one had made all the people including customers and bargirls and singers and muzicians to sit there on a gun point. No action, no excitement, and no hot chips….oh chicks! So, finally I didn’t stayed there for more than 2 minutes and left out.
