Snark of the Day: Mark Penn
2008-09-12 17:19:00 I think the media so far has been the biggest loser in this race. And they continue to have growing credibility problems Mark Penn, via Jonan Goldberg, National Review.. Mark Penn takes a stab at Self-Justification
2008-06-08 17:42:00 I remarked a while ago: Clinton is now looking for a scapegoat, and Penn seems a likely enough target. Penn’s job, after all, was putting lipstick on a pig…. Hillary Clinton is a product that is about as popular as raw sewage. Granted that Penn didn’t help that image, but what could? Of course, that was when Penn got canned because Mrs Clinton wasn’t getting the wins she needed to achieve her goal of world domination. As of this morning, Penn offers a different take on why that effort failed… and, big shock… Penn says it’s not his fault. No shock that this should show up in the New York Times, is it? The conventional criticisms of Mrs. Clinton’s campaign are these: she had no message; she ran just on experience; she should have shown more of her warmer side; she was too negative; President Clinton’s campaigning hurt her; and she presented herself as inevitable. It is amazing she got any votes at all. Notice, please, that Penn ignores the biggest p...

If Mark Penn is Karl Rove, then Mrs. Clinton is George W. Bush
2008-04-11 20:20:00 I blogged the other day that liberals don’t just hate their enemies, they hate anybody, and everybody, who they see standing between them and their power.   Now Paul Begela seemingly sets out to prove my point. Sam Stein, Puffington Post, reports that “Forehead” Begala thinks that not fired and maybe not even demoted, Mrs. Clinton campaign advisor Mark Peen is a “almost a Rumsfeldian thing:” Longtime Clinton adviser and confidant Paul Begala took full aim at Mark Penn on Friday, expressing scorn for the recently demoted strategist, and comparing his time with the Clinton campaign to that of Donald Rumsfeld’s tenure as Secretary of Defense. “I have nothing but contempt for Mr. Penn,” said Begala at a New York City breakfast sponsored by the non-profit group Public Agenda. “And for those of us who wanted to see him out from the beginning, it became almost a Rumsfeldian thing. And he is not even fired. He has been demoted. H...

Mark Penn?s History, Why He Failed, And What It Means
2008-04-07 20:31:00 With the demise of Mark Penn as a daily figure in this campaign, I wanted to take a retrospective look back. Not just to the beginning of the campaign, but to the beginning of Bill Clinton’s campaign in 1992. It makes the events of the past 3 or 4 days that much more astounding. I. The ...SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: "Mark Penn’s History, Why He Failed, And What It Means", url: "http://2008central.net/2008/04-/07/mark-penns-history-why-he-f-ailed-and-what-it-means/" });

Mark Penn looking for work
2008-04-07 14:24:00 The wires are humming just now with the news that Mark Penn, Head cook and bottle washer for the Clinton campaign, has quit. One such story comes form the Washington Post: ALBUQUERQUE, April 6 – Mark J. Penn quit Sunday as Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s chief strategist, the second shake-up in her campaign’s top ranks since the onetime front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination began trailing Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.). Penn had been a polarizing figure within the Clinton campaign for months because of his personality as well as his strategic vision, but his departure came as a result of another continuing controversy — the conflicts of interest that resulted from his representing major clients as president of Burson-Marsteller, the giant public relations firm, while working for Clinton. Last week, the Wall Street Journal reported that Penn had met with Colombia’s ambassador to the United States to discuss promotion of a free-trade agreement...

Mark Penn Resigns, Too Bad It Came About 6 Months Too Late?
2008-04-07 03:15:00 In a statement from Clinton’s Campaign Manager, Mark Penn’s resignation became public. It’s worth noting though that although Penn will no longer be Chief Strategist, his firm will still be polling for the Clinton Campaign, so it is not a complete break from Penn (as I think the most of the coverage I’ve seen/read so ...SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: "Mark Penn Resigns, Too Bad It Came About 6 Months Too Late…", url: "http://2008central.net/2008/04-/06/mark-penn-resigns-too-bad-i-t-came-about-six-months-too-lat-/" });

Mark Penn Resigns from Left-Leaning Clinton Campaign
2008-04-07 02:27:00 When That Gay Conservative e-mailed me to inform me that Mark Penn had resigned from Hillary Clinton’s campaign, I thought the former First Lady’s senior strategist was acknowledging that her campaign was in a tailspin, but when I read the article, I realized the campaign was in a different kind of spin. Penn wasn’t stepping down ...

Mark Penn Out as Chief Strategist for Clinton
2008-04-07 02:18:00 This evening the Hillary Clinton campaign put out a brief statement about the departure of Mark Penn as chief strategist for her campaign.
Mark Penn,Clinton's Top Strategist, Quits
2008-04-07 01:43:00 WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Sen. Hillary Clinton's chief presidential campaign strategist is quitting his post amid criticism of his public relations firm's contacts with the Colombian government over a pending free-trade deal, Clinton's campaign announced.Mark Penn and his political consulting firm will continue advise the New York senator's Democratic presidential bid, but Penn will give up his job as chief strategist, campaign manager Maggie Williams said."After the events of the last few days, Mark Penn has asked to give up his role as chief strategist of the Clinton campaign," Williams said.Penn is CEO of public relations giant Burston Marsteller and is president of Penn, Schoen and Berland, his political consulting firm.Friday, he acknowledged he had met with the Colombian ambassador to the United States earlier in the week in his role as Burston Marsteller's chief to discuss the pending U.S.-Colombia trade pact, which Clinton has criticized on the campaign trail.Penn called the ...

Mark Penn?s Hat Collection
2008-04-04 19:26:00 Hillary Clinton is against the proposed bilateral trade deal with Colombia. So it makes perfect sense that Mark Penn met with the Colombian ambassador to tell him… that he favors the trade deal. Hillary Clinton’s chief campaign strategist met with Colombia’s ambassador to the U.S. on Monday to discuss a bilateral free-trade agreement, a pact ...
Obama Press Release: Regarding Mark Penn?s Comments About Richardson Endors
2008-03-22 19:52:00 [Obama Campaign Press Release from March 21, 2008] I encourage you to call the Clinton campaign and ask what her top strategist meant when he suggested that Richardson?s endorsement is not significant. Richardson Endorses Obama: Clinton Camp Gets Jealous
2008-03-22 04:12:00 On Friday, Barack Obama received a huge boost with Bill Richardson endorsing his campaign. Governor Bill Richardson of New Mexico was a former Democratic presidential candidate and the nation?s only Hispanic governor. Richardson withdrew from the presidential race in January and his endorsement has been highly sought after since then. Former President Bill Clinton spent time watching the Super Bowl with Bill Richardson at his residence in Santa Fe. Obama finished off this week strong. Obama?s speech on race was extremely successful in polling data, showing he will come out of this bad situation looking like a strong leader. Michigan and Florida are not going to hold redo elections. This is good for Obama and leaves Senator Clinton basically no chance of winning the nomination. The endorsement from Bill Richardson caps off a rough but overall successful week for Obama. On ?Countdown? with Keith Olbermann, Bill Richardson said he waited until now to ma...
Obama Press Release: Obama campaign response to Mark Penn?s erroneous claim

Mark Penn on Barack Obama
2008-03-14 19:07:00 "We believe that [the Pennsylvania primary result] will show that Hillary is ready to win, and that Sen. Obama really can?t win the general election." So it's becoming more and more clear that the Clinton strategy will be to tear down Obama to the point where people start to see him as a candidate who "really can't win the general election". Certainly at this point in the game the claim seems counterintuitive. Obama has recieved more votes, he is bringing in new voters, he is doing better with independents, he is gaining support even among Republicans, and most importantly has been consistently polling better than Clinton in head to head matchups with John McCain. The discussion points have to be.... How far is the Clinton camp going to go to prove this particular point? Can Clinton hammer Obama just enough so that he cannot win the general election, but not enough so that Hillary can claim the nomination? Will the Clinton name be scum if Obama wins the nomination, on...

Clinton Campaign Head Mark Penn Says He Will Use Same (Racist) Strategy Aga
2008-01-04 16:11:00 Some people never learn and Clinton Campaign head Mark Penn is one of them. Read this new account in the LA Times Blog. Either Penn's not playing with a full deck or is tone-deaf, but whatever the case, he does not understand the new America. He just does not get it. He thinks America will buy a strategy already considered racist in many corners and failed in Iowa. Read the text... Clinton aides hint now things'll get nasty - LA Times Blog While you were sleeping, the chartered jet of the third-place finisher in the Iowa Democratic caucus winged its way from Des Moines to Manchester, N.H. And it sounds like some decisions were made on that plane that may alter the course of that party's presidential race.At her concession speech in Des Moines Thursday night Hillary Clinton was all gracious and determined and smiling. But hours later on that flight someone named Mark Penn, who happens to be her chief political strategist, ominously told a gaggle of reporters, including The...
Thomas B. Edsall, Huff Post - Mark Penn Lawsuit May Harm Clinton Campaign
2007-07-10 14:11:00 Earlier. I reported on Mark Penn's health care company ties and how they have provided a problem for Senator Clinton's credibilty during the Presidential Run. Here's a new development. Pollster vs Pollster: Nasty Polling Company Lawsuits Threaten to Become Diversion for Clinton CampaignJuly 9, 2007 11:49 PMJudges and juries will decide who is right and who is wrong in the legal battle between Mark Penn, Hillary Clinton's chief adviser, and a group of former employees of Penn's polling firm.Regardless of the outcome, the lawsuits themselves reveal the corporate underbelly of Penn, Schoen and Berland, a company that celebrated the dissolution of its partnership with spying, double-crosses, back-biting, broken promises, and bitter legal accusations.At a time when Democratic primary voters are particularly suspicious of electronic eavesdropping and wiretaps by the federal government under the Patriot Act, Penn's involvement in corporate spying, legal or not, is likely to hur...
Mark Penn - Hillary Clinton's Strategist Also Has Tobacco and Drug Company
2007-07-08 19:24:00 Bob Novak reported this in his online publication on Saturday, July 7th. This is an example of how Senator Clinton has representatives of the very healh care system she claims to want to change. Hillary's StrategistBy Robert D. NovakSaturday, July 7, 2007WASHINGTON -- Sen. Hillary Clinton is facing increasing Democratic criticism for using Mark Penn as her presidential campaign's chief strategist while he also serves as CEO of Burson-Marsteller, the public relations giant with corporate clients whose policies run opposite to Clinton's.Clients include Royal Dutch Shell (attacked by Clinton for "windfall profits"), as well as tobacco and pharmaceutical firms with records she has deplored. Penn was a key operative in President Bill Clinton's 1996 re-election campaign and continued as a second-term adviser.A footnote: Penn criticized Bloomberg News, which has reported on conflicts between Burson-Marsteller and the Clinton campaign, for obtaining "several months" of Penn's interna... |
