TunesDay: Ooh la la
2008-04-29 18:17:00 One of my favorite musical sub-genres is sort of an off-shoot of trip-hop, a sultry urban electropop district where the downbeat influence of Portishead meets up with all kinds of interesting characters dressed like David Bowie in the ’70s. California pure pop a la Burt Bacharach, for instance, which we find in the likes of Saint Etienne (and the solo work of singer Sarah Cracknell), Mono and Hooverphonic. These groups are almost always fronted by female vocalists, and every year or two I trip across another one that just blows me away. In 2002 it was Frou Frou, and in 2005 the duo’s singer, Imogen Heap, knocked us out with the brilliant Speak for Yourself. Black Box Recorder did two or three must-have CDs and singer Sarah Nixey’s solo debut last year was one of my Gold LP winners. Hooverphonic has a great new release out this year that will likely be in the Gold LP category, as well. Then there’s our band of the week, Goldfrapp, a British outfit fronted by s...
Short Takes - Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Phil Spector, Marc Bolan
2008-02-19 08:19:00 Paul McCartney and Heather Mills could not come to an agreement on their divorce settlement after six days in court, so a High Court judge will make the decision for them. At stake is a portion of McCartney's $1.6 billion fortune.McCartney didn't attend the last day of the hearings so that he could rehearse for the Brit Awards.Van Morrison has been signed to kick off this year's South-by-Southwest Convention on March 12. He will be previewing songs from his new album, Keep it Simple. The BBC is reporting that a piece of paperwork has come to light that shows that peace activist John Lennon may very well have been a member of the Air Training Corps (ATC) as a teenager. The membership card was found amongst files saved during a 70's fire at Speke Airport in Liverpool. Beatles experts are very excited by the find and are trying to authenticate it.Peter Gabriel, Boy George, Squeeze and Eddy Grant have all signed on for this summer's U.K. WOMAD festival, taking place July 25 to 27 ...
Rock & Roll Feature: Marc Bolan Is the Electric Warrior of T-Rex
2008-02-02 07:01:00 This is the fifteenth in a series of Rock & Roll features I’m writing for this site. I’m a rock and roller, so this column is a way for me to feature a different album that I like, from different genres every month. When it comes to one hit wonders, sometimes that one hit really is that group’s most interesting work. Other times though, the label of one hit wonder is completely based on context. I live in the States and have all my life, and here T-Rex wasn’t much more than a one hit wonder, the hit being “Bang a Gong (Get it On)”. For some reason it took me years to get over that label even though it was purely a USA thing, the band was huge in England. Just a few months ago finally checking out the band’s catalog . I was so impressed by their music and convinced that they are much more than a one hit wonder that I wrote a piece about their progression from folk to proto punk for the Soul of Rock ‘n’ Roll. You can read that pi...
Remembring Marc Bolan
2007-09-14 06:12:00 30th anniversary of the death of the talented musician and friend of EltonSunday, September 16, marks the 30th anniversary of the sudden death of Elton's friend Marc Bolan, killed in a car crash in London, and still much missed.Marc emerged in the late 1960s with the underground group Tyrannosaurus Rex, and then went on to 'heavy up' his guitar and spearhead the British glam-rock movement with T.Rex. His classic hits include "Ride A White Swan," "Hot Love," "Get It On," "Metal Guru," "Jeepster," "Telegram Sam" and "I Love To Boogie."Elton and Marc were friends - even though T.Rex's "Metal Guru" prevented Elton's "Rocket Man" from reaching the UK No. 1 slot in May 1972. Quite recently Elton and the Band performed Bolan's "Children of the Revolution" at the 2005 Live 8 Festival. Our picture shows Marc Bolan sitting on Elton's piano for an acoustic duet. *ource(and location of mentionned picture): Elton John's website*
