Red Cross plants mangrove trees
2008-02-20 08:28:00 Members of the Indonesian Red Cross planted a thousand mangrove trees at the Angke eco-park in North Jakarta on Tuesday as part of a tidal wave prevention campaign."Tidal waves could cause the kind of damage the city has never seen before. The Red Cross felt it was necessary to conduct a campaign to prepare for a tidal wave disaster," said Aulia Arriani, a member of the organization's public relations staff. She said tidal waves were a seasonal threat that could be predicted, making it possible to develop prevention and response strategies. In the past, coastal mangrove thickets helped protect the city from sea erosion, but development and pollution has cleared away most of the thickets.Indonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com-

World Wetlands Day: Children learn about importance of mangrove wetlands
2008-02-04 09:10:00 Sindi was immersed in her drawing of a mangrove forest at Muara Angke Wildlife Reserve in Pantai Indah Kapuk, North Jakarta."I hope I win the (drawing) competition," said the 11-year-old girl, one of 11 participants in the event held Saturday by wetlands volunteer-based organization Jakarta Green Monster to commemorate World Wetlands Day.She didn't win the drawing competition "Mangrove Forest is My Playground", but she learned wetlands protection had become more relevant these days after the flood that paralyzed much of Jakarta on Friday."I went through chaotic traffic and flooded roads to get here from Ragunan (South Jakarta)," Sindi said.Dozens of schoolchildren gathered at the reserve to take part in competitions such as garbage recycling, writing features about wildlife reservation, various games and a Kali Angke river tour. The preserved forest was established during the Dutch colonial period in 1939 and upgraded to a wildlife reserve in 1999.Although the area is the country's...
Report reveals 'alarming' rate of mangrove habitat loss
2008-02-01 15:44:00 Mangrove ecosystems should be better protected, the UN's food agency has warned as it published new figures showing that 20% of the world's mangrove area has been destroyed since 1980A study by the Rome-based Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) said that the environmental and economic damages caused by the "alarming" loss of mangroves in many countries should be urgently addressed.Countries must engage in more effective conservation and sustainable management of the world's mangroves and other wetland ecosystems, it warned, ahead of World Wetlands day tomorrow. The world has lost around 3.6m hectares (20%) of mangroves since 1980, the report showed. The total mangrove area has declined from 18.8m ha (46.4m acres) in 1980 to 15.2m ha (37.5m acres) in 2005. However the report did show that there has been a slowdown in the rate of mangrove loss: from some 187,000 ha destroyed annually in the 1980s to 102,000 ha a year between 2000 and 2005. This reflected an increased awareness of...
Mangroves Help Indonesia Fend Off Climate Change
2007-12-07 03:07:00 Dark, foul-smelling mangrove swamps can help Indonesia's coastal communities fend off rising seas and stronger tropical storms caused by climate change, experts say.As 190 nations meet for Dec. 3-14 UN climate talks on the resort island of Bali, looking for ways to broaden a pact to slow down global warming, experts say mangroves are not getting the attention they deserve as a protective coastal barrier."Mangroves are a natural way to lessen the severity of the impact (of climate change) to coastal communities," said urban planning and climate change expert Enda Atmawidjaja."They are natural sea barriers, and they are also much cheaper then building sea walls made of concrete."Indonesia, a sprawling archipelago of 17,000 islands, is extremely vulnerable to a rise in sea levels, storm surges or more intense tropical storms linked to global warming.Indonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com-

Durian or Mangrove Research
2007-10-24 11:41:00 I'd especially like to see botanists get involved in these studies. The work could proceed along several lines. Some of our past student scholarship recipients have used fairly simple equipment, I believe Sony NightShot cameras with IR light sources, to monitor flowers fairly close up to document exactly what critters visit them and how they do it, showing that some are basically "thieves" as opposed to truepollinators. Also, exclusion experiments are likely appropriate. We need to document what happens if flowers are not pollinated, versus if they are visited by only certain pollinators. My anecdotal observations indicate that bats will contribute the lion's share of successful pollination, and it is my understanding that these flowers cannot set fruit without pollinators. Such experiments have been designed many times for pollination studies. They just apparently have not been done on durians or Old World mangroves. Obviously, we need some work done where appropriate bat visitor...
Indonesia home to 60 percent of world`s mangrove forests
2007-09-04 14:22:00 Indonesia is currently home to 1.8 million hectares of tropical mangrove forests or about 60 percent of the world`s reserve, a nature conservation activist said. Rasyid Assaf Dongoran, director of the Amanah Nature Conservation Foundation (Akasia), said here on Monday that 2.9 million hectares of Indonesia`s mangrove forests were located in Papua province, 195,000 hectares in South Sumatra and 150,000 hectares in East Kalimantan. He said mangroves played a role in maintaining ecological balance which was very useful for human life. Mangrove forests also protect the ecosystem and serve as the habitat for fish and shrimp to feed, breed and develop.Indonesia News Blog: http://indosnesos.blogspot.com-

Using Mangroves As A Filtration Method
2007-07-06 00:11:00 Using mangroves as a type of filtration in a salt water system was started by Julian Sprung several years ago. He planted a mangrove into one of his aquariums just to see what would happen and to his surprise it actually started to grow and flourish. An article was produced by Julian Sprung detailing the benefits of utilising mangroves in an aquarium and many aquarists started to utilise mangroves as an additional form of nutrient export. Mangroves can be grown in various areas of the marine aquarium system. They can be grown in the sump, the refugium, the mud bed, a separate designated aquarium or even in the display aquarium if you so wish.

Mangrove forests could have reduced tsunami deaths
2007-06-16 03:11:00 The death toll in the tsunami catastrophe that devastated the coastal area of Indonesia's Sumatra Island in December 2004 could have been halved if natural mangrove forests had not been flattened by development, according to studies by a group of researchers led by Tohoku Gakuin University Prof. Toyohiko Miyagi. The study is the first quantitative analysis of the effect of mangrove forests in alleviating tsunami damage. The findings were reported Friday at the 21st Pacific Science Congress being held in Ginowan, Okinawa Prefecture. Morphologist Miyagi and others spent three years studying the height of the tsunami, damage inflicted and distribution of mangrove trees on the devastated area of the island. A wide area of mangrove forests was destroyed to accommodate ponds to farm shrimp. The northern Sumatra area of Banda Aceh, on which devastating damage was inflicted by the 10-meter-high tsunami, mangrove forests amounting to 1,145 hectares, or about 88 percent of such forests a...

"I started crying when I saw the mangrove tree"
2006-08-21 11:54:02 by Dr. Resurreccion Sadaba, Mangrove-Specialist from the University of the Philippines ©Greenpeace/Heike Dierbach When I heard about the sunken tanker on the radio I instantly feared for the marine reserve in Guimaras we are taking care of. I rang up my collegues to put a team together. I was espacially worried about one mangrove tree from the species rhizophoro lamanckii. It is a very rare species, there is only this single tree on the whole island! I have been taking care of it for years, it is really my baby. When I arrived here my worst fears turned reality: My mangrove tree was covered with oil. I started crying when I saw it. |
