The price of petrol in India have already gone through the roof. Reason? Global oil prices are at all-time high levels (about $139 per barrel) and the nation’s public sector oil companies can no longer sustain the heavy subsidy on petroleum products. So which are the nations where the price of petrol is ...

‘Too much, too sudden’ - Malaysia

‘Too much, too sudden’  - Malaysia Businesses warn of trickle-down effect on prices of goods, services By Hazlin Hassan, Malaysia Correspondent  STREET PROTEST: Malaysia’s opposition was quick to seize on the fuel price hikes, with street protests like this one in Kuala Lumpur. De facto opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim slammed the increases and there were promises of more protests.   KUALA LUMPUR - MALAYSIA’S overnight increases in petrol and diesel prices yesterday triggered widespread criticism by businesses, the opposition and ordinary people. They called for a review of the steep hikes - 41 per cent for petrol and 63 per cent for diesel - announced on Wednesday and implemented yesterday. The Associated Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia said the increase was simply too much, too soon for many manufacturers, and wished the government had raised prices gradually. Malaysia’s new fuel prices are still among the lowest in Asia, but t...

Singaporeans are still generally calm, while recent fuel price hikes fumed our Malaysian friends. Petrol Price Hike in Malaysia on Immediate Basis from RM1.92 to RM2.70!!!
2008-06-04 13:27:00
I just checked my window because I heard people "honking" their car and it is uneasy. My house is located about 500m from the road and about 500m from a petrol station. I have the road view from my apartment. When looking around, there is road jam about 1km and it is still jam. This is awkward as not everyday like this. Not because of peak time as 7.30pm is off duty hours.I just received a call from my brother saying that the petrol hike would hit after 12 midnight today. I got shocked as there were news about it saying that the increase will be on August 2008. It was so sudden and there is no alert.I just checked Malaysiakini and double confirm that the price hike is confirmed. It is 40.6% price hike in petrol, from RM1.92/liter to RM2.70/liter. Diesel from RM1.58/liter to RM2.58/liter. The jam is about 1 km from petrol station and I'm sure the crowd won't less until 12 midnight today.

Chang Jung-Lin Wins Guinness 9 Ball Leg in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia!
2008-06-01 11:37:00
Billiards update! From the Guinness 9 Ball Tour, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia: Once again, Chinese-Taipei's Chang Jung-Lin, makes it a hat-trick of titles as he takes down his third consecutive Guinness 9-Ball Tour title at Genting Highlands. The Taiwanese was simply unbeatable in the finals as he muscled his way past Filipino pool player Antonio Gabica, aka Gaga, with a score of 11-6. Chang Jung-Lin came out of the blocks like a bullet and raced to a 4-0 lead before Gabica managed to get his first rack on the board to make it 4-1. Gaga's confidence went back up and he took down the next three racks to set it up nicely at 4-4. The crowd was ecstatic as they rallied behind the Filipino pool player but it was all downhill from there on as the defending champion refused to allow Gaga Gabica a chance to get back in the game. If it was a boxing match, it would have been a done deal as Chang pulverized the table and snatched the next six racks to go on the hill at 10-4. By this ti...

Malaysia Fuel ban: JB kiosks fear loss of business

Malaysia Fuel ban: JB kiosks fear loss of business  As much as 90 per cent of their customers are Singaporeans By Arlina Arshad  RUNNING DRY: After the ban on foreign-registered vehicles filling up on fuel within 50km of Malaysia’a borders comes into force on Friday, Singapore motorists will have less incentive to drive to Johor Baru on shopping or eating trips. — PHOTO: JOYCE FANG   JOHOR petrol station operators and businesses are up in arms over the Malaysian government’s move to ban foreign-registered vehicles from topping up their fuel tanks at petrol stations within 50km of the country’s borders. Without business from Singaporeans, Johor petrol kiosks say they will ‘die’ because as much as 90 per cent of their business comes from Singapore motorists. It is understood the move will also hit petrol stations in the north patronised by Thais. With Singaporeans barred from topping up at Johor stations within 50km of the Singapore-Malaysia bord...

2008-05-28 01:16:00
Singaporeans likely to cut down on trips to Malaysia once petrol sale ban starts By Asha Popatlal, SINGAPORE: Some Singaporeans said they may cut back on trips to Malaysia once the proposed ban on the sale of petrol and diesel to foreign registered vehicles within a 50-kilometre radius of Malaysia’s borders takes effect. The ban is expected to kick in as early as this Friday in a move to prevent abuse of heavy fuel subsidies. However, Malaysia’s Domestic Trade Minister, Shahrir Samad, said on Tuesday that the ban is a temporary one. It will be lifted once a new subsidy mechanism to replace the existing scheme, where everyone is subsidised, is put in place. Still, the move is expected to affect hundreds of motorists who regularly cross over the border for cheaper oil. Malaysia’s diesel and petrol prices are among the lowest in Asia due to high government subsidies. The ban is expected to affect up to 300 petrol stations in the country. And Singaporeans who hea...

Malaysia - Truly Asia - Truly Awesome!
2008-05-25 10:31:00
Good times in Kuala Lumpur. I have been here  teaching for Customware and on the weekend some of the team took me out to see the sights here. Malaysia is really interesting, they have 3 main racial groups here, Malays, Chinese and Indians and everyone goes about their day and often the common language used is English. This means its very easy for me to get around here on my own but I was lucky enough to be given a guided tour by Kay Nny and Yuen Chi. I told them I like to eat good food from everywhere Id go so they took me to all these small little eating places where I was the only white guy and ordered for me all this awesome local stuff. Some times I hesitate on "weird" food but for some reason I have been digging right into it here, I got stuck into everything they put in front of me and I didnt dislike any of it. The most awesome part was going for dinner with Kay Nny's family in place outside of town where they have their own fish farm and grow them yourself. O...

Pedra Branca belongs to Singapore!
2008-05-24 08:46:00
23 May 2008As a Singaporean, today marks an important day. The 28-year dispute over the Pedra Branca is resolved. Pedra Branca belongs to Singapore!Watching the International Court of Justice ruling live on Channel NewsAsia, I was paying close attention with ears wide to what the Judge was trying to read out from his script. It took about 2 hours before he finally announced that Pedra Branca belongs to Singapore; Middle Rocks go to Malaysia and South Ledge ownership would depend on the International Sea Boundaries. 12 judges agreed that Pedra Branca belongs to Singapore while 4 disagreed. In my opinion, the judge ruling on the matter displayed signs of diplomatic gestures. Singapore takes Pedra Branca while Malaysia takes Middle Rocks. The ICJ leaves both parties to work out on South Ledge. It seems like the most optimum "win-win" situation that could possibly work out. Professor Tommy Koh, ambassador-at-large, had previously mentioned that the ICJ should not worry about diplomatic c...
