Manny Ramirez Has Extra Incentive
2008-02-02 11:14:00 Manny Ramirez had a lot to say yesterday. As a player who doesn't speak to the media much, it's a story when he does. Manny said he wants to be like Julio Franco and play until he's 48. His more immediate concern, however, is convincing the Red Sox to exercise his $20MM club option for 2009. I could be wrong but I don't see a buyout attached to that. So Manny has to prove that he's worthy of a one-year, $20MM contract. Ramirez has a new workout program and vows to be at Spring Training on time. If he has a vintage Manny 1.000 OPS year, the Red Sox will have to exercise their option. And then they get the same situation all over again with a $20MM club option for 2010. Even another "off year" for Ramirez, similar to his .296/.388/.493 performance in '07, would make the '09 option a tough choice. Baseball Prospectus' newly released PECOTA projections have him posting a .281/.381/.486 line in '08.
