2007-02-10 14:50:02 There were a handful of competition cars scattered around the floor at McCormack Place during press days, but most of them could only be considered present-day racing machines. And while not everyone at WINDING ROAD considers themselves to be a fan of today?s NASCAR roundy-round action, we can?t help but take some comfort (and find more than a little awe) in this 1967 Holman and Moody Ford Fairlane. Mario Andretti led 112 of 200 laps of the 1967 Daytona 500 in this Firestone-shod racer, taking the checkered flag as the first open-wheel driver to win the event. The Andretti family has since gone on to have a long and lustrous affiliation with the tire maker, which is now part of Bridgestone. This vintage racer was part of the latter?s show stand, which was chock full of motorsports. source: windingroad |
