About 10,000 revellers and a further 400,000 rainbow flag-waving onlookers answered the critics and doomsayers who, in the lead-up to the parade, claimed Mardi Gras had lost its way. Led by veterans of the first Mardi Gras, the '78ers, Saturday night's parade contained many politically-themed entries alongside the more colourful, crazy and outrageous ones. They were followed by members of the original 1978 march before gay and lesbian life savers began dancing up the parade route alongside a fire truck, a small yacht and several moving dance floors.Among the 150 floats are a number of political groups, including same sex equality activists and political party. But for many people here the extravagant costumes and an array of loud brightly coloured floats are all part of a very large party. Here are a few updates:Last week, I went to see Interpol at the Hordern Pavillion with a group of former coworkers from Leo Burnett. I think this was my 7th time seeing them and once again, they did not disappoint. It was my first time at Hordern which is a medium size concert hall on the grounds of Fox Studios. The complex also has real movie studios (Matrix, Mission Impossible 2), cinemas, a shopping mall, and offices. The sound of the show was pretty crap but things improved once we moved back. Thumbs up for Interpol. Next I have two nights with Sinead O?Connor and a Smashing Pumpkins show at the end of March.I have been playing lots of tennis with some rather varied results. My partner Glenn and I signed up for another Thursday night comp and we easily won our first match against one of our big rivals. New Mardi Gras are set to reissue an unspecified number of tickets, which were issued on consignment and are being returned.Details regarding the number of tickets and when they will be available are yet to be released, but the news of extra tickets going on sale will be received well by partygoers, many of whom missed out due to unprecedented demand. I decided to kick off the premier Fight the Frump week by updating on the Mardi Gras ball that I set out to lose 20lbs for and get back into that 2 sizes too small ball gown. While I didn’t lose 20lbs, I did manage to lose a little bit, and between that and a hell of a lot of spandex, I did indeed get back into the dress. Barely. And it took a safety pin to make sure the zipper didn’t pop open. As Tim Gunn would say, “Make it work!”, and I did. I was a little self-conscious about how tight the gown was, right until I got there.
