Manhattan Libertarian PartyManhattan Libertarian Convention – SUCCESS!Published on January 22nd, 2012 by AdamThe Manhattan Libertarian Party was a great success yesterday on the 21st!Not only did we have over 60 attendees and over a dozen new members, but the featured speakers were amazing.  Jim Babb of We Won’t Fly kicked off the meeting with a speech about how the TSA is a great example of state force followed by Carl Oberg of FEE who spoke of the living a principled life for liberty.Candidates running to be the Presidential Candidate on the Libertarian ticket, were (as appear in the photo from left to right) Gary Johnson, Carl Person, RJ Harris, and Bill Still.  They each gave brief statements of why they’d be the best candidate for liberty in 2012 and then fielded an array of questions ranging from their thoughts on Ron Paul to their management style, plans for drumming up extra media attention, immigration and beyond! At the end of the event, Gary ...
Midtown Manhattan Magic at Bann Restaurant
2012-01-09 05:10:00
Most restaurants can get at least one thing right - that signature dish, five dollar happy hour drinks, or even a special molten chocolate dessert. Unfortunately, not too many get it all right. I have found an exception straddling the border between midtown and Hells Kitchen (350 W. 50th Street) in New York City. Enter ...

OWS Turns Lower Manhattan Into a Mosque

Oh look, it’s feeding time at the zoo…wait.  Oops.  It’s just prayer time.  My bad. Yeah, because that has everything to do with “economic instability and corporate greed. ...

Iced Green Tea Lemonade (and else) at the Tea Exchange in Manhattan Beach,
2011-07-12 23:58:00
SeeTheGlobe.com Travel Article :: The Tea Exchange has had its storefront in Manhattan Beach Metlox Plaza for many a month now. When you walk, bike or walk into downtown via Manhattan Beach Blvd you cannot miss it. It blends nicely into the entire modern look and feel of this mall. Competition for coffee and tea dollars is quite fierce in this part of town (many other shops within minutes) so one has to be really really good to survive. I have visited The Tea Exchange several times in the past few weeks and here is my verdict.Rate and Review : Iced Green Tea Lemonade (and else) at the Tea Exchange in Manhattan Beach, CA
DePaul legend Rashon Burno hired on as Manhattan College assistant
2011-05-20 02:34:00
The Rashon Burno story is a long and inspiring one -- most DePaul fans know the important details. As detailed in this 1996 story, before Burno was recruited by former DePaul head coach Pat Kennedy in 2001, he experienced the death of his mother and then his grandmother, who was raising him, before he even reached his teens.Burno played high school ball for the legendary Bob Hurley Sr., leading St. Anthony's to three New Jersey state titles in three years as a starter. Director Kevin Shaw made a documentary featuring Hurley titled The Street Stops Here. Released in 2010, Burno is interviewed in the film.In four seasons with the Blue Demons Burno started at guard in 58 games, was a team...

Manhattan Institute Confirms Michigan's $60 Billion Pension Nightmare
2010-04-21 16:34:00
The true scope of Michigan’s unfunded teacher pension (MPSERS) disaster has been verified by Josh Barro and Stuart Buck. The two researchers examined fifty-nine state run teacher pension plans and have quantified the massive underreporting of pension liabilities. While recent losses in market values contribute to the problem, the authors focus on the aggressive assumptions buried deep in the financial footnotes. The authors conclude that the assumptions employed by pension funds conceal the magnitude of the funding problem. It is a problem which falls squarely on the shoulders of taxpayers, students, and teachers. Their analysis highlights the deeply flawed and misleading pension reporting of the MPSERS Audit. The numbers for Michigan are sobering, but are consistent with what I have been writing about for years. From their report (page 16 of Civic Report No. 61), Michigan discloses an unfunded pension liability of $8.9 billion. The realistic* unfunded pension liability is ...

Why I?m Leery of the Manhattan Declaration
2009-11-30 15:15:00
Someone recently asked me what I thought of the Manhattan Declaration.  For those who don’t know, the declaration I’m referring to links Catholics, Greek Orthodox, and Protestants together under the banner “Christian” to stand for life and traditional marriage in our culture.  It’s an attempt to stick together as Christians in our opposition to these ...
"The Manhattan Declaration"
2009-11-27 08:36:00
Joe Carter (First Things) - What is "The Manhattan Declaration"?:The Manhattan Declaration is a 4,732-word statement signed by a movement of Orthodox, Catholic and evangelical Christian leaders who are collaborating around moral issues of great concern. Its signers affirm the sanctity of human life, marriage as defined by the union of one man and one woman, and religious liberty and freedom of conscience. The Manhattan Declaration endorses civil disobedience under certain circumstances. You can read the document here; you can append your signature here. Related The "Manhattan Declaration": The Manifesto That's Shaking America, by Sandro Magister (Chiesa). "It's been endorsed by Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox leaders, united in defending life and the family. With the White House in the crosshairs. In Europe, they would've branded it political "interference" by the Church."
Lunch at Simmzy's Pub in Manhattan Beach, California

SeeTheGlobe.com Travel Article :: Walking through the streets of downtown Manhattan Beach is a favorite pastime of ours. The area has a nice beachy upscale feeling and some of our favorite coffee shops, eateries and such. When new establishments come to town we check them out as soon as we can. One such place we observed is Simmzy's Pub, a relative newcomer. I remember this space housing a Japanese restaurant not long ago. We noticed crowds every time we passed by Simmzy's and that only increased our wish to visit it in the near future. We had lunch there last week and here is the verdict.Rate and Review : Lunch at Simmzy's Pub in Manhattan Beach, California

2009-04-08 05:23:00
A former stockbroker in New York City, Peacock Alley founder Mary Ella Gabler is regarded by many as the first to establish the luxury linen industry in the United States. Mary Ella believed that women sought to decorate their bed and bathrooms in the same luxurious colors and prints that they dressed themselves in and over a quarter of a century later, her classic patterns and color palettes are still perennial favorites. Spiraling Skyscraper Farms for a Future Manhattan
2009-02-17 09:59:00
As the world’s population continues to skyrocket and cities strain under the increased demand for resources, skyscraper farms offer an inspired approach towards creating sustainable vertical density. One of three finalists in this year’s Evolo Skyscraper Competition Eric Vergne’s Dystopian Farm project envisions a future New York City interspersed with elegantly spiraling biomorphic structures that will harness cutting-edge technology to provide the city with its own self-sustaining food source. If we consider the future needs of our cities, few urban designs address the world’s burgeoning population better than vertical farms. It is a known fact that by 2050 nearly 80% of the world’s population will reside in urban centers, and 109 hectares of arable land will be needed to feed them. These organic structures you see in pictures abowe will harness systems such as airoponic watering, nutrient technology and controlled lighting and CO2 levels to meet the food demands of futur...

The Elusive Manhattan Apartment
2008-06-03 04:01:00
The apartment search ends.I guess that statement would pack a little more punch if I had blogged about the apartment hunt when it started. Four weeks, a dozen apartment viewings, hundreds of hours on craigslist, many real estate LOLs, a decision 2-weeks into the hunt to enlist a roommate, three brokers, two applications, and a shitload of money upfront later, Tasha (Natasha S.) and I signed a lease on an apartment in Hell's Kitchen. Our pros to doubling the security deposit and paying both first and last months' rent outweighed the cons of continuing the search and drowning in the summer rush of recent college graduates arriving in the city.Over drinks in an adorable bar a few blocks from our potential new spot, we made a list to aid our hasty decision; however, we knew we had to act fast if we didn't want yet another available apartment to slip through our fingers.Pros- The majority of available units below $2500/month in midtown are very small for two people, who aren't a coupl...

Manhattan Transfer
2008-05-28 13:29:00
Page Six: Are James Dolan and his Madison Square Garden minions capable of vengeance? That's what pals of Tom Brokaw are saying over the treatment of his friend, hedge fund manager Ralph Schlosstein, who had been paying the Garden for two of Brokaw's four Knicks season tickets for the last 10 years. The retired NBC anchor was being interviewed on XM Satellite Radio in April when he announced, "I won't renew because I don't like the attitude that the ownership has brought to the community. They have failed their obligation to the city . . . The Garden has lost a lot of its luster." When Schlosstein recently inquired about "his" two seats, he was told he was out of luck. "There's a waiting list for those tickets," a Garden rep told Page Six. "The policy is, you can't transfer tickets." Brokaw and Schlosstein wouldn't comment. But a friend of both men said, "The Garden is being incredibly childish. Because Tom said those things, they want to kill anyone connected to him." Attent...
A line forms in Manhattan
2008-05-22 22:20:00
It’s beginning to look a lot like…Soviet Russia. According to some of Engadget’s informants, a line has formed at the 24/7 Fifth Avenue Apple Store in New York City. The purpose of the line? Nobody quite seems sure. Apple reps apparently say that they’re controlling the crowd of iPhone purchasers, while some people in the line appear to be under the impression that they’ve lined up for the as-of-yet-nonexistent 3G iPhone. Reputedly, yet another group of people says that they just like joining lines. Okay, I’ve spent my fair share of time in lines for all sorts of things—but always with a purpose, be it the iPhone, or The Phantom Menace. Never have I joined a line just for the hell of it. Maybe on my next vacation. Copyright Mac Publishing LLC. This RSS feed is for personal non-commercial use only. Manhattan loft inventory / setting a base line of 745
2008-05-19 15:17:00
half-hearted (half-assed?) no more I always knew it would be interesting to know how many lofts are for sale in Manhattan -- something that nobody tracks (that I am aware of). My earlier efforts to track this were quick, simple ... and wrong, as it took 4 times getting the same wrong number (and a final hint from Reader Larry) to realize that my first efforts were bumping up against a search-result-limit in the form of inter-firm data base we use. (See thehistory from March 30 new Manhattan loft listings + closed sales + inventory in last 7 days and May 4.) So I broke down the current inventory search into manageable bites that match my New Listings and Closed Sales reports, probably resulting in even more useful information. Here are the numbers, followed by a brief explanation. Number of Manhattan lofts offered for sale as of Sunday night: price range # of lofts ...
