Watching my first marathon
2009-10-16 03:52:00 I had never been to watch the marathoners run the annual Chicago Marathon. This year I decided to head out and support my friend Catherine and the rest of the runners. I woke up on Sunday morning and waited for a friend to pick me up. Unfortunately, we didn't plan very well, because the streets were blocked and they could not get to me to pick me up. So I hopped in a cab and bypassed all the traffic. I was not going to miss seeing my friend Catherine. Catherine had set this goal to run the marathon months ago. She began training with the National Aids Marathon Training Group and raised money to support the...
What Did I Get Myself Into- My Marathon Story.
2009-10-14 03:47:00 Warning- It is never a smart idea to try and run a marathon with only two weeks of training. The first guy to run a marathon died. Do not try this at home. I am a child and I think we established that I have no common sense at all. What did I get myself into? That's what I was thinking as I stood in the back of the pack waiting to start the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Two short weeks before the marathon, I announced to the city (or 12 readers of this blog) that I was going to run with the slowest runners in Chicago, to experience their journey. The problem is, the slow runners had trained for the...

We have photos, video, tweets - everything - including the amazing shot you see above. Well, almost everything. I kept hoping someone would send in a photo of spaghetti and garlic bread. Chicago Marathon 2009: You came, you saw, you ran
2009-10-11 21:33:00 Political statement or cold-weather gear? Were you running in the 2009 Chicago Marathon? Were you one of those guys with no shirt on? I bundled up and stepped over to 18th Street and Blue Island when the 4:15 pack was coming through and have to admit your willingness to train for months and brave the early winter temps inspired this desk jockey to consider jumping in next year. Super trooper Amy Guth made it to mile 14, WITH A CANE, before calling it a day. If any of you took her advice on finish line photos, we'd love to see them. Wanjiru ready for World record assault - Chicago Marathon preview
2009-10-10 22:57:00 Jim Ferstle IAAF When asked what was the most memorable about his 20 year tenure at the helm of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon, executive race director Carey Pinkowski answered the three World records that have been set on the flat, fast course through the neighborhoods of Chicago. On Sunday's 33rd running of the event, weather permitting, there may be a fourth record to add to those memories. The Bank of America Chicago Marathon is an IAAF Gold Label Road Race.Beijing Olympic champion Sammy Wanjiru demonstrated in that race in 2008 that he is capable of lowering Haile Gebrselassie's 2:03:59 mark and two other Chicago entrants, Morocco's Abderrahim Goumri and Kenya's Vincent Kipruto, whose personal bests, like Wanjiru, are also...
Chicago marathon: how to get a kick-ass finish line photo
2009-10-09 13:30:00 Don't, whatever you do:Don't look down, even though you're going to be so ready to just be finished already. Don't mess around with your watch check your time the second you are crossing the finish line. Don't obscure your bib number with your arms (or by hunching over) if you can help it. Don't drag your feet, even though they might feel like cinder blocks by mile 26.2. Don't make the "kill me now" face. Don't get so excited with your accomplishment that you whack others runners with wild arms. Don't, whatever you do, do not cross the finish line with a cartwheel or by walking on your hands- your timing chip might not connect with the finish line sensor...

And, here at ChicagoNow, we're looking out for you. We don't want you to be that guy. Or gal.Which guy? Nike Chicago Marathon merchandise, not just for marathoners
2009-10-08 00:26:00 This year Nike has created an amazing line of merchandise in honor of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Many of these products are specifically designed for the individuals running in the race (and of course runners in general). Yet, this year's merchandise is so creatively designed that it can be worn by anyone in Chicago. I have expressed my love for this city numerous times before, and I am definitely going to purchase some of the marathon apparel. I think you will fall in love with it as much as I have. When meeting with Cindy, the NIKE PR rep for Chicago, she explained that this year's Chicago Marathon theme was built around, "the race's unique spirit and storied...
Getting Ready for the Chicago Marathon with Nike
2009-10-07 22:51:00 We are about 3 and a half days away from one of the biggest events in Chicago. Thousands and thousands of people will come to our city and participate in one of the most physically challenging events in existence. Most of these individuals have trained for months in order to finish the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. For some, this is not their first marathon. These experienced marathoners know the importance of having the right clothing and equipment in order to successfully complete the marathon. To help out the new marathon runners and update the old, I met with the Nike PR Rep in Chicago to learn what clothing and equipment Nike has to offer our marathoners. Here is some...

And the marathon got me thinking about spaghetti and garlic bread. And social media, of course. So how can we combine all of those elements and make for a fun social media project? Easy. Pictures, video, Twitter and Facebook. Here's what I'd love to see, and these are just examples:...
How to eat before the Chicago half marathon
2009-09-12 20:40:00 About 20,000 people will be headed to our great city of Chicago tomorrow for the Chicago Half Marathon. This 13.1 mile race gives runners the opportunity to prepare for marathons coming up while enjoying the view from Lake Shore Drive. For those of you entered in tomorrow's race I hope that you have prepared your body well, both physically and nutritionally. Many racers wonder if they should carbo load the night before the event. Most runners these days have forgotten the notion of eating heapfuls of pasta the night before. Many experts suggest that you do not eat anything that will bother your digestive tract the night before. So if you're not used to an overly large meal of pasta...
Asthma and marathon training updates
2009-09-11 15:40:00 It’s generally been a rough couple of months on the asthma front. This disease has been kicking my butt. Seems like Ive been sick more often than not. A couple weeks ago I started flaring again pretty severely, and as a result, had to up my prednisone to 50mg for a few days. The prednisone did it’s job this time and kept me out of the hospital, but weaning back down was really tough. I always have a difficult time tapering down below 25mg…. my peak flows bottom out and my symptoms come back with a vengeance. I probably wean too fast, but I know my body, and I would rather risk rebounding and breath crumby for a few days, then to stay on the higher doses and suffer the side effect of the prednisone itself. A few weeks back I had a sleep study and echo-cardiogram done to see if they might shed some light on why I’ve been having such a difficult time with my breathing at night. I’m short of breath pretty much 24/7, but more recently , especially in ...

The not so glamorous side of being a severely asthmatic marathon walker.
2009-06-01 20:15:00 Yeah, I made it to Boston , Ive walked the Rome and Portland marathons a couple times, and yeah Ive been written up in lots of walk magazines and medical journals, but I think a lot of people who hear about me or read my blog, assume that because Ive done all these things, that I lead an exciting life and that my asthma is well controlled and more of a nuisance than anything else. What they don’t see, and what I rarely write about unless I’m really sick, is the hell I go though on a daily basis when I’m not doing all these fun things. Most days start out pretty good with my best breathing occurring during the morning hours , but that effect rarely extends into the afternoon. Generally ,as the day progresses, so does my breathlessness. If I eat even a small meal for lunch or dinner, the bloating that results, only adds to my breathing discomfort. By early evening I’m usually so short of breath , that I will have to take neb treatments every hour or two un...

All the hype that you hear about the Boston marathon is absolutely true. There is simply no other marathon like it on the planet. This was absolutely the best marathon experience Ive ever had! Laguna Phuket International Marathon 2008
2008-06-08 09:24:00 A scenic route along some of Phuket’s most spectacular west coast bays makes this an event that attracts runners ready to achieve a personal best. Some marathons shine brighter than others in this highly competitive field of events. The Laguna Phuket International Marathon is one of them, due its incredibly scenic route along some of the island’s best beaches and on roads that wind through shady rubber plantations. Now in its third year, the marathon will attract as many a 1,500 runners from 40 countries, who will complete in a variety of events, 15 June, including the 42 km marathon, a half marathon, a 10.5 km and 5 km walk. Of course, the fun starts on the evening of the 14 June when runners meet for the traditional pasta party, a carbo loading exercise to prepare them for the demanding races on the following morning. Laguna Phuket’s chef conjures up a mammoth buffet at the hotel, the official headquarters for the event, while Thai musicians and dancers e... |
