Man United: Reds' past BPL wins

1992/93 FA Premier League Season Manchester United overcame a slow start to the season after the arrival of mercurial striker Eric Cantona. Cantona wasn?t the only player to make a name for himself though, a then 19-year-old Ryan Giggs retained the PFA Young Player of the Year award, while senior players like Paul Ince, Mark Hughes and Steve Bruce provided the experience. United finished ten points clear of Aston Villa at the top of the table and broke their 26-year barren spell. 1993/94 FA Premier League Season After a 2-1 win over the previous season?s runners up Aston Villa in August, United rose to the top of the table and stubbornly stayed there all season, finishing eight points clear of Blackburn Rovers. Eric Cantona was awarded the PFA Player of the Year, despite, at one point, being sent off twice in four days. Ryan Giggs, Paul Ince and Lee Sharpe continued to shine as United cruised to the double, with a 4-0 win over Chelsea at Wembley to clinch the FA Cup. The 1993/94 sea...
Man United: Fergie reveals double vision
2008-05-12 11:31:00
- Sir Alex Ferguson has set his sights on the second half of a glorious double after Manchester United retained their Barclays Premier League title. Goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and substitute Ryan Giggs secured a 2-0 victory against Wigan at the JJB Stadium. United finished two points ahead of Chelsea, who were held to a 1-1 draw by Bolton. Now England's top two will go head to head in the Champions League final in Moscow on May 21. Ferguson cannot wait for that date in Russia. "It would have been hard for us going to Moscow if we had lost out in the league," said the United manager. "While we know it will not be easy, we are relaxed now. There is a good feel about the team. "It is an exciting team and I enjoy watching them. They don't play with fear and that refreshes you." Ronaldo took his tally for the season to an astonishing 41 goals after making the breakthrough in the 33rd minute.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson heads into the Champions League quarter-final second leg against Roma on Wednesday with quiet confidence despite his side being held to a draw by Middlesbrough on Sunday. Ferguson believes the driving sleet and snow at the Riverside Stadium made the game a lottery as Afonso Alves scored a brace for the home side with Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney replying for United. He said: "We made two uncharacteristic mistakes in that game. "It was an unusual match because of the conditions. The surface was slippy and greasy and anything could have happened. "Both sides made mistakes and that had a lot to do with the elements." United hold a 2-0 advantage over Roma going into the second leg and look set to face Barcelona, 1-0 winners against Schalke in their opening match. Responding to a suggestion that his side are the form team in the Champions League, Ferguson was cautious.

The breathtaking form of Cristiano Ronaldo shows no sign of abating as Manchester United took two huge steps towards the Champions League semi-finals.Ronaldo made the breakthrough with his 36th goal of the campaign to leave Roma stunned. Then to heap more misery on the Italian title-chasers Wayne Rooney extended United's lead in the second half after a defensive mix-up in the six-yard box.It was a marvellous show of composure from United, who went into the match on the back of six straight Barclays Premier League wins.Given they had taken four points off Roma in the group stages this season, it was little surprise they approached this match with confidence. And although the Italians had a lot of possession in the

Title raceA stoppage-time own goal from Jlloyd Samuel snatched the points for Arsenal who had started the day in third place yet moved into second. However, Manchester United remain in charge of the title race after defeating Aston Villa FC 4-0 at Old Trafford in the Saturday evening kick-off. Chelsea FC, in third, host Middlesbrough FC on Sunday. Arsenal revivalArsne Wenger's men endured a miserable first half at the Reebok Stadium with two goals for Matthew Taylor sandwiching the 31st-minute sending-off of Arsenal midfielder Abou Diaby. Man United 3-0 Liverpool
2008-03-24 05:53:00
Manchester United strengthened their grip at the top of the Barclays Premier League after beating Liverpool 3-0 at home. While Arsenal sli yet another 3 points to lose the match against Chelsea despite of taking 1-0 lead. However, the talking point of this coming week will be the performance of referee Steve Bennett and Javier Mascherano's lack of control. Mascherano, already booked, was dismissed just before the break for blatant dissent which earned him a second yellow card - and then the red. The Argentinian had to be hauled from the pitch, such was his anger, and his boss Rafael Benitez was equally unhappy with the incident.Wes Brown had scored his first goal of the season - and only the third of his career - to give United control at the break, before Ronaldo and Nani netted inside the last 11 minutes as Liverpool tired. Now Manchester United extand their lead to 5 points over second position team Chelsea.

Attacking impetusA scoreless draw would have been sufficient for United yet the English champions know only one way to play and soon had Lyon on the back foot. The lively Anderson, given licence to roam ahead of Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher in midfield, released Ronaldo down the right with a superb crossfield ball and very nearly got on the end of the return pass. Lyon goalkeeper Grgory Coupet had told United's Patrice Evra that the French title-holders were only too conscious of the fate AS Roma suffered here when trying to play United at ...
