Malnutrition in eastern Indonesia 'higher than in Africa'
2008-05-23 09:12:00 Climate change has helped push malnutrition in the Indonesian half-island of West Timor to levels "higher than in Africa," aid group Church World Service said Friday.A survey of 4,800 households by the group found 61.1 percent of children under five in the region were stunted due to chronic malnutrition, while 13.1 percent of children were acutely malnourished."The prevalence of stunting and underweight children in West Timor is higher than in Africa," Julia Suryantan, the lead author of the report, told AFP.About 50 percent of West Timorese children -- out of a total population of up to two million -- were moderately or severely underweight, compared to a figure of 21.9 percent in Africa overall, according to the report."It's a complex situation in West Timor, they have a food security problem there and also limited access to health services," she said.Suryantan said the half-island in the country's east, which is drier than much of the tropical archipelago, was suffering as subs...
MALNUTRITION
2008-05-17 23:13:00 Although over-nutrition so characteristic of obesity could be considered a type of malnutrition, such diagnosis is usually reserved for the deficiency syndromes. In all parts of the world various deficiencies of vitamins, minerals, protein, or calories can be seen. Deficiencies are naturally more prevalent in countries where food supply is limited and poverty abounds. Careful analysisof food intake and any form of intemperance?such as manifested in alcohol consumption, bizarre food practices, food faddism, or the abuse of drugs? are productive to evaluate these conditions. Repeated closely spaced pregnancies and psychological disturbances manifested by a change in food intake should be assessed. Chronic infection, anorexia, or diarrhea likewise may profoundly affect the nutrient balance.Measurement of height and weight should never be omitted. These are the most commonly used measurements of growth in children and adolescents. Other body measurements include skin fold thickness, hea...
The Camp of Saints
2008-03-21 08:36:00 The latest death toll figures from Hurricane Katrina can be seen on this website here. The famous Russian neo-Nazi video is on this blog here. Updated March 24, 2008:A very nice, but somewhat dated (though the situation has probably only gotten worse), review of The Camp of Saints, one of the most hated books ever written. The link is on the execrable Free Republic, and the author of the review is a libertarian fool. Looks like Jean Raspail, the author of the book, was some kind of rightwing nut too. They both blame "socialism" for causing such horrible living conditions, along with starvation and mass and early death and disease, that afflict the Third World. This is truly bizarre. Even autarkic Albania nearly doubled life expectancy from 1946 to 1980, though it was not very successful in other ways.Almost all of the true Third World nightmare states are operating under some kind of capitalism, usually a particularly ferocious. That socialism is good for life can been seen in the fig...

Malnutrition
2007-11-20 09:59:00 Malnutrition is a general term for a medical condition caused by an improper or insufficient diet. It most often refers to undernutrition resulting from inadequate consumption, poor absorption, or excessive loss of nutrients, but the term can also encompass overnutrition, resulting from overeating or excessive intake of specific nutrients. An individual will experience malnutrition if the appropriate amount of, or quality of nutrients comprising a healthy diet are not consumed for an extended period of time. An extended period of malnutrition can result in starvation, disease, and infection.Malnutrition is the lack of sufficient nutrients to maintain healthy bodily functions and is typically associated with extreme poverty in economically developing countries. It is a common cause of reduced intelligence in parts of the world affected by famine.Malnutrition as the result of inappropriate dieting, overeating or the absence of a "balanced diet" is often observed in economically develo...

A Link Between Obesity and Malnutrition
2007-02-20 17:42:01 For an interesting post on the role of leucine (an essential amino acid) in metabolism, check out Isabella Mori’s Change Therapy. In particular, researchers at Penn State have uncovered a molecular switch that responds to changing levels of leucine in the diet, and may be involved in shifting metabolic responses. Isabella notes that this research is relevant to not just obesity, but also malnutrition and the starvation response - and so the protein, GCN2 eIF2alpha kinase, may be a potential drug target - but there are caveats as well. Read on at Change Therapy.

Protein-calorie Malnutrition
