Manufactured Landscapes
2008-05-05 23:48:00 Manufactured LandscapesPlotPhotographer Edward Burtynsky travels the world observing changes in landscapes due to industrial work and manufacturing.ReviewEdward Burtynsky photographs the impact humanity has made on the landscape. He claims to have no agenda and simply wants people to witness the terrible beauty of industrialisation and draw their own conclusion whether their consumer goods are worth this much ecological damage. However, as she proves in the stunning opening tracking shot, documentarist Jennifer Baichwal isn?t quite so passive. Yet there are moments when Burtynsky and Baichwal indulge in eco porn, as they capture soulless workplaces across China with a dismayed wonder that contrasts starkly with the celebratory montages of the Constructivists of Soviet Russia. VerdictA beautiful-looking documentary that would have benefitted from a more passive stance.Source: EmpireOnline

Manufactured Landscapes...

see china through manufactured landscapes
2007-08-14 05:58:00 The great Core 77 has a chat with photographer Edward Burtynsky and the film maker Jennifer Baichwal who made Manufactured Landscapes, the film about Burynsky's work and his recent trip to China. There is no film that quite captures the contemporary scale of China like Manufactured Landscapes. The challenge of capturing a photographer known for his large scale works and blending it into a film narrative is difficult, but in this case, it's really nicely put together. If you want to see what's happening in China, Manufactured Landscapes takes you inside one of the biggest human transformations in history. The film shows Burtynsky pushing himself and his Chinese handlers to get the shots that tell the story and it's a story of Old China being pushed aside for New China. What's also remarkable is quite how low-tech everything is; this is a human powered revolution. The film shows China's labor advantage, so much so, that mundane tasks done by machines in the West, are done by peopl...

Manufactured Landscapes 2006
2007-03-08 10:19:01 MANUFACTURED LANDSCAPES is a feature length documentary on the world and work of renowned artist Edward Burtynsky. Burtynsky makes large-scale photographs of ?manufactured landscapes? ? quarries, recycling yards, factories, mines, dams. He photographs civilization?s materials and debris, but in a way people describe as ?stunning? or ?beautiful,? and so raises all kinds of questions about ethics and aesthetics without trying to easily answer them. The film follows Burtynsky to China as he travels the country photographing the evidence and effects of that country?s massive industrial revolution. Sites such as the Three Gorges Dam, which is bigger by 50% than any other dam in the world and displaced over a million people, factory floors over a kilometre long, and the breathtaking scale of Shanghai?s urban renewal are subjects for his lens and our motion picture camera. Shot in Super-16mm film, Manufactured Landscapes extends the narrative streams of Burtynsky?s photographs, allowing us...
