Blanton to Phillies Deal Hurts M?s
2008-07-17 18:52:00
The Philadelphia Phillies overpaid for Joe Blanton today, hurting our Seattle Mariners. 1.) Billy Beane continues to build his Oakland A’s into a future dynasty from within, this trade following other trades of his that brought in truckloads of top-tiered talent (Rich Harden, Nick Swisher, Dan Haren, etc).  2.) Seattle will no longer be able to coax ...

Lesbian kisses: Mariners need to chill out
2008-06-08 18:01:00
It's common to see straight couples making out just about anywhere you care to mention - parks, movie theaters, restaurants and yes, even ... perhaps especially ... ballparks. Rarely does officialdom intervene to issue a warning or a reprimand. In fact, some ballparks even feature "kiss cam" when couples kissing in the ballpark are beamed up on the big JumboTron screens so everyone can enjoy the spectacle. When gay or lesbian couples kiss in public the reaction can be dramatically different, as we know from the numbers of "kissing incidents" that have made the news. A lesbian teen was kicked off a bus in Oregon when a passenger complained that she was kissing a female friend. Four women were asked to leave a restaurant in Kansas City because two of them were spotted kissing. So it comes as no surprise that when Sirbrina Guerrero kissed her woman friend at Safeco Field during a Mariners game someone got upset. Seattle's reputation for being gay friendly didn't hold up on this one. An...
Seattle Knuckles Under To Wakefield and Boston...Red Sox 11 Mariners 3
2008-06-08 11:59:00
Knuckleballer Tim Wakefield led his Boston Red Sox team to a resounding 11-3 stomping of the Seattle Mariners, and he was flat out brilliant. At one point he retired 12 Mariners in a row. He allowed five hits, but only three of them were longer than 25 feet. Wakes said he was staying back longer during his delivery, and that helps his control as his knuckleballs dart and zoom and dance THROUGH the strike zone. One of his strikeouts victims was Kenji Johjima, and the pitch was eerily reminicent of the famous "eephus" pitch, a pitch thrown so slowly it almost looks like a slo-mo instant reply. The pitch was beautifully slow and the whiff was real. Wakes went seven innings, and the bullpen polished off the west coasters. Craig Hansen continued to show a biting slider and a good fastball and breezed through the eighth. Jonathon Papelbon, summoned to pitch the ninth just to give him some work, allowed one run during a 23 pitch ninth. And then, suddenly, it was over and almost time to wat...

Lesbian kiss at Seattle ballpark stirs up gay-friendly town
2008-06-05 17:18:00
The Associated Press Thu, Jun 5, 2008 Most of the time, a kiss is just a kiss in the stands at Seattle Mariners games. The crowd hardly even pays attention when fans smooch. But then last week, a lesbian complained that an usher at Safeco Field asked her to stop kissing her date because it was making another fan uncomfortable. The incident has exploded on local TV, on talk radio and in the
"Kiss Cam" Almost Gets Lesbians Kicked Out of Mariners Game

We?ve all been to sporting events and venues who in the down time of the action decides to put their little cute "Kiss Cam" to work up on the JumboTron. They scan the crowd for couples who then smooch to the roar (or apathy) of the assembled masses. Because of that, I've always assumed that

Fastballs that flew past Boston’s flailing bats. Curves sharp enough to break the will of the Red Sox. Then, diving cut fastballs and tricky changeups. Colon Wins Again. It's Safe At Safeco For Boston...Red Sox 5 Mariners 3

"Is it safe?" That's the question Sir Lawrence Olivier asked Dustin Hoffman in the thrilling movie MARATHON MAN. Rent it!! Please!!! The late, great Roy Scheider costars with Olivier and Hoffman. And the answer, at least for the Boston Red Sox, is a resoundingly loud YES! They were treated as if THEY were the home team in a thrilling comeback 5-3 victory. They scored four runs in the eighth inning to make a winner of Bartolo Colon. who is 2-0 and is proving himself to be just what the baseball doctor ordered. He was able to go seven strong, giving up only one lonely run on five measly hits. He walked one and struck out four and was in command from his first pitch to his last. And remember this, my friends, he's only going to get better. I'll say it again...HE'S ONLY GOING TO GET BETTER! What an acquisition by Theo & company!!The Sox were tied with Seattle 1-1 after seven innings before they made something happen against Felix Hernandez, who pitched so well. They scored four runs...

Mariners getting little production from designated hitters
2008-05-20 14:18:00
The job qualifications couldn't be any more straightforward. Hit. That's all the designated hitter is required to do in the American League. No throwing. No catching. No running other than the pesky 90 feet between bases. A team can pick any player for that spot without regard for his defensive abilities, and yet that position has the worst batting average of any position in the Mariners lineup this season. Seattle's designated hitters have batted a cumulative .193, slightly worse than the .199 that Mariners first basemen are hitting. Seattle began the season with switch-hitting Jose Vidro as the designated hitter, then shelved him behind prospect Jeff Clement a few weeks ago. That trial run stopped with Clement's demotion to the minor leagues Sunday, and manager John McLaren said the Mariners will go back to Vidro at that position for today's game in Detroit."He's here basically for his bat, so we're going to try and get that going," McLaren said. These are lean times for the...

Mariners dreadful start could mean trouble for McLaren
2008-05-15 13:00:00
The Seattle Mariners have the worst record in the major leagues. Are they the worst team in the major leagues? Probably not, but the Mariners have more problems than they can solve by completing a rumored trade to bring prodigal son Ken Griffey Jr. back from the Cincinnati Reds. Griffey is batting .250 with four home runs, nothing special, but disturbingly better than these batters in the Mariners' lineup Tuesday: Kenji Johjima (.228), Miguel Cairo (.154), Wladimir Balentien (.224) and Jeff Clement (.150). And that was with Richie Sexson (.202) suspended, Jose Vidro (.193) benched and Brad Wilkerson (.232) released.Yet, the Mariners have bigger problems, for a team playing in Safeco Field should prosper with pitching and defense. The Mariners' ERA ranks 12th in the AL, ahead of only the Texas Rangers and Detroit Tigers. The Mariners made four errors Tuesday, and they rank next to last in errors. The combination of losses and sloppiness could lead to the firing of John McLaren, a l...
Mariners Edge Rangers In 12-Inning Series Finale, 4-3
2008-05-15 10:25:00
A large percentage of the time in baseball (and perhaps life in general), the difference between success and failure is as much about what you didn’t do as it is about what you did do. Such was the case for the Texas Rangers during Wednesday afternoon’s overcast, but precipitation-free series finale at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, ...
Mariners OK With Griffey's Salary
2008-05-14 18:16:00
According to Hal McCoy of the Dayton Daily News, Ken Griffey Jr.'s remaining $8MM this year and his $16MM option/$4MM buyout next year will not deter the Mariners.  The revelation that Junior may not require his '09 option exercised and the chunk of deferred money could indeed make the money a non-issue. One question is whether the Reds will treat this as a salary dump or if they'll want a decent prospect in return.  The other is whether Griffey would want to join the last place Mariners.
