Biofuel is killing the Gulf of Mexico
2008-04-02 13:24:00 A huge boost in corn production from US govt ethanol mandates has sent record amounts of nitrogen fertilizer down the Mississippi River and into the Gulf of Mexico. Once in the Gulf, the nitrogen breeds oxygen-eating algae that blossom on the water?s surface, depriving creatures of their lifeline. More nitrogen means even deader zones in ...
Giant marine life found in Antarctica
2008-03-28 06:48:00 Scientists who conducted the most comprehensive survey to date of New Zealand's Antarctic waters were surprised by the size of some specimens found, including jellyfish with 12-foot tentacles and 2-foot-wide starfish. A 2,000-mile journey through the Ross Sea that ended Thursday has also potentially turned up several new species, including as many as eight new mollusks. It's "exciting when you come across a new species," said Chris Jones, a fisheries scientist at the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. "All the fish people go nuts about that — but you have to take it with a grain of salt."The finds must still be reviewed by experts to determine if they are in fact new, said Stu Hanchet, a fisheries scientist at New Zealand's National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research. But beyond the discovery of new species, scientists said the survey, the most comprehensive to date in the Ross Sea, turned up other surprises.Hanchet singled out the discovery of "fields...

Bottom trawling devastation is visible from space
2008-02-26 19:27:00 Bottom trawling for fish stirs up billowing plumes of sediment that can be seen from space and destroys entire sea floor eco- systems, new imagery reveals. The technique, used all over the world, is a way to catch fish in deeper parts of the ocean with huge, deep nets, now that many near-shore fish populations have ...

Marine Life In The News
2007-12-04 06:08:00 There has been much marine life in the news in recent weeks. Japan is undertaking a new whale hunt for ”research.” It will be the first so-called legal hunt of Humpback Whales since 1963. Theoretically, the number of Humpbacks is now high enough to sustain a hunt. It seems a restored population is in fact bad ...
Acid Oceans From Carbon Dioxide Will Endanger One Third Of Marine Life
2007-10-22 08:05:00 Acid Oceans From Carbon Dioxide Will Endanger One Third Of Marine Life, Scientists PredictThe world's oceans are becoming more acid, with potentially devastating consequences for corals and the marine organisms that build reefs and provide much of the Earth's breathable oxygen. The acidity is caused by the gradual buildup of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere, dissolving into the oceans. Scientists fear it could be lethal for animals with chalky skeletons which make up more than a third of the planet's marine life."Recent research into corals using boron isotopes indicates the ocean has become about one third of a pH unit more acid over the past fifty years. This is still early days for the research, and the trend is not uniform, but it certainly looks as if marine acidity is building up," says Professor Malcolm McCulloch of CoECRS and the Australian National University."It appears this acidification is now taking place over decades, rather than centuries as originally predict...
New Species Discovered by Qatar Natural History Group
2007-09-15 14:18:00 According to this article by Francis Gillespie in the Gulf Times, what is probably an entirely new marine species has been discovered by members of the Natural History Group. The tiny scarlet and white sea slug, measuring only 3 cm long, was found by Gabriele Patterson in a Mangrove Swamp in Sumaisma in East Qatar during an April trip. The sea slug, which has yet to be named, is similar to a specimen documented over a 100 years ago in Pakistan, but which has not been seen since.Qatar Camel RacingQatar Heritage VillageQatar Visitor e-store (U.S.)Qatar Visitor E-store (U.K.)Find the best deal, compare prices and read what other travellers have to say about QatarTagsQatar Doha Middle East Natural History Marine Life

Ocean Park Head Curator Refutes Accusation Of Abuse Of Marine Life Making T
2007-08-08 00:39:00 Addressed to Bajan Reporter blog: It was with no small measure of surprise and disbelief that I read your article “Barbadian Marine Habitat Under Fire….”I am the Head Curator at Ocean Park. I have worked for the last 14 years in Public Aquariums around the world and am a qualified marine biologist. Public aquariums are a powerful tool in the fight to conserve marine life and to educate the public, acting as centers for research and conservation. In the two years since opening, more than 20,000 local students have visited Ocean Park to learn about the island’s natural marine heritage. The readers of Bajan Reporter might reasonably ask why they have been confronted with an apparent litany of damning accusations about Ocean Park. I will address these accusations below before discussing the motive. (more…)
