Manic Monday #54 - Quake
2008-04-22 02:54:00
It was the 1989 World Series and I had tickets. It was the third game and I decided not to go. That was October 17, 1989. The day that just about every baseball fan was sitting in front of the television watching the Battle of the Bay - the Oakland Athletics and the San Franciso Giants. It was also the day that the Loma Prieta earthquake struck. A magnitude 6.9 earthquake. I was in the valley, but it was so frightening I ran outside for fear the house would collapse. It was the strongest most horrific earthquake I've ever experienced, and I've experienced many. Although there were many heartbreaking events that took place I am only going to discuss two. These are the two that affected me the most. I was glued to the television for days as all the channels were covering the quakes aftermath. I remember seeing the video of the span of the Bay Bridge that collapsed and it showed a vehicle driving into thin air. The news channels played that same video over and over. The driver of tha...

Oh, wait! It's Tuesday! *sigh*What does one do when one has an entire "day off" to play with?If you're crazy like I am, you do this:1. Make a huge batch of curried butternut squash soup2. Keep an eye on the next batch of maple syrup while Hubby is doing farm chores3. Do Turbo Jam4. Mop floors5. Vacuum entire house6. Compost in the garden7. Clean dining room8. Clean living room9. Clean games room10. Clean guest room11. Clean greenhouse12. Groom Chance (that dog is crazy looking! He's got burrs in his thick coat! Arrrgh!)13. Cat litter14. Make supper15. Manic Monday #52 - 1000

There are a 1000 things about the California Delta that I love. There are a 1000 miles of waterways from Stockton and Sacramento all the way to the Golden Gate Bridge and out into the Pacific Ocean. There are a 1000 or more tales of its history, its beauty, its residents, along with a 1000 fishing stories. All the shots in my slideshow are things I've actually seen while traveling by boat on the Delta. I haven't been in every single body of water in the Delta, but I've been from Stockton, Sacramento and all the way to the San Francisco bay by boat. I cannot tell you how wonderful it is to boat the 1000 miles of waterway that is called the California Delta. The Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta is an example of an inverted river delta, one of only a few worldwide. The fan-shaped area of the delta converges downstream, rather than diverging, as the two rivers are forced to exit the Central Valley through the Coast Range via the narrow channel known as the Carquinez Strait, which le...
Manic Monday #51 - Egg
2008-03-24 00:26:00
The 1895 Rosebud Egg is made of vericolored gold, translucent red and opaque white enamal, diamonds and cream velvet lining. The Rosebud is made of gold and opaque green and yellow enamel. The missing surprises, inside the rosebud, were a crown, made of gold, with diamonds and rubies, and the missing pendant was a cabochon Ruby. This Louis XVI-style Egg is covered with translucent red enamal on a wave-patterned guilloche field, quartered by lines of rose-cut diamonds and is surmounted by a miniature of Nicholas II beneath a portrait diamond, encircled by rose-cut diamonds. The year, 1894 is set in the base beneath a diamond. The egg opens to reveal a hinged yellow rosebud, another symbol of the couple's love for one another. The bud in turn originally contained two tiny surprises, a miniature replica of the Imperial crown, representing Alexandra's new life as the Empress of Russia, and a ruby Egg pendant hanging within it. Like the almost identical crown and pendant of the First I...

Manic Monday #50 - Drink
2008-03-17 01:44:00
Mo of It's A Blog Eat Blog World has chosen the word drink for this weeks Manic Monday. Since St. Patrick's Day and drink go together I thought I would talk about my green weekend and drinks. My long absence was because our yacht club always celebrates St. Patrick's Day. This year we went to Tower Park Marina for the weekend. Tower Park has a great bar and there were many drinks; green martinis, green beer, and green lemon drops to name a few. I never saw so many green drinks in my entire life. I spent part of the day Saturday watching Offshore boats come into the marina so they could partake of all the green drinks. Most were dressed in green and and after spending about 2.5 hours drinking all the green drinks, I was a bit worried about them leaving. Let's just say they were pretty drunk. It was scary. Have a great St. Patrick's Day and remember, don't drink and drive. Oh, and this is what they served for dinner last night. Yummy.

You find that your best friend has stolen money to pay for medical treatment for a seriously ill relative. What would you do?  I'm not too good with this kind of hypothetical questions. My brain says 'a theft is a theft, and he broke the law' and my heart says 'how can you even think of such a crazy scenario'?. So I will go with "I don't know" for this one.   What three things you regret not learning to do? Play guitar. Play piano. Study to be a journalist or a radio host. Do you know why there is no question #3 this week? Nope. Honestly. No idea.   Manic Monday

How did you celebrate your last birthday? Very quietly, actually. It fell on a Wednesday, so Gaby was teaching that evening; I took the kids and my mother-in-law to Benny's for dinner. Nothing compared to my 40th birthday bash last year! What's the last thing you bought yourself, just for fun? I believe that would be the blue tooth headset I bought for my cell phone. I accept it, it's really useful when I have to attend teleconferences while I'm driving (and that's been happening a lot!), but it was mostly for two reasons: To pretend that I'm cool, at least in my mind. To put it on whenever Gaby is around, and pretend I have been wearing it all day, because she hates that thing! :-) What would the child you once were think of the adult you have become? I think he would be amazed, because I never thought I would accomplish anything important as an adult. And look at me now! Manic Monday

What do you order when you eat Chinese food? Now this is a question I like! :-)   There's a Chinese restaurant next to where I work (Ming's), and the food there is just excellent. I used to go there very often (like 3 times a week), to the point that the lady would recognize my voice when I made my order by phone.   Even now, that I'm not going there more than once or twice per month, she still knows that I want a combo #6 (fried rice, Hunan beef and chicken balls) with no vegetables and no sweet and sour sauce.   Whenever I order Chinese food somewhere else, I go with the same kind of dishes: rice, chicken balls, Hunan or Szechwan beef or chicken, and if possible, breaded shrimp.   Not that I order all of those at the same time! Well, sometimes I actually have. :-)   How much have you controlled the course your life has taken? Very much. Just read my story...   Whose opinion do you value when deciding how to vote? Mine only. I will discuss ...

What is the most romantic movie that you've ever seen? That would definitely be "Always", with Richard Dreyfuss, Holly Hunter and John Goodman (directed by Steven Spielberg). Only movie that has ever brought tears to my eyes. I loved the movie, especially since it features one of my favourite tunes of all times, "Smoke gets in your eyes". Distant second, "Ghost" with Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore. If you could be the lover of any person alive other than your current lover, who would you pick?I can honestly say "nobody but my wife", but just in the spirit of the meme I will go with one of the actresses I find very attractive; so my answer will be Jennifer Aniston. She's crazy for me as well, you know, but I have told her I'm happily married; that I was very sorry, but she couldn't even compete. The Brad Pitt/Vince Vaugh thing is just a big cover up designed by her press agent...What scents remind you of a loved one?The smell of jasmine reminds me of my wife, same as the smell of "...

Manic Monday #44 - Blue
2008-02-04 00:55:00
This week Morgen of It's A Blog Eat Blog World has chosen the word blue. Then I heard Rhapsody in Blue and knew what blue meant to me this week.Rhapsody in Blue is a musical composition by George Gershwin for solo piano and jazz band written in 1924, which combines elements of classical music with jazz-influenced effects. The composition was orchestrated by Ferde Grofé three times, in 1924, in 1926, and finally in 1942. The piece received its premiere in a concert entitled An Experiment in Modern Music, which was held on 12 February 1924, in Aeolian Hall, New York, by Paul Whiteman and his band with Gershwin playing the piano. The version for piano and symphony, orchestrated by Ferde Grofé in 1942, has become one of the most popular American concert works. Source: Wikipedia So enjoy George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue with Leonard Bernstein as pianist at Royal Albert Hall (London) in 1976.I see you! Don't forget to leave a comment and have a great day. :)

If you could have a servant come to your house every day for one hour, what would you have them do?I think the chore that I would like some help would be mopping and cleaning the window grills. That takes up time. Of course it doesn't need to be done daily. Another thing is, cooking, I suppose. I can't cook. That can be done daily within one hour. Has your life ever been changed by an apparently random occurrence? When I read this question, I am only thinking about people who might had an accident or being at the wrong place at the wrong time like at the scene of a crime or a shoot out. But no, nothing like that happened in my life. You're having dinner with several friends and acquaintances. They all criticize a close friend of yours (not knowing he/she is a friend). The criticism is unjustified. What would you do?I will defend my friend.

Monday was... interesting. Actually, the bulk of the day was fairly normal for a Monday. Then, at exactly 7:00pm ? right as my final class of the day was beginning ? the power went out. Not just to The London School, but to the entire city block in which the school is located. All the teachers wandered downstairs, wondering what the protocol might be for such a situation, only to be handed candles inside little plastic cups, and sent back to class. As you know, all of my classes are fairly low-level, and this class was Elementary 4. We?re currently studying the present perfect. After asking as many ?Have you ever...? questions I could think of, I then began asking every low-level question I could think of. (We couldn?t really hold class by the dim light of a candle, and I couldn?t find my stellar headlamp flashlight.) Eighty minutes of basic questions was a bit much, but luckily my last class of the day is filled with hilarious, good natured people. It might not have been the best l...
