Retro Friday: Honolulu Marathon 1999
2011-12-02 09:00:00
Here is a photo of Colleen and I at the half-way point of the 1999 Honolulu Marathon. We finished in 6 hours, 40 minutes, having done a lot of walking and waiting in port-a-potty lines along the route. Six weeks previously, I had run my first marathon at home in Victoria. I think it took me less than 5 hours. The Honolulu race is a slow one for most people because of a number of factors: You are sharing the course with 40,000 other runners, many of these runners are Japanese and have never run before, and the pack never thins out, so you are constantly surrounded by people. It began at 5 a.m. in the dark, with fireworks announcing the start. In 1999, marathon day weather was awful. It rained almost the whole time. That's why we were waiting in the port-a-potty lines so much; we had over-hydrated, expecting a long, sweaty, tropical run. We got our medals, celebrated with goofy cocktails, then spent the next few days playing on the beaches to help our muscles recover. And neithe...

2011-06-17 19:19:00
Friday's Public Affairs-Rod Blagojevich marathon features four consecutive episodes of the TV show, "Public Affair with Jeff Berkowitz," focusing on the federal Chicago retrial of former Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich,  54.  The case went to the jury (eleven women - including three minority jurors and one man) last Friday. The  jurors, after deliberating for five days, are taking a three day weekend and will resume their efforts to reach a  unanimous decision on the 20 count indictment on Monday at 9:00 am.   Blago was convicted last summer in his first trial by the Feds  of "lying to the FBI."   The jury was hung on the remaining 23 counts of the indictment, both as to Rod and as to those counts involving his...

"We have so much time, and so little to do - strike that! Reverse it." - Willy Wonka ALSO what's going on in my head on a gorgeous Sunday morning: I'm ENDURING. I'm doing stuff that I never thought I'd be able to do. I'm running a freaking ½ marathon next weekend. For someone with repeated upper respiratory infections and was told growing up that I was "too weak to play the flute" I'm doing this. I'm RUNNING. I started running, OUTSIDE, BY MYSELF in October, 2010. That was HUGE for me. I was so scared at first. I was so afraid of the ex-husband coming around, being by myself, without Max for protection. But he didn't and I just...

The Doctor Is In ? Dr. Who Marathon and Premier on BBC America (Trailer)
2011-04-23 04:25:00
He?s baaack! Yes, our favorite Time Lord from the Planet Gallifrey returns with an all new season on BBC America Saturday night. Leading up to the premier, the network will be running a Dr. Who marathon all day long. The world’s longest running science fiction TV series is back with more space-time travel adventures, with actor Matt Smith playing the 11th Doctor for another season. Yes, there have been eleven Doctors, more if you count Peter Cushing and others, including Hugh Grant, who played the kooky Time Lord in movies and TV specials. But as far as the TV series goes, there have been eleven since 1963, for each time the Doctor dies, he regenerates into a new form, with a new personality. Matt Smith plays The Doctor as BBC America airs the season premier of Dr. Who following an all-day marathon of last season?s episodes. Chicago Marathon Registration
2011-01-19 03:09:00
Chicago Marathon registration opens February 1st. Registration for the 2011 Chicago Marathon opens on Tuesday February 1st.  It is hard to believe that registration opens 8 months before the running of the marathon.  Some people are expecting the marathon to fill up in record time this year.  So you need to decide soon if you are going to "Run Chicago" this year.  Training doesn't begin until June.  So you are probably wondering what you can do during the 4 months between registering for the marathon and beginning training. If you sign up to Run With Heart you can begin your fund raising.  Making a commitment in February for a race in October give you a lot of time to forget...
Chicago Marathon 2011 - Will You Run?
2011-01-19 01:44:00
It is official, the 2011 race season is approaching.Today, emails went out to runners notifying them that registration for the 2011 Chicago Marathon will open on February 1st.  However this year the cost of entry is $145 as opposed to last year's $135.  No reasoning was provided for the price increase.Again, the marathon will take place in early October (the 9th) and is capped at a total of 45,000 participants.  One important note about the date of the event, this year the marathon falls on the day following Yom Kippur.  For those unaware, this is a holy day in the Jewish faith and is observed by a 25 hour period of fasting, which could be an issue for anyone who...
Marathon Missfit and Accidentally Sexy Make a Video
2011-01-17 15:00:00
Every gal loves the idea of fame and fortune. Accidentally Sexy (Ana) and I love all that, and the idea of free booze. So when Stephen Markley posted the Publish This Book: One Beer You Tube Contest, we were all for it. What does this have to do with running? Mmm, not much. But if I stretch and think, I have two ideas: 1. This book is really, really good. Almost Marathon Missfit blog good. So you should buy it and read it when you are racking up miles on the treadmill. 2. There is a great scene in the book that takes place along the lake running path, so if you've never ran but would like to pretend you have, read...
Jewish Runners Forced to Make Decision in 2011 Chicago Marathon.
2011-01-04 16:05:00
Fasting and marathon running usually don't go hand in hand, however this year as Jewish runners get ready for the big day on October 9th, it's a decision they may have to make.Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement and the holiest day on the Jewish calendar is the day before the marathon, which means instead of carbing up for the race, Jewish athletes may be fasting, no water or food for a 25 hour period, and observant runners will only be able to break the fast the night before the marathon."To Jewish runners, you're forcing a choice," said mortgage broker Barry Stoltze, who has run the Chicago marathon four times. "Either sacrifice your running and don't do the marathon...

Why Jared Is Running The New York Marathon
2010-10-25 07:08:00
Hey, we're not trying to start rumors or anything, but how feasible does this sound? I think we should all just accept this as fact.Side note, Jared always has the same damn smile on his face in every picture. I would have preferred to make him look a little angrier, but those photos just don't exist. It was a minor miracle that I came up with the perturbed face in the final panel.Second side note. Is wearing a pair of gigantic jeans affixed to my person with a belt and going as Jared, who has woken up one day and forgot that he lost all the weight, a good Halloween costume? As a follow-up question, am I kind of a...
Marathon Recovery Week 2 to 16- Cross Train
2010-10-15 22:41:00
So you are approaching the 7th day after the marathon.  Hopefully your body is feeling less stiff and your aches and pains are disappearing.  Whether you are going to prepare for the Las Vegas or Honolulu Marathons in December, or simply just take the winter off from running - you should be thinking about how to rebuild muscle, improve flexibility and regain joint stability.   But if you are going to do this - find a fun activity that is dynamic, cross training that accomplishes everything for your body.Martial arts is one of the most balanced sports - I say this because it trains both sides of the body equally, involves static and dynamic flexibility, its movement require balance training...
