Manchester United have gone seven points clear in the Premier League table after a 2-1 win over City rivals Manchester City, at Old Trafford. The Man United starting XI was: Van Der Sar, O'Shea, Vidic, Smalling, Evra, Nani, Fletcher, Scholes, Anderson, Giggs and Rooney. There was a glorious chance for Man City's David Silva only three minutes in after Ryan Giggs had played him onside but fortunately for United, he poked it just wide of the post. 10 minutes in Luis Nani came close to opening up the scoring, he cut in from the right but his strike on goal flew just over Joe Hart's bar. Just after the half hour mark there was some improvement in United's play with both Fletcher and Nani forcing saves out of Hart. After a big build up the Manchester derby was actually a rather boring affair. Sir Alex Ferguson had indicated that he had ?no idea? who he would be able to play tonight; it was surprisingly a strong side. The starting XI was- Edwin Van Der Sar, Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra, Rafael da Silva, Nemanja Vidic, Paul Scholes, Michael Carrick, Ji-Sung Park, Darren Fletcher, Luis Nani and Dimitar Berbatov. This weekend was a massive weekend for Man United. After last weeks dismal performance against Blackburn Rovers we needed to take three vital points from the game against Manchester City, to keep us in the title race. Anything less than three points and that would be our season over. If Tottenham Hotspur could take anything off Chelsea then that would be a massive bonus. United had the early kick-off against City at Eastlands, with only a minute remaining in the game, it looked like out season was over. That was until Paul Scholes turned up with a beautiful header two minutes into added time, which saw United leave with Eastlands with three points in the bag. We then had to wait until the evening kick-off to see if Tottenham could do us a favour and take some points against Chelsea at White Hart Lane. The Manchester derby finished in dramatic fashion and not for the first time this season. A Paul Scholes second half injury time goal was enough to see Man United take all three points and put some pressure on Chelsea. It was a must win game for both teams and I was expecting a fiery, passionate derby game but what we got was a dull game with not that many attempts at either goal. Man City made one change to the side, which saw Wayne Bridge come in from a five month lay off. Wayne Rooney and Ryan Giggs were both passed fit and were able to start but Rio Ferdinand didn?t even make the bench so Jonny Evans came into the side. After the loss to City today i knew either Sir Alex or Carlos Queiroz would blame it on something. Queiroz came out and blamed it on the international fixtures, so how come we played badly against Spurs and that was before the internationals?To be fair on Queiroz he did say that we cant blame it on that.We didnt deserve anything out of the match and i am starting to think that we might not get anything out of the FA Cup match next saturday against Arsenal.
