Sad Day for the NFL [J. Mark English]

Sean Taylor of the Washington Redskins is dead. This is from the NY Times, by Kirk Semple:Sean Taylor, a Pro Bowl safety with the Washington Redskins who was shot early Monday by an intruder at his home in an affluent suburb south of Miami, died early today from his injuries, one of his lawyers said. The lawyer, Richard Sharpstein, who has represented the 24-year-old Taylor, said in an interview by telephone that he received the news this morning from Taylor?s father.?His father called me at 5:15 a.m. this morning and said Sean was with God,? Sharpstein said. ?He was crying and overwrought with grief.? Sharpstein said he did not know exactly what time Taylor died. The shooting Monday was reported to the police at 1:46 a.m. by Taylor?s girlfriend, who was in the house with Taylor in Palmetto Bay, an affluent suburb south of Miami. Taylor, bleeding profusely, was airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital where he had surgery but remained in a critical condition throughout Monday. He wa...

Boston Bloggers React to Happy Days [J. Mark English]
2007-10-27 00:31:00
Last night, the city of Boston was filled with nothing but good news from their local sport teams. New England continues to prepare for yet another sacrificial lamb en route to what could be a perfect season. The Boston Red Sox went up two games to nothing against the Colorado Rockies in the World Series. Boston College remained undefeated last night by beating Virginia Tech in the final minutes in a thriller, as they seek to retain their #2 ranking in the polls. Here are some reactions of bloggers following the Boston hysteria.First up is Kevin Donahue with his Boston College fan blog:Everyone that I had spoken to prior to the Boston College - Virginia Tech game expected the Hokies to put an end to the Eagles BCS dreams. The only problem was no one bothered to tell BC. Down 10-0... late in the fourth quarter... on the road... in one of the toughest road houses in college football... Boston College came alive. The Eagles scored 14 unanswered points in the final 2:11 of the game ...
World Series: Ratings and Polls [J. Mark English]
2007-10-26 01:50:00
America's national pastime is on the rebound according to the ratings released from last night's game one of the World Series between the Colorado Rockies and the Boston Red Sox. The lopsided game did not seem to affect much in terms of a viewing audience. This is from James Hibberd's blog on TV Week: With the popular Boston Red Sox playing the Colorado Rockies, the game hit a 5.8 rating among adults 18 to 49 in the national Nielsens, up 61 percent from last year's Cardinals-Tigers match. Among total viewers, the game was seen by 16.9 million, up 31 percent. The figures reverse a World Series Game 1 downward trend in recent years, despite the match being a blowout, with the Sox winning 13 to 1. Like any major sporting event, the game throws its competitors numbers off balance, making week-to-week comparisons suspect.Meanwhile, a Fox News poll attempted to take the pulse of the nation as to its thoughts on the World Series. Here are there results:Equal shares of Americans (33 p...
The NFL Invades Britain [J. Mark English]
2007-10-25 23:02:00
The New York Giants and the Miami Dolphins will play the part of good-will ambassadors this weekend in jolly old London. This is not the first time that the NFL has been featured in a foreign country. A few years ago they had a regular season opener in Mexico City between the San Francisco 49ers and the Arizona Cardinals. During the pre-season they have played games in places like Tokyo, as well as London. This will be the first regular season game to be played overseas. Curious Britons will be able to see a real (American) football game, not just some minor league game that the NFL Europe offers. An article the London Telegraph projects the cultural clash likely to take place this weekend:In his rich Louisiana drawl, Eli Manning affects a certain wide-eyed innocence as he contemplates a visit to London this weekend forgetting, momentarily, that he is coming not as a tourist but with a reputation to protect as the New York Giants' star quarterback. The 26-year-old spent a summer i...

Rudy is a...Red Sox Fan?? [J. Mark English]
2007-10-24 00:07:00
Former NYC Mayor, Rudy Giuliani, whom is running for President, and is an die-hard Yankee fan, has publicly stated that he will root for the Boston Red Sox in the World Series according to the New York Post:Rudy's turned red -- and that's sure to have Yankees fans feeling blue. Even though many New Yorkers are still mourning the Yankees' defeat by the Cleveland Indians two weeks ago during the playoffs, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani today declared his allegiance to Boston Red Sox, and said he'd root for them in the World Series against the Colorado Rockies. "I'm rooting for the Red Sox," the Republican presidential contender said in response to a question, sparking applause at the Boston restaurant where he was picking up a local endorsement. "I'm an American League fan, and I go with the American League team, maybe with the exception of the Mets," he said. "Maybe that would be the one time I wouldn't because I'm loyal to New York."Comment -I see where he is coming fro...
ALCS Provides Great Ratings for FOX [J. Mark English]
2007-10-24 00:03:00
The ratings are in, and FOX is the winner. The ALCS match up between the Indians and the Red Sox provided FOX with the most viewers over the past week. Here is a summary from Variety.com:Fox Sports is riding a wave of momentum -- and heightened advertiser interest -- into the World Series after the seventh and deciding game of the Red Sox-Indians series scored big numbers Sunday night. The Boston Red Sox will take on the Colorado Rockies in the Fall Classic beginning Wednesday night.Boston has a large national following while the Rockies are a great Cinderella story: Left for dead for most of summer, the young team rallied to become the last squad to qualify for the postseason and then swept the opening two rounds of the playoffs......Nielsen estimates that an average aud of 19 million viewers watched the Boston Red Sox cap their rally in the best-of-seven series with an 11-2 victory on Sunday. That made it the most-watched program of the night -- besting "Desperate Housewives" on ...
World Series Ticket Demand Halts Rockies Computer [J. Mark English]
2007-10-23 05:18:00
All those die hard Rockie fans going back to 1993 seem to be going nuts over their first World Series trip...This is from Duncan Shaw of CBS News in Denver:Colorado Rockies officials said Monday night their computer system for online-only World Series ticket sales was the target of an "external malicious attack," and that online ticket sales will resume at noon Tuesday.Team spokesperson Jay Alves couldn't immediately provide details of the attack. He said nearly 18,000 tickets were available for each game in Denver -- Games 3, 4, and 5, if necessary -- on Saturday, Sunday and Monday........he company that handles online ticket sales for the Colorado Rockies told CBS4 News it isn't sure what caused its systems to crash on Monday morning."They are amazed and overwhelmed at what happened here this morning," said Colorado Rockies spokesman Jay Alves. He said Irvine, Calif.-based Paciolan's servers received 8.5 million visits in the first hour-and-a-half after the tickets for the Worl...
Rocks and Sox World Series [J. Mark English]
2007-10-23 00:01:00
For a wrap up of last nights game 7 of the ALCS, where the Boston Red Sox defeated to the Cleveland Indians to advance to the World Series, here is some excitement from bean town shared by the SawxBlog:Wow...ladies and gentleman, boys and girls, your Boston Red Sox are on their way to the 2007 World Series, and what a game they played to get there. Like a lot of the games in this series the box score at the end of the night can be awfully deceiving. The final score may have been 11-2, but it sure didn't feel like that for a majority of the game. The story of this ALCS was that the Red Sox actually had the opportunity to manufacture a heck of a lot more runs then they did (the record number of double plays attests to that), and game 7 was a great example of this early on. For the first three innings the Red Sox were nibbling and getting only 1 run an inning when they really had an opportunity to break it open a la game 6. That's why when it's the top of the 7th inning and we're ...
Pandemonium in Piscataway Part II [J. Mark English]
2007-10-19 05:39:00
The Rutgers Scarlet Knights have done it again, one year later. The University of South Florida came in undefeated and ranked number 2 in the nation. Similarly, last year it was the Louisville Cardinals that came in to Piscataway undefeated with a high ranking. Just like last year, the Scarlet Knights came away with the upset.Chris Carlin coined the term last year with his exclamation at the end of his broadcast on WOR with, "pandemonium in Piscataway!!!" The Rutger faithful can once again make this celebrate with madness.Rutgers took down USF by the score of 30-27. Ray Rice ran for 181 yards, showing that he is truly the toast of the Scarlet Knights. His 39 carries demonstrates just how much of a war horse he will be in the NFL. Mike Teel did just enough not to screw up, and helped manage an efficient offense against one of the best defenses in the nation. The only difference between last year and this year, is that last year Rutgers came out of no-where. This year there sho...
Dan Patrick Joins SI Staff [J. Mark English]
2007-10-19 05:04:00
Dan Patrick will join the pages of Sports Illustrated. ESPN has not been the same without the staple of their Sports Center broadcast. He had a unique way of mixing facetiousness, wit, and wisdom in his commentary.Sports Illustrated, which is already chalk full of quality writers, will only continue to improve with Dan Patrick as a member of the staff. Here is more from Variety:Dan Patrick, who left ESPN earlier this year to help organize his own company the Content Factory, has signed a deal with Sports Illustrated to write a weekly column for the magazine and place his website under SI's Digital Group. The Patrick column begins in January, and SI will supervise the audio simulcast of Patrick's daily radio show on his website, starting early next year. SI.com will also carry the radio show, encouraging people, eventually, to download the program as a podcast. SI writers will make regular appearances on the Patrick radio program, including Peter King, Tom Verducci and Rick Reill...
A British Super Bowl? [J. Mark English]
2007-10-19 04:53:00
Two weeks from now the Giants will be heading to jolly old London, some ways across the pond that is the Atlantic Ocean, to square off against the Miami Dolphins. This is all well and good, but the Dolphins lose a home game, and can the average fan in Miami travel to London afford to see their team play? While you ponder this notion, think about what could happen down the line if the NFL dreamers have their way. The Super Bowl could be coming to a European city over there... Most likely in London. This is from the Press Association: NFL commissioner Roger Goodell believes London is a candidate to host a future Super Bowl, an event that has never in history been held outside the United States."There's a great deal of interest in having a Super Bowl in London," Goodell said in a news conference Monday in Phoenix, which will host the 2008 Super Bowl. "We'll be looking at that."The Miami Dolphins and New York Giants are due to play at Wembley Stadium in London on October 28.It will be ...
Say it Ain't So...So Long Joe [J. Mark English]
2007-10-19 00:06:00
Its official. The long drawn out wait is over. The Yankees brass down in Tampa have finally put an end to the Joe Torre era.All Joe did with the club was to take them to the playoffs for 12 straight years. He won four World Series, won the AL East division 10 teams, including 9 years in a row between 1997-2006. The Yankees have had a successful run over the last decade in a half that is hard to maintain in the modern day sports era. He may be impossible to replace, and is assured to have many job offers thrown his way starting tomorrow. Here is more from the Associated Press:Joe Torre is out as manager of the New York Yankees, rejecting a substantial pay cut after the team failed to make it past the first round of the playoffs for the third straight year. Torre turned down a $5 million, one-year contract Thursday that still would have made him the highest paid manager in baseball. Bench coach Don Mattingly is the leading contender to replace Torre, who led the Yanks to 12 straig...
Wishful Irish Thinking [J. Mark English]
2007-10-13 19:36:00
Today, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish take on #4 Boston College in South Bend, Indiana. Unlike previous meetings, where Notre Dame is usually ranked in the top ten, and Boston College plays the role of the spoiler, this time the roles are reversed. I would love nothing more then for Notre Dame to ruin Boston College's season with a huge upset today. Notre Dame can still make this a decent season, and a memorable one by beating BC and getting revenge for their loss to BC back in 1993, when the top ranked ND were taken down by the Eagles. To get into the spirit of today's game we look back at one of the greatest TV intro's ever from the 1993 game between ND and Florida State:Rally sons of Notre Dame, Sing her glory, and sound her fame Raise her Gold and Blue, And cheer with voices true, Rah! Rah! For Notre Dame. (HOO RAH RAH!)We will fight in every game Strong of heart and true to her name. We will ne'er forget her And we'll cheer her ever, Loyal to ...
Colorado Rockies Notch Win in NLCS Opener [J. Mark English]
2007-10-12 06:45:00
The scorching hot Rockies have won 18 of their last 19 games. Talk about a Rocky Mountain High. This team is livin' and flyin', and are tearing up the National League. For we turn to Thomas Harding of MLB.com:Rockies right fielder Brad Hawpe doesn't have to hit the ball far to torment the Diamondbacks' Brandon Webb. After hitting three home runs off Webb during the regular season, Hawpe greeted him in the National League Championship Series with a two-run single in the third inning to pace the Rockies' 5-1 victory in Game 1 at Chase Field on Thursday night in front of a sellout crowd of 48,142.The Rockies, who swept the Phillies in the NL Division Series, stayed unbeaten in the postseason with eight hits, but none for extra bases. As a result of the win, Colorado grabbed home-field advantage. After Friday's 8 p.m. MT Game 2, the teams will play three straight at Coors Field starting Sunday at 6:30 p.m.http://img68.imageshack.us/-my.php?image=amerlegendslogo5wj-.gif
NASCAR Fans Be Warned: Get Tested [J. Mark English]
2007-10-11 19:56:00
This is a story you'd normally find in The Onion. Except this story is true and it comes to you via the Washington Times:(In the interest of full disclosure, Rep. Robin Hayes is a distant cousin...yes I'm tooting my own horn...)House Homeland Security Committee staffers are on a peculiar mission to study "public health issues at events involving mass gatherings," which has personally insulted Rep. Robin Hayes of Concord, North Carolina. The event: NASCAR.The rub: the requirement that the Democrat and Republican staffers attending first be immunized against Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, tetanus, diphtheria, and influenza."I have never heard of immunizations for domestic travel, and as the representative for Concord, North Carolina, I feel compelled to ask why the heck the committee feels that immunizations are needed to travel to my hometown," Mr. Hayes, a Republican, said in a letter to Rep. Bennie Thompson, Mississippi Democrat and committee chairman."I have been to numerous NASCAR r...
NLCS: The Improbable Match-up [J. Mark English]
2007-10-11 19:40:00
As of yesterday there was something like 8,000 tickets available to the D'backs vs. Rockies NLCS. It just shows how little interest there is in this bout. It also is an indication of just how low the expectations were for both of these ball clubs. The Diamondbacks are probably less of the surprise team here. They have solid pitching, and gutsy hitting...the same kind of combo that helped the Cardinals win the World Series last year. They are a scrappy team. The Rockies may be the beneficiaries of an off season discovery. Before the season, the Rockies ground crew realized that the baseballs in the high altitude would dry out, causing great lift in the ball. Combine this with the light air, and you have a ball that will travel a lot farther then at any other ball park. They decided to humidify the balls up until game day, keeping them nice and moist by the first pitch. The added density helped keep the ball in the park more often then not, and finally the Rockies were able t...
A-Rod to the Mets? [J. Mark English]
2007-10-10 15:25:00
Craig Carton on WFAN just came up with a half-baked idea which actually doesn't sound too bad from the Met fan perspective. The New York Mets should offer to Scott Boras (A-Rod's agent) at least $350 million over the next ten years, and be willing to go up to possibly $400 million. If Boras excepts the deal, the Mets now have A-Rod, then the Mets can turn around and trade Jose Reyes and whoever else for Johan Santana. Then the Mets would have the best pitcher and hitter in the game.As Carton said, in reference to A-Rod, if you could have Michael Jordan in his prime, would you not go out and spend whatever it takes to get him?If your the Metropolitans you have to at least give this idea a try...http://img68.imageshack.u-s/my.php?image=amerlegendslogo5-wj.gif
How Close is the End for Torre? [J. Mark English]
2007-10-10 03:34:00
Is it only a matter of time before Joe Torre feels the sharp end of the ax from the Boss? Yahoo News has the latest:Joe Torre and his Yankees players began the wait Tuesday for George Steinbrenner's decision: Will he keep the manager or let him go after 12 consecutive postseason appearances?Few players were at Yankee Stadium, a day after their season-ending 6-4 loss to Cleveland, the third straight year New York was eliminated in the first round. Chien-Ming Wang, Andy Phillips and Jose Molina packed their gear for the long winter. Don Mattingly, mentioned as a possible replacement along with Joe Girardi and Tony La Russa, said succeeding Torre would be difficult. "It's like following John Wooden or something," Mattingly said. "This guy wins championship after championship and we're in the playoffs in every year. You know, it's really ? it's pretty much a no-win situation for someone coming in here to be able to live up to the expectations or live up to what he did. It's not g...

College Football Notes 10.7.08 [J. Mark English]
2007-10-07 13:08:00
Stanford 24, #2 USC 23 - Give it up to the nerds beating the jocks! Stanford, which academic minded first as a school, came into Trojan territory as 41 point underdogs. USC had not lost a game at home in 35 straight games. First year coach, and former pro quarterback, Jim Harbaugh, led his team to a miracle win.Notre Dame 20, UCLA 6 - Rally sons of Notre Dame, the Irish finally have a win! In their first visit to the Rose Bowl since 1925, the Irish defense, led by the seniors, stepped up to finally give Notre Dame Nation something to smile about.#20 Cincinnati 28, #21 Rutgers 23 - Rutgers was expected to be undefeated by this point in the season. But the Scarlett Knights have crumbled under the weight of expectations. Last week at home against Maryland they were heavy favorites, and lost big to Maryland. This week they had a chance to revenge their loss to Cincinnati on their way to a BCS bid. After taking a 17-7 lead into half time, the Knights blew the game with costly t...
D'Backs and Rockies Will Play in the NLCS [J. Mark English]
2007-10-07 09:40:00
Here to wrap up the NL division series are bloggers for both the "Snakes" and the "Rockets":First, we hear from Devin Jessup of the blog Out in the Desert -It is a great day to be a Diamondbacks fan. Today, our team went into the best known stadium in all of the NL, in front of a loud crowd of Cubs fans, against a team with their backs against the wall. It is a hostile environment for visiting teams. It is a situation where many teams have become complacent, stumbled and fallen. It was precisely the situation where so many said the inexperience of our young team would become a glaring, fatal flaw. Today, our team went out and did what they did best. They proved everyone wrong. Again. Everyone except for those of us who have been following this team all along, and know just what they?re capable of. Credit Chris Young, who did just what we?ve seen him do nine times this season, lead off the game with a home run. No line, no waiting, Young took the first pitch he saw and dropp...
Could the ALCS/NLCS Match-ups be Known by Tomorrow? [J. Mark English]
2007-10-06 22:17:00
In short...yes.The Boston Red Sox, Arizona Diamondbacks, Cleveland Indians, and the Colorado Rockies all are up 2-0 in the their respective division series.By tomorrow night, game 3 in each series will have been played. All four teams could sweep, and we can begin the NLCS/ALCS.Baseball's worst nightmare has to be a match-up between the Rockies/Diamondbacks. That series will probably get dreadful ratings. Fortunately for MLB, it will be on TBS where the ratings expectations aren't quite as important as they will be for FOX which will carry the ALCS.should bring in enough good ratings to help the Obviously, FOX would prefer a Yankees/Red Sox match-up, but a Indians/Red Sox MLB should bring in better ratings then last year when the Tigers played the A's in the ALCS.Last year's World Series ratings were so horrific that the Major League Soccer championship game had a higher rating then any one game of the World Series between the Tigers and the Cardinals.http://img68.imagesha-ck...
Olympic Winner, Marion Jones, Admits to Steroid Use [J. Mark English]
2007-10-05 17:55:00
It will only be a matter of time before the International Olympic Committee acts to strip Jones of her five medals that she won as a track athlete during the 2000 games in Sydney, Australia. Here is more from the Associated Press:The International Olympic Committee said Friday it will step up its investigation into the Jones case and the possible removal of her three gold and two bronze medals from the 2000 Sydney Games."We welcome that there is now some light to be shed on the whole affair," IOC vice president Thomas Bach told The Associated Press. "Now, with this admission, we can accelerate and speed up the procedures."The IOC opened its investigation in December 2004 after Jones was implicated in the BALCO steroid scandal. The American runner ? the only female track and field athlete to win five medals at a single Olympics ? repeatedly denied any wrongdoing, and the IOC had little firm evidence to go on until now.Jones was scheduled to appear Friday afternoon in U.S. District Cou...
Peter Gammons on the Mets Collapse [J. Mark English]
2007-10-05 17:53:00
Shout out to my friend whom sent me this article. Its a great bit from Peter Gammons on ESPN on how revenue sharing in baseball has helped even the playing field, but that still does not excuse what happened to the Mets:In the end, none of the six teams that finished first in 2006 repeated in 2007, another feather in Bud Selig's revenue-sharing cap. What once were baseball-mad franchises in Philadelphia and Denver were revitalized as Cleveland makes its way back, a new cast of heroes named Jimmy Rollins and Matt Holliday and Prince Fielder and Carlos Pena stepped to the podium and, damn, can we wait to see how Joba Chamberlain, Troy Tulowitzki and Howie Kendrick fare in October? For every Holliday and Tulowitzki, there is Trevor Hoffman, who no one in the game ever wants to see fall. For every Chase Utley there is David Wright, who stood when others hid and accepted accountability for the Mets' untimely fall.......The Mets "blew" a seven-game lead to a team that rode shotgun do...
No Time to Panic Yankee Fans [J. Mark English]
2007-10-05 17:21:00
The New York Yankees fell to the Cleveland Indians last night 12-3. Fear not Yankee fans, no need to think that the Yankees will take an early bow from the playoffs once again.Going back to 1995, the Yankees have been 5-0 in the ALDS when they lose the first game of the series. Conversely, when they win the first game of the series they are 2-5. Which means, that if history is an indicator of anything, the Yankees will be playing the ALCS.Losing 12-3 may be the best thing that has happened to the Yanks since at least 2004.http://img68.imageshack.us-/my.php?image=amerlegendslogo5w-j.gif
Peter Vecsey Weighs in on Isiah Thomas [J. Mark English]
2007-10-05 17:13:00
Isiah Thomas was found liable for sexual harassment earlier this week, and the MSG organization as a whole looks worse then ever. Peter Vecsey of the New York Post breaks down the quagmire surrounding Thomas:Like hundreds of others who've worked for, played with or for, and partied alongside Isiah Thomas, when I heard his closing "not-guilty-as-found" statement on the courthouse steps I shook my head and rolled my eyes.......How many times can a man deny wrongdoing before his credibility is irretrievably impounded? How often can blame be shifted before even the blindest loyalist converts to a Doubting Thomas? How many times can truthfulness be dodged during decades of incidents and accidents, hints and allegations? How come someone's always lying about Thomas? Distorting what he said or did? Fabricating things he claims he didn't say or do? Why is everybody so hostile toward him? So quick to think the worst? Taking such pleasure in persecuting, er, prosecuting him? Remember ...
Rangers Open Season with a Win [J. Mark English]
2007-10-05 03:58:00
...and also they announced that they will retire Brian Leetch's number in January. There is little reason why this should not be a special season for the New York Rangers. On paper they could be one of the best teams in the NHL, and even SI picked them to go to the Stanley Cup Finals against the Sharks. But they have had great players on this team before, and have shown very little for their efforts. Hopefully they will break that trend this year. Here is more from the Rangers website:The Rangers erupted for four third-period goals tonight at Madison Square Garden to humble the visiting Florida Panthers 5-2 in the season opener for both teams.Trailing 2-1 after two periods, the Blueshirts outshot the Panthers 16-8 in the third, getting goals from Petr Prucha, Chris Drury, Ryan Callahan and Martin Straka.Henrik Lundqvist was his usual self in goal, stopping 27 shots for the victory.Drury was named the game's No. 1 star in his first game with the Rangers.http://img68.imageshack-.us...
Red Sox Fans Roughed up in Yonkers [J. Mark English]
2007-10-05 03:38:00
Not good. And this took place five minutes from where I live...From WNBC:Two men attacked a Red Sox fan outside a Yonkers hotel Thursday night, beating him so badly he ended up in the intensive care unit, police said. The incident began when the two victims, Carlos Ortez and Walter Ostromecki -- one of whom was wearing a Red Sox hat -- were in the bar of the Ramada Inn late Thursday night, according to police.Suspects Duane Somers and Edward McConaughey made a comment about the Red Sox, leading to a heated exchange, police said. The suspects allegedly followed the Red Sox fans out into the parking lot, where they attacked Ortez, who ended up in the in an intensive care unit with broken facial bones.Ostromecki managed to get away.Somers and McConaughey have been arraigned on assault charges.http://img68.imageshack-.us/my.php?image=amerlegendslog-o5wj.gif
Take a Balk with Me [J. Mark English]
2007-10-05 02:55:00
Some MLB playoff thoughts -I didn't think it would be possible, but I'm actually watching playoff baseball. I guess I'm almost over the Mets "long national nightmare". Thanks Adds for the soothing words of comfort. The Phillies are down 2-0 already to the Colorado Rockies. Weren't the Rockies supposed to be up for contraction a few years ago? If not, they should have been. I think maybe two people in Colorado really cares about that team.Speaking of the Phillies, going back to the year 2001 they have gone 86-76, 80-81, 86-76, 86-76, 88-74, 85-77, and then this year 89-73. I guess it took that elusive 89th win to finally cross the threshold. Talk about consistency though. How many other teams have had that many winning seasons in a row without making the playoffs? Lets just say they were due.Going back to the Rockies. As my friend (a Mets fan) wrote: Kaz-fricken-Matsui!! 3-4 with 5 RBIs and only a single shy of the cycle!!! I don't think I have been happier with Kaz....

The Mets Apologize [J. Mark English]
2007-10-02 05:47:00
Dear Mets Fan: All of us at the Mets are bitterly disappointed in failing to achieve our collective goal of building upon last year's success. We did not meet our organization's expectations -- or yours. Everyone at Shea feels the same range of emotions as you -- our loyal fans -- and we know we have let you down. We wanted to thank you for your record-breaking support of our team this year. Equally important, Ownership will continue its commitment in providing the resources necessary to field a championship team. Omar will be meeting with Ownership shortly to present his plan on addressing our shortcomings so that we can achieve our goal of winning championships in 2008 and beyond. You deserve better results. Many thanks again for your record-breaking support. http://img68.imageshack.us/my.p-hp?image=amerlegendslogo5wj.gif-

A Day of Great Expectations and Melancholy [J. Mark English]
2007-09-30 18:06:00
The only thing that I am certain of today is that by eight o'clock tonight, I will be sitting in my seat at Giants Stadium, awaiting the kickoff to a Sunday Night Football match up between the Eagles and the Giants. The Giants come in with a 1-2 record, as are the Eagles. The result of the game will likely determine which team has the hopes of turning around its season, and which team may want to start early preparation for the 2008 draft. The implications of the Sunday night match-up will pale in comparison to the events that would have already occurred in Queens, slightly north of Giants Stadium, as well as the events that would have transpired a hundred miles south on I 95 in Philadelphia. The Mets and the Phillies, as well as the Padres, will set the mood for Met fans at Giants Stadium tonight. Can the Mets stave off a complete disaster by finishing with a desperate finish in their finale? Will the Phillies actually surpass their expectations of always choking? Will there be...
A Consoling Quote for Met Fans [J. Mark English]

Senator Jim Bunning, who played for the 1964 Phillies team that watched a 6.5 game lead evaporate in their 12 games, once said that he would not wish that kind of pain they felt on anyone. Not on any team, nor fans, nor city.It reminds me of what A. Bartlett Giamatti once said about baseball when he was the MLB commissioner in the 1980's:"It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone."Sadly, the Mets are facing the stark reality of leaving those who bleed orange and blue with a fall to be forgotten as the cold begins to sink in. Have mercy on us please, oh baseball lords :-(.http://img68.imageshack.us/-my.php?image=amerlegendslogo5wj-.gif

As I Pull My Hair Out... [J. Mark English]

...I have a wild solution to the wild card. But first... I've been wanting to spew vomit all over the place for the last few weeks. I mean how much more can I take as a sports fan?Notre Dame (not my alma mater, but since I am Irish Catholic I claim the right to root for them)...is 0-4. The for worst start in 120 years. Ugh.The New York Giants - They made a nice little come back against the 'Skins, but the first two weeks, the defense gave up 80 points in two games. The first them their defense has been so futile since the early 1970's.And then there are the New York Mets. Ah, my Mets. This is a team that just a few weeks ago were in position to wrap up the NL East with ease. Tonight, after giving up a five run lead to the Nats, with the Phillies leading the Braves, the Mets might not even make the playoffs!!So yea, it has not been a cheery time to be a sports fan. I've been almost avoiding the blog in the hopes that all this bad luck with my teams might just turn around....
Bloggers React to Mets Decline, Phillies Rise [J. Mark English]

Wow, where did that win come from? It wasn?t a brand new Phillie that provided the spark as I thought, but it was another amazing finish. Jayson Werth?s 3-run blast into the upper deck of left field to bring the Phils within one run was certainly reminiscent of the Russell Branyan shot. More impressive though was the Phillies bullpen which salvaged Kyle Lohse?s pitiful two inning performance as Durbin, Davis, Condrey, Romero (W), Gordon, and Myers (S) combined for seven scoreless. The Phillies now have 47th come-from-behind wins. That is the most in the majors and with 83 wins overall, that means the Phils come-from-behind in more than half their games (57%). Elsewhere in the National League, the Marlins held off a Met rally to escape with a win in ten innings. As fans were walking out of RFK last night, the concourses erupted when we found out the Fish had tied it in the ninth. I expect there to be even more fans at the stadium this weekend - you can?t beat $5 tickets. Unfortunat...

The happy go lucky days in the NFL of Commissioner Paul Tagliabue has been replaced by the disciplinary age of Commissioner Roger Goodell.Goodell and the NFL have come down hard on the New England Patriots. Here is the latest from CBS:The NFL has fined New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick and the team a total of $750,000 for videotaping an opponent's signals. The team also has been told to forfeit draft choices. The Pats were caught videotaping the New York Jets' defensive signals during last Sunday's 38-14 win at the Meadowlands.CBS 2 HD has learned Belichick was hit with a $500,000 fine by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. The team will have to hand over $250,000.The Patriots will also have to forfeit at least one draft pick in 2008, but that will depend on how they finish this season. If they make the playoffs, they will lose a first-round pick. If they don't make the postseason, they will give up their second-and third-round picks. Belichick will not be suspended.Thats n...
NBA: Greg Oden to Miss the 2007-2008 Season [J. Mark English]
2007-09-13 23:52:00
Well, this is never good. You gotta feel bad for Portland. This is from the NBA:An exploratory arthroscopic surgery performed on Greg Oden today revealed cartilage damage to the Portland Trail Blazers rookie?s right knee. Oden is likely to miss the 2007-08 NBA season. "Greg had an arthroscopy and a micro fracture surgery today," said team physician Dr. Don Roberts, who performed the surgery. "He was found to have articular cartilage damage in his right knee. The area of injury was not large and we were able to treat it with micro fracture, which stimulates the growth of cartilage. There are things about this that are positive for Greg. First of all he is young. The area where the damage was is small and the rest of his knee looked normal. All those are good signs for a complete recovery from micro fracture surgery." Oden is expected to be on crutches for up to eight weeks. Recovery time from micro fracture surgery varies from person to person, but generally takes between six an...
