Managaha Morning
2008-10-25 04:57:00
I spent a much needed morning on Managaha Friday. I went swimming, saw some fish, took a nap and read on the beach.I also got in some tourist watching. My favorite was the fat Korean kid in a speedo.I love the way the Japanese and Korean tourists dress when they go to Managaha. Undoubtedly there will be a handful of people dressed like Darth Vader, covered from head to toe so as not to let any sunlight touch their skin. These tourists are usually found in the shade covered in a blanket.Amazing.Then, of course, you've got your Korean and Japanese bikini babes* taking pictures of one another.Chi-Zu!Jeff Turbitt's second best reason for living on Saipan was the Japanese Bikini Girls. Makes you wonder why he ever moved? Not a bad morning. I need to get out there more often.*bikini is one of the top search terms for people finding my blog. Shameless, yes. Effective, absolutely.

If you read the local papers, you'd think that all we do on Saipan is fret over the impending Federalization of our Immigration and Labor. Not so.We're still grilling food on the beach:Teachers from the Public School System are still learning how to apply coral reefs issues in their classrooms:Korean tourists at Managaha are still swimming in the No Swimming Zone:I'm still talking about watershed science and how our land management practices affect our marine environment:Jun is still singing Jason Mraz songs:...and Brad still dreams about his days on Brokeback Mountain:

During yesterday's field trip to Managaha, I had about 30 minutes to break away from the teachers to go snorkeling. I was exploring the wreckage right off the North shore of Managaha when I found this:Do you recognize that shell? If you remember a few weeks back, a few bloggers had a bit of a blog war over the species of crab, Dardanus megistos, that inhabits this type of shell. The common name is the White Spotted Hermit Crab. The shell is called a Triton Trumpet shell. Here is a photo of D. megistos taken from a previous crime scene (and stolen from an unnamed source):The shell was just sitting on the sand in about three feet of water. How cool is that? I picked it up and took a picture of it in my hand to show how big it was:I wonder what happened to the inhabitant of this shell? Why would he leave a perfectly good home like this one? Then I found this near the shell:The victim's head had been ripped off and stuffed between two small rocks near the site of his former home. Who co...
I'm moving!
2007-05-31 10:45:00
I signed a lease for a new apartment this afternoon. I'm going to move out of my place in Gualo Rai...well, right now. I'm pretty excited. The apartment is in a great location. I'll write all about it in a future blog.Yesterday I took the morning off to go to Managaha. Well, sort of. Even though I was technically off, I still took pictures of fish and coral. I shot some video, too.The fish at Managaha are amazing! There was a school of Bluefin Trevali circling around the snorkling tourists. They must have been about two feet long each. Now, we could kill those 8 fish and have one hell of a BBQ or we could charge 200 tourists $50 per day to go swimming with them. Which one do you think is better?
