Maliki “Mistranslated’, doesn’t support Obama ‘Plan
2008-07-20 10:52:00 (CNN) – A German magazine quoted Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki as saying that he backed a proposal by presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq within 16 months. “U.S. presidential candidate Barack Obama talks about 16 months,” he said in an interview with Der Spiegel that was released Saturday. “That, we think, would be the right time frame for a withdrawal, with the possibility of slight changes,” he said. But a spokesman for al-Maliki said his remarks “were misunderstood, mistranslated and not conveyed accurately.” Government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said the possibility of troop withdrawal was based on the continuance of security improvements, echoing statements that the White House made Friday after a meeting between al-Maliki and U.S. President Bush. So, in other words, what’s happened here is that Maliki is NOT backing Obama’s “plan”. Gee… I w...

TIME - "Has Maliki Conquered Sadr City?"
2008-05-22 00:09:00 From Time magazine:"Sa'ad Mutlieck was one resident of Sadr City heartened to see armored columns of Iraqi Army forces rolling deep into his neighborhood on Tuesday. "We hope the government is serious about ending all the armed groups so life could be back to normal," said Mutlieck. "The situation is very, very bad."'Odd; hadn't Maliki and Iraqi forces totally screwed up and lost (or not gained) Sadr City. I recall that was the line when Amb. Crocker and General Petraeus were in D. C.. It was Tet all over again right? Should Time be reporting this? I mean seriously, it didn't happen over night and doesn't that qualify it as a loss and old news that no one really cares about anyway?DeMediacratic Nation Blogrolls

Here we go again
2008-04-09 09:46:00 Iraq's Sadr threatens to scrap ceasefire | Reuters The Mehdi Army militia ceasefire had been credited with helping to sharply reduce violence across Iraq. Scrapping the truce could trigger widespread fighting with security forces and plunge Iraq back into a deadly spiral of sectarian violence. Sadr's warning came a day after Shi'ite Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki threatened to bar the cleric's movement from political life unless he disbanded the militia, which has fought fresh battles with Iraqi and U.S. forces in the past two weeksI hate to say I told you so, but...

Asking questions
2008-04-07 07:18:00 The Next Campaign Stop: Iraq Hearings - washingtonpost.com "Essentially, what we've seen both from the administration and from John McCain is a trumpeting of improvements from a horrific situation to simply a unsustainable and intolerable situation," Obama said. "It's looking at the entire picture that I think is the obligation of the president."I've tried to make this point on more than one occasion. Having made cease fire agreements with powerful Sunnis, a cease fire agreement with al-Sadr, and having pushed the surge strategy through to Iraq, our great success was pushing back the clock on violence to 2005. Since we managed that, and so far have not demonstrated we can sustain it, there has been little if any political progress made. In fact, Maliki has just finished waging a short, unsuccessful political war in Basra geared toward making himself look more favorable in elections, and reigniting some of the strife we had already contained. So the question that McCain is aski...

More on Basra
2008-04-01 09:29:00 Why al-Maliki attacked Basra | Salon The campaign was a predictable fiasco, another in a long line of strategic failures for the sickly and divided Iraqi government, which survives largely because it is propped up by the United States. So why did al-Maliki do it? With no obvious immediate crisis in Basra that called for such desperate measures, what could have motivated the decision to attack?I consider this article an interesting follow up on my statement about Basra yesterday. I think it's important to recognize the motivations behind Maliki's actions. Americans want to believe that, because the action was supported by the US and the UK, Maliki must have been doing something good for the country. Don't be fooled. Bush supported Maliki because Maliki supports Bush. Al-Sadr supports Iraqis. He may also support Iran, so I'm not necessarily a huge fan, but he claims to support a strong centralized power in an independent Iraq where American troops have gone home. I like th...

Now they've done it
2008-03-31 13:25:00 Al-Sadr calls off fighting, orders compliance with Iraqi security - CNN.com Death tolls are difficult to obtain, but reports from Iraqi and coalition authorities suggest more than 400 people have died since fighting began Tuesday. The fighting has been heaviest in Basra, Iraq's second-largest city and major oil port, and a U.S. military analysis of the battle indicated the government push was not going as well as American officials had hoped, several U.S. officials said Friday.Reading between the lines, what do we see. The US backed government started a fight with someone who had already signed a cease fire. Bush, of course, supported the fight, claiming it was proof that Iraq was returning to normal. After six days of intense fighting with hundreds killed the government has made almost no progress, and Al Sadr is making demands. The government hasn't indicated that they will meet the demands, but what happens either way? If Maliki does what he's been told, he basically is ...

al Maliki on political reconciliation and benchmarks
2007-11-07 16:34:00 Over the past week or so I've written about the supposed success of Bush's surge strategy. In reality the strategy to facilitate political reconciliation has largely failed, while the tactic of placing more troops between a civil war has been moderately successful. Wow! Who would have thought that? The U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) knows this and has said as much recently (.pdf):U.S. efforts lack strategies with clear purpose, scope, roles, and performance measures. The U.S. strategy for victory in Iraq partially identifies the agencies responsible for implementing key aspects of the strategy and does not fully address how the United States would integrate its goals with those of the Iraqis and the international community. U.S. efforts to develop Iraqi ministry capability lack an overall strategy... The weaknesses in U.S. strategic planning are compounded by the Iraqi government’s lack of integrated strategic planning in its critical energy sector. (p.2) ...T...

al-Maliki gives Washington the finger
2007-09-27 09:14:00 During his speech to the United Nations General Assembly, Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki warned some of his country's neighbors to stop funding and otherwise aiding insurgents in Iraq. The U.S. delegation must have been rubbing their hands together in anticipation. But if they thought al-Maliki was going to toe the Washington line and point the finger of guilt at Syria and Iran, then they were in for a bitter disappointment. And no little measure of embarrassment.Instead, al-Maliki fingered Saudi Arabia and Jordan, two prominent U.S. "allies" in the White House inspired War on Terror.Perhaps it was al-Maliki's way of thumbing his nose at Washington after the fiasco of the Blackwater affair.Apparently the Baghdad government has made repeated appeals to Riyadh and Amman to clamp down on what he's described as al-Qaida supporters in both of those countries. Odd, that we don't hear much criticism from Washington on this subject. The prime minister has been the target of much cri...

Blinking Democrats Miss Another News Bit...Or Did They?
2007-08-27 15:57:00 If the Democrats would stop trying to dodge bullets and failing miserably, they would have more time to keep up with current events. As some of them whine and demand that Maliki resign because he hasn't miraculously, in one years' time, to solve the political issues in Iraq, they certainly of either missed this one or have chosen to ignore it as a substantial occurrence.WSJ Online: A Fatwa Against ViolenceLast week, I participated in a three day meeting here that included six of the most senior Iraqi Sunni and Shia religious leaders. At the meeting, held at a Marriott hotel in a Cairo suburb, they formally agreed to "end terrorist violence, and to disband militia activity in order to build a civilized country and work within the framework of law." This gathering was a truly historic event, given the authority of the participants -- including Sheikh Ahmed al Kubaisi, acknowledged by all Iraqis as the senior Sunni religious authority (the weekly audience for his Friday sermons, bro...
Breaking News: Nouri Maliki Blasts Senators Hillary Clinton and Carl Levin
2007-08-27 02:59:00 Today Iraqi Prime Minister attacked Hillary Clinton and Carl Levin. Glad we heard this news after NBC decided to have Keith Olbermann pretend to be a real newsman. Thankfully the BBC does a better job at covering the untouchable Mrs. Bill Clinton and our election politics.Earlier this month, Hillary Clinton and Carl Levin thought it was appropriate to attack Iraqi's Prime Minister publicly during a war.Hillary Clinton said on August 22nd,"I share Senator Levin's hope that the Iraqi parliament will replace Prime Minister Maliki with a less divisive and more unifying figure when it returns in a few weeks."Well, Maliki would have none if it. He called out the disgraceful Senators by name. 2007-08-26 20:15:00 Throughout my years as a Red-Blooded White American Male, as I served this country we call the United States of America, in and out of the Armed Forces, I have always thought that the arrogance of our CONgressional Leaders has always been "Rather" out in left field. The audacity exhibited by American politicians to even dare criticize other governments when those governments don't quite meet American Standards is overly disingenuous to say the least. Case in point? The birthing of a Democracy-like government in Iraq. How can our Leftinistra even begin to honestly criticize the government of Iraq for not being quick enough to restore order in that country when our own Leftinistra spend most of their time, hopefully inadvertently, supporting and emboldening our enemies in Iraq? How long is it going to take to fix our Social Security issues that our CONgress has been working on for how many years now? That is merely one example and there are many.BAGHDAD - Iraq's Prime Minister Nou...

Intelligence Calls Iraq's Government Precarious
2007-08-25 08:36:00 The nation's intelligence director released a grim assessment of the progress in Iraq yesterday, including the prediction that Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki will be unable to broker reconciliation between the country's warring factions in the coming months and will instead become increasingly vulnerable to challenges to his own leadership. "The Iraqi government will become more precarious over the next six to 12 months," states an unclassified summary of key judgments in the report, citing growing criticism in Iraq of Maliki's rule. "Broadly accepted political compromises required for sustained security, long-term political progress, and economic developments are unlikely to emerge unless there is a fundamental shift." The National Intelligence Estimate report, an update of a similar assessment on Iraq released in January, highlighted some recent successes there since President Bush ordered an increase in the US troop presence. The estimate, compiled by the CIA and other intel...
