Great Site On Ethnic Groups In China
2008-11-19 22:28:00
From the Chinese government. That isn't really the homepage; I can't find the homepage, so just click to the left on any ethnic groups you want to read about.Lists all of the official minorities, with a good anthropological background for them, along with a good history, a bit about the language, customs, religious beliefs, culture, etc., then onto recent history. The history and recent history is written according to Marxist economic analysis, and shows how the coming of the Chinese Revolution really did improve things for many minorities. I've been scared to read the part about the Tibetans and Uighurs.I'm sure in the case of Tibet it will talk about how the revolution ended feudalism (yes, there was real feudalism in Tibet) in Tibet and made life better for most Tibetans. One thing no one tells you about the Free Tibet crowd was that the Dalai Lama presided over a particularly horrible modern form of feudalism, complete with castes and out and out slavery. The site does provide...
The Left Opposition In China
2008-11-15 12:58:00
Here in the West, we don't get to hear much about the Left opposition inside China, or better yet, inside the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). For all the MSM tells us, it may as well not even exist. So this document, from an Old Guard CCP member who is a member of the Left Opposition in the party, is interesting. What do they want? What are their beefs with the present regime? I really don't have time to analyze this document now, so I will just throw it out there and let you all go at it.His critique of the present regime is trenchant, though. This is a classic Marxist document full of typical Marxist language, though, so for those who can't handle such things, you might want to forgo reading it.I'm not taking a position on the Left opposition in the party right now except to say that they raise some interesting critiques about the present day party. I'm curious about what sort of economic outcomes the Left's project would result in.Recall that under Mao, China had economic man...

Sendero Stages Deadliest Attack in 10 Years
2008-10-12 05:38:00
Updated October 13:On Thursday night, October 9, 2008, Shining Path guerrillas attacked a Peruvian military column as it sounded a bend in Tintaypunco, in the Tayacava Province in Huancavelica Department. The attack left 13 soldiers and 2 civilians dead (earlier reports of 12 soldiers and 7 civilians killed were wrong) and 11 others wounded (8 soldiers and 3 civilians). The civilians were being transported by the military convoy. The convoy was returning to the Cochabamba Grande military base when it was hit.A typical road in the Vrae region. Not much, is it? The convoy was probably traveling on a road like this when it was hit.Sendero attacked the convoy of four trucks with a roadside bomb first, then followed up with automatic weapons fire. The result was a battle that lasted for hours. Vizcatán is in the far northwest corner of Ayacucho Province, in the La Mar District. The previous day, Sendero attacked a military vehicle in Vizcatán, killing 1 soldier. So far, the offensive has ki...
Chinese Communism: The Gift of Life and Health
2008-09-08 00:31:00
The success of Chinese Communism, particularly in terms of health care:Between 1952 and 1982 [with most of the change happening before 1976], China reduced the rate of infant mortality from 250 to 40 deaths per 1000 live births, decreased the prevalence of malaria from 5.5 percent to 0.3 percent of the population, and increased life expectancy from 35 to 68 years (Hsiao et al 1996).In 1949, under the Nationalist Chinese so beloved by Americans, fully 20% (!) of all Chinese babies died in their first year of life, an incredible statistic (Sidel & Sidel 1973). By 1976, when Mao died, the rate was down to 46 out of 1000 (Yu and Sarri 1976). Infant mortality had plummeted by 77% in only 27 years, probably one of the fastest declines in world history.During the Cultural Revolution, Mao instituted the Barefoot Doctors program, serving the health care needs of 90% of the population (Hsiao et al 1996). It was hailed by the UN as one of the greatest public health programs of all time. Co...
Support For South Ossetion Succession
2008-08-10 09:01:00
A good progressive principle, but one subject to some exceptions, is the principle of self-determination. This leads naturally to support for most if not all separatist movements. In my case, I do support most, but not all separatist movements. It's interesting of all the people around the world, that only leftwingers and various seceding nationalities support this principle. It's also interesting that once nations secede and become their own state, suddenly they do not believe in the right to secede anymore! We on the Left have always upheld this basic principle. The USSR held that all Russian nationalities had the right to secede. Unfortunately, it was not enforced much, but it was this very principle that allowed Gorbachev to permit the various USSR republics the right of secession in 1991. At that time, on at least that one variable, the USSR was the most civilized nation on Earth. Its civilized nature was a direct result of the progressive principles that were embodied in the US...
Red Revolution For Bangladesh
2008-04-21 12:13:00
Bangladesh seriously needs revolution. Thank God the Maoists have taken up arms there to overthrow the system. They have not done too well, they are completely insane, and the Islamists have united against them, but we must wish them well. After all, only the Maoists are fighting to get rid of the system, the system that kills so many.Reasons.Electricity is scarce and most do not have access to clean water. Roads are in terrible shape and agriculture is lagging far behind where it ought to be.In other words, it is a total capitalist South Asian clusterfuck. Get rid of it.Even more reasons.1/3 of rural Bangladeshis are landless (for contrast, 50% of Central American rural ppl are landless). All land reforms since independence have failed.Truth is, if you are landless in Bangladesh, I would wager that you are probably starving. The land question is clearly the heart of the matter here. If someone disagrees that giving these folks land will keep them from starving, please speak up in t...
Another Communist Failure: Cartoons
2008-04-02 10:09:00
The first part of this introduction will be written in standard anti-Communist crap boilerplate of the sort that you read in the US press, magazines and books, see on US TV and hear on US radio.According to this line, Communism totally failed at everything it ever tried to do! Amazing. There was not one single area of life in which the Communists did not fail, not one. The failure was so immense and all-encompassing that one wonders how any Communist countries lasted even a year. Furthermore, Communist societies were rife with horrible poverty and the people were always starving, year and year out.And those who were not starving were being systematically murdered in the worst genocides ever known to man. Never mind that most Communist societies eliminated hunger far quicker and better than most or all comparable non-Communist societies.Never mind that Communist societies set world records for doubling life expectancy in the shortest period of time. Never mind, according to the lates...
George Habash, a Revolutionary Life
2008-02-18 09:38:00
The latest death toll figures from Hurricane Katrina can be seen on this website here. The famous Russian neo-Nazi video is on this blog here.Updated February 19, 2008:The following tribute to George Habash, leader of the Palestinian Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) was delivered to a meeting organized by the CPGB-ML in Central London on Saturday 10 February 2008. The Communist Party Great Britain Marxist-Leninist, basically a hardline pro-Stalin group, last time I checked. This document is interesting for various reasons. For one, it shows that hardline Communist rhetoric in the style of the former USSR is still popular. The PFLP are lauded for being a hardline Marxist-Leninist organization. It's hard to say whether they still are or not, as they seem to be downplaying this in recent years, and no one really knows what Communism even means anymore. It is true that there was a Communist state in South Yemen, but I am not sure if they accomplished much down there.O...

The latest death toll figures from Hurricane Katrina can be seen on this website here. The hard to find Russian neo-Nazi beheading video taking the net by storm is on this blog here.Updated September 15:I am going to reprint the article below in its entirety, as I do not think a link should suffice.90% of all computer jobs in the US are going to H-1B visa holders. Social Imperialism and Maoism
2007-04-15 05:05:00
The latest death toll figures from Hurricane Katrina can be seen on this website here.Maoism is the Communist theory that holds that the words and deeds of Chairman Mao in China built upon previous Communists and at the moment, this is the highest form of Communist development. There are some Maoist movements in the world today - a huge one in the Philippines called the New People's Army, one in Nepal that has just laid down its arms and is participating in the political system and a large movement in India. There is also a very small movement in Turkey and a largely defeated movement in Peru, the Shining Path. Of these, the Shining Path was the most militant and extreme. There is also a significant Maoist movement in Bangladesh. This blog supports the movements in Philippines, India and Nepal. Our reasons for supporting the Nepalese revolutionaries are given here. Our reasons for supporting the Indian and Philippine revolutionaries are complex and are best made the subject of anot...
Web 2.0 as Digital Maoism
2007-03-23 08:33:00
I suppose it didn't help when I turned down all the urgent emails and messages to join the various Digging Mobs. But, I'm glad I did. One of my biggest thrills in life is observing culture and stuff. I'm a strange girl.Anyway, you can't always observe things clearly if you are a part of it. That is the old forest for the trees deal. The Internet is hugely important. What is not important are many of the self-important people on it. And those people can no more assess what cyberspace is about, than they can write a blog that is intelligible to a person that is not immersed in the Internet 80% of the time.Web 2.0 is important because many of its adherents believe reality will become a mirror of hyperreality. I have mentioned several times this is not going to happen. But, the problem is the process, not the final result. It’s like communism. The ultimate reality of communism was quite nice, and quite impossible. The suffering arose when there were attempts to actually implement i...
