John Smoltz, Mark Teixeira lift Atlanta Braves past New York Mets 3-1 (AP)
2008-04-06 23:26:00
Johan Santana was sharp. The New York Mets just couldn’t do much against John Smoltz and the Braves bullpen. Smoltz pitched five scoreless innings in his season debut and Atlanta beat New York 3-1 on Sunday to complete a two-game sweep of the rain-shortened series. Santana (0-1) gave up only one run in seven innings, ...
Mark Teixeira homers in Braves? 7-run eighth and Atlanta beats Pittsburgh 1
2008-04-03 06:14:00
Mark Teixeira and Yunel Escobar ended all doubts that rookie Jair Jurrjens’ debut in Atlanta would be a success. Teixeira hit a two-run homer and Escobar added a three-run shot in Atlanta’s seven-run eighth inning and the Braves beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 10-2 Wednesday night. Teixeira, 1-for-13 before his homer, said he followed the advice ...
Josh Hamilton Vs. Mark Teixeira: A Statistical Study
2008-03-18 07:18:00
Tim Cowlishaw’s latest piece, found in the Monday edition of the Dallas Morning News, discusses the impact of Mark Teixeira’s now-glaring absence from the Rangers lineup, and how the club hopes to fill the gaping void left by Teixeira following his departure from the organization last July. Of particular note is this paragraph pertaining to center ...
Scott Boras? next big payday: Mark Teixeira (SportingNews.com)
2008-03-04 01:46:00
Agent Scott Boras will be shopping Mark Texeira after the season, and the first baseman will command top dollar. Will the Braves step up, or will a big spender like the Yankees swoop in? Read the full story.
Frank Wren Chat At MLB.com
2007-11-15 23:40:00
Braves GM Frank Wren chatted with fans today at MLB.com.  A hot stove summary is below. Wren is working on various short-term options for center field, as he does not want to block his two center field prospects. Rumors that the Braves would sign Mike Lowell or trade for Ken Griffey Jr., which were silly from Day 1, were shot down. Octavio Dotel wants a multiyear deal, and Wren doesn't seem to expect him back.  The Braves do have interest in re-signing Ron Mahay though. Wren says that he won't go after any more starters if the Braves sign Tom Glavine. There haven't been any talks with Mark Teixeira regarding a contract extension yet. showad();
Andruw Likely Gone
2007-09-28 19:08:00
Update:  Keith Law just predicted Torii Hunter will make 16MM/year in Texas.  That gels with what Andruw's seeking. Tim discussed The Andruw Jones Situation recently and whether he'd accept a 1-year deal or a 5-year hometown discount.  Now, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution discusses the inevitable departure of Andruw Jones here and here. Despite Andruw coming off career-worst season of hitting .222 with 26 homeruns and 94 RBIs, Scott Boras has said there's "no way" he'll accept a 1-year deal.  Instead, he's seeking a contract at the "fair-market value" of $17-20 million per year.  That's Vernon Wells-esque.  And why not?  Wells has yet to approach Andruw's career production.  And it's always easy to forget after 12 years in the bigs that Andruw Jones is only 30. Jones has three games left on his contract that paid him $75MM over the last 6 years, a real hometown discount.  Boras has made it known they have no i...
At Least Mark Teixeira WIll Keep Us Smiling!
2007-08-22 18:37:00
I once thought that I knew heartache back when my first love and I broke up during the Summer of 19990.But that did not seem to be as bad as hearing about the Braves losing last night to the Cincinnati Reds.Leading 7-2 then losing 8-7 is a fine line between heartache and heartburn. But at least we have Mark Teixeira. And this song.Maybe if I laugh enough, the tears of the Braves third, fourth, and fifth starters will go away.Maybe. (Note to Joey Salvia of "The Michael Kay Show": THIS is player's anthem!)
Teixeira likely to have all-caviar diet in upcoming years
2007-08-02 19:39:00
The Rangers apparently offered an eight-year, $140 million contract to Mark Teixeira before dealing him to the Braves. It’s scary to think what he’s going to get on the open market after 2008, as I don’t see the Braves going high enough to please either Tex and Boras, a duo that has proven to be a tough negotiation ever since the 2001 draft. He’s accomplished a lot in his young career, including two Gold Gloves, two Silver Sluggers, totaling the most RBI for a switch-hitter in a single season (144), and hitting for the cycle. What’s the going rate for such a player? Nine years, $200 million? UPDATE (08/02/07): Teixeira confirms the offer.
Braves Announce Teixeira Deal
2007-08-01 00:05:00
The Rangers received even more than anticipated for first baseman Mark Teixeira and reliever Ron Mahay.  We knew they were getting Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Elvis Andrus, Neftali Feliz, and Matt Harrison.  But there's now a fifth prospect going to Texas: southpaw Beau Jones. Jones throws in the low 90s with a sharp curveball; he's been compared to Kyle Davies.  The 21 year-old Jones was recently promoted to High A Myrtle Beach. Meanwhile, Dan Lewis of Armchair GM weighs in on John Schuerholz's many dealings.
Rangers Offered $140MM To Teixeira
2007-07-31 22:20:00
The Rangers made a legitimate offer to first baseman Mark Teixeira before trading him.  Apparently they offered him an eight-year, $140MM package.  That's an average annual value of $17.5MM.  A little light, but not a bad starting point. But since the deal covered the 2008 season and Teixeira would've gotten around $14MM regardless, it was really a seven-year, $126MM offer - same as Barry Zito's contract.  $18MM a year for Teixeira sounds reasonable, but who knows how it will seem a year from now?  He might be a $22MM player at that point.  Teixeira will, of course, hit the open market after the 2008 season.
Mark Teixeira to Braves
2007-07-30 19:18:00
Well, the trade deadline is upon us and the first big deal has been made! The Rangers shipped off Mark Teixeira and lefty reliever Ron Mahay for Braves young studs Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Elvis Andrus. Two pitching prospects went to the Rangers as well. One is said to be Neftali Feliz and the other one is probably Matt Harrison.Although the biggest news from a baseball standpoint is Mark Teixeira; from a fantasy standpoint, the biggest impact comes in the form of Saltalamacchia. Salty should immediatly become the starter in Texas and should provide great value from the catcher position for the rest of this year and years to come. Salty could become a top 5 catcher on most lists next year. In other news, a Dye to the Red Sox trade seems very likely now. The White Sox would apparently recieve Wily Mo Pena and one of Manny Delcarmen or Justin Masterson.
Mark Teixeira Traded to Atlanta
2007-07-30 18:59:00
FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal is reporting the Atlanta Braves have acquired Rangers' 1B Mark Teixeira for C/1B Jarrod Saltalamachia, SS Elvis Andrus and two pitching prospects, one of which is lefty Matt Harrison. This is another good trade executed by Rangers' Gm Jon Daniels.  It follows the acquistions of .400+ OBp High A catcher Max Ramirez from the Indians for 40-year-old OF Kenny Lofton.  While the mass media accolades are deserved, I would have preferred the package of major-league experienced players the Angels offered - 1B Casey Kotchman, SP Joe Saunders and AAA OF Terry Evans. I wonder if the trade rumors reported in the Arizona papers spurred the Braves into action.  While now moot, this is what was reported in the Arizona Republic this morning. First baseman Conor Jackson reportedly would be included in any deal, but to get Teixeira, the Diamondbacks likely would have to part with considerably more, perhaps Double-A outfielder Carlos Gonzalez.
Braves Acquire Mark Teixeira
2007-07-30 18:45:00
UPDATE: ESPN adds that one of the pitching prospects is Neftali Feliz. According to Ken Rosenthal, the deal is finally done, pending a review of medical records.  The Braves will receive Mark Teixeira and lefty reliever Ron Mahay, while the Rangers will get Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Elvis Andrus, and two pitching prospects.  Matt Harrison is said to be one of them; his MRI today came up clean. I'll have some analysis of the deal once we have all the details.  Kind of makes tomorrow anticlimactic, doesn't it?
Latest Mark Teixeira Trade Rumors
2007-07-30 15:22:00
Now we're really getting down to the wire; will Jon Daniels take this thing all the way to tomorrow's deadline, knowing that some teams will move on if he doesn't commit soon? Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News writes of serious talks with the Angels, Dodgers, and Braves.  Grant was the one who still saw the Dodgers involved yesterday, and he's held fast to that.  He believes Arizona's late interest may kick the Dodger talks back into high gear.  Inclusion of Clayton Kershaw would get it done pretty quickly, it seems.  In that scenario a reliever would go to L.A. as well. Tony Jackson of the Los Angeles Daily News has a source saying an Internet report that the Dodgers offered James Loney, Andre Ethier, and Jonathan Meloan to the Rangers for Teixeira and Joaquin Benoit is false.  I'm not sure what Internet report Jackson is referring to; Jayson Stark mentioned Meloan recently but said nothing about an offer. David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal Con...
Braves Deal for Mark Teixeira Quiet, Too Quiet
2007-07-30 01:36:00
When it comes to the Braves supposed attempt to trade top prospect Jerrod Saltalamacchia for Rangers first baseman Mark Teixeira, no news is good news -- at least if you're a Braves fan.Atlanta's front office typically buttons up just before a deal is made. No one is saying a peep. If that's any indication -- even as a stretch -- don't be surprised if the deal comes down any minute.
Trade Rumor - Mark Teixeira, Yankees, Cardinals, A's, Astros, Twins, Rockie
2007-07-28 14:25:00
There are some good stuff in this morning's papers.  As we close in on the Tuesday afternoon trading deadline, specific names continue to get mentioned more and more.   St Louis Dispatch Several teams have inquired about the team's stable of righthanded relievers. Should the club indeed make Springer off limits, Troy Percival becomes the most likely trade candidate. Closer Jason Isringhausen retains no-trade protection. The Cardinals understand that Isringhausen will not accept a deal unless a potential trade partner renegotiates a deal that includes an $8 million option for 2008. New York Post The Tigers continue to scout the Yankees and remain interested in reliever Kyle Farnsworth, who didn't work yesterday. The Tigers had Greg Smith on hand at Camden Yards last night. The Cardinals had Cam Bonifay at Camden Yards last night but don't appear to have a match on a deal with the Yankees. Orioles scout Dave Hollins, whose teams includes the Yankees, was on hand. If the...
New Plan: Extension For Gagne
2007-07-21 17:57:00
The Rangers are throwing trade rumor junkies a curveball - they're now thinking about hanging onto Eric Gagne and signing him to a contract extension.  This development may be related to the limited trade options for the rejuvenated closer. Keep in mind that the extension talk may just be lip service.  As a Scott Boras client, wouldn't the oft-injured Gagne require a good three years, $36MM guaranteed?  That's my guess.  That would be very risky.  Assuming Mariano Rivera remains a Yankee, Francisco Cordero will be the only free agent closer near Gagne's level.  Nice timing for Coco, by the way. I'm still learning how the Elias Bureau determines its free agent classifications.  My guess is that Gagne would not earn the Type A designation because he missed most of last year.  I'll have to confirm that.  If I'm correct, the Rangers wouldn't be able to collect much in the way of draft picks if Gagne walks. Evan Grant also notes that J...
Rosenthal On Teixeira, Dunn
2007-07-20 23:38:00
I neglected to mention a Ken Rosenthal article from yesterday, chock full of rumory goodness as always. Rosenthal believes the Yankees need a backup plan in case they are not able to retain Alex Rodriguez.  Wilson Betemit definitely makes sense in that he'd be useful even if they do keep A-Rod.  Rosenthal basically names every third baseman you can think of.  The most likely option, to me, is to simply sign Mike Lowell as a free agent.  Would he switch sides?  Perhaps, if the Red Sox don't make an offer or try to lowball him. The Braves apparently won't give up Yunel Escobar or Jarrod Saltalamacchia to get Mark Teixeira.  Neither of 'em.  No doubt John Schuerholz will spend the next ten days trying to get Jon Daniels to settle for less. The Reds have a "co-Dunn-drum," as Rosenthal puts it.  Now that's good stuff.  The basic codunndrum here is that no team that can afford Adam Dunn wants him.  Rosenthal likes the Tigers...
Jayson Stark: Even More Useless Than Previous Indicated
2007-07-19 20:35:00
ESPN's Jayson Stark delights in uncovering information that is, by is own admission, useless (or more accurately, publishing useless info that others uncover and send to him). Yet, while his columns are rarely worth reading, at least they're usually accurate--possibly because Stark himself is responsible for so little of the research. The same cannot be said of his latest vital contribution to the greater body of baseball knowledge, which has escaped the boundaries of the "Useless Information Department" and infiltrated the confines of "Rumblings and Grumblings."TrivialityTwo of the biggest names on the trading block this month -- Mark Teixeira and Jermaine Dye -- both had seasons of at least 43 homers and 120 RBIs last year. We bet you can't name the only player since 2001 who was traded, in either the offseason or midseason, following a season of at least 43 homers and 120 RBIs. (Answer later.)And we bet that you can't come up with an error-free trivia question. The Dye part i...
Mark Teixeira (1B-TEX)
2007-07-16 18:49:00
Teixeira led off the 11th inning with a home run (13) and he hit an RBI double in the eighth inning, leading the Texas Rangers to a 5-4 victory over the Los Angeles Angels yesterday.
Trade Rumors - Mark Teixeira, Jermaine Dye, Dontrelle Willis
2007-07-11 17:08:00
With White Sox pitcher Mark Buerhle and the Mariners' outfielder Ichiro Suzuki removed from the trade rumor market thanks to the contract extensions both signed with their respective teams, the rumors will turn to other players just as water flows downhill.  With Rangers 1B Mark Teixeira dues to return at week's end, he is a natural fit as his team stinks, and he is represented by Superagent Scott Boras. The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports the Braves are amongst the teams interested in acquiring Teixeira and speculates the team would have to include C/1B Jarrod Saltalamacchia in any deal.  Given Rangers' GM Jon Daniels lack of trading success, Saltalamacchia offers some public relations cover as he is the best known of the Braves prospects.  However, the Rangers have other needs that could be addressed by the Braves without including Salty.  Amongst them would be AA OF Brandon Jones, AA SP Matt Harrison, current major league pitchers Kyle Davies and Jo Jo...
Teixeira Pines For Orioles
2007-07-07 04:58:00
The Mark Teixeira-Orioles love affair continued tonight, as the Rangers welcomed Baltimore to town tonight for a series.  Said Tex about the Orioles: "In a year and a half, we'll have some fun conversations.  Baltimore, obviously in the future, is a place I'd love to look at." Of course, he also said the typical cliches about being a Ranger and wanting to win in Texas.  But you don't often see a player under contract for an additional year and a half so openly talking about playing for another club.  Teixeira also spoke of his willingness to chat with top Orioles draft pick Matt Wieters to help facilitate a deal.  Both players have Scott Boras as their agent, and both went to Georgia Tech. You may recall that 40% of the Orioles' 25-man roster will reach free agency after the 2009 season.  The O's could backload a Teixeira contract to squeeze him in for the '09 season.  It is expected that the Orioles would have considerable competit...
Mailbag: Nomar To Third Base
2007-06-28 06:10:00
Feel free to hit up the MLBTR mailbag at mlbtraderumors@gmail.com. Today, Peter C. writes: Grady Little has finally snapped and decided to put Nomar at third and James Loney at first base. What do you think the overall repercussions of this move will be? Nomar's injury likelihood increases drastically. The switch does not spark Nomar's bat. With the offensive decline, an $8.5MM salary for 2008, and a lengthy injury history, Nomar is untradeable except in a salary-for-salary type swap.  How about some kind of convoluted trade for Pat Burrell?  Should he stay, Nomar's presence will be an inconvenience, but he won't eat up too much playing time because of injuries. Loney fails to provide the power the Dodgers are looking for over the next several weeks. He may eventually become Mark Grace, but could disappoint in the short term.  Ned Colletti gives up on Loney and uses him in a deadline deal for Mark Teixeira.  I can't decide who else would go to Texas in th...
Mark Teixeira Trade Rumors
2007-06-23 18:56:00
Kat O'Brien of Newsday has the latest Mark Teixeira trade rumors for our perusal.  According to O'Brien, the Yankees, Dodgers, Orioles, Angels, and Braves as said to be interested in the first baseman. We've seen the Angels connected to Teixeira plenty of times, and I still don't get it.  Why would the Angels move Casey Kotchman, by all accounts a fine fielder, off first base?  The rumors persist, but this does not seem like a fit for the Halos.  They need a third baseman. With the Yanks, I imagine the stumbling block remains finding a package good enough for Jon Daniels without including Phil Hughes.  I see this as a long shot, mainly because the Red Sox are not rumored to be after Teixeira.  And I just demonstrated why I don't think the Angels will legitimately chase him.  So the Yankees wouldn't be in competition with an AL contender for Teixeira (unless the Tigers get involved).  There is no pressing need to give up the farm, even th...
Boo Mark Teixeira Hurray Todd Helton!
2007-06-22 00:35:00
Ken Rosenthal had a long column about the Yankees and Rangers working on a trade involving Mark Teixeira. Teixeira, a power hitting first baseman obviously would be a great fit in NY. He would probably bat 5th and provide better protection for A-Rod than Matsui can. However? The Yanks are
Rosenthal On Teixeira For Hughes Possibility
2007-06-19 19:33:00
Ken Rosenthal has a long article today regarding possible scenarios by which Mark Teixeira becomes a Yankee.  Rosenthal says the Yankees scouted the Rangers last week in regards to Eric Gagne and Akinori Otsuka.  The Rangers expect Brian Cashman to have interest in Teixeira, and have been performing due diligence on Phil Hughes and other Yankee farmhands. Rosenthal's main point: Hughes is not untouchable, but Teixeira could be traded to the Yankees without him involved.  Maybe Jon Daniels surrenders two of his major trading chips in a single blockbuster, giving up Otsuka or Gagne plus Teixeira just to get Hughes.  One would be hard-pressed to say that deal does not make the Yankees significantly better in 2007. If Daniels is going to earn that contract extension, he needs to get another big-market team seriously involved.  It would be fantastic to get Boston seriously engaged.  The Tigers are another option.  But if Daniels comes up with quantity ...
Healey's Latest
2007-06-19 01:34:00
Mark Healey at Gotham Baseball has long been a solid, underappreciated source of inside information.  He's got another Rumor Mill up at his site.  My summary follows. The Yankees have an eye on big-name 1Bs like Mark Teixeira and Todd Helton.  But more realistically, they're looking at Tampa Bay's Carlos Pena.  He's got the defense, so even if he regresses to a 20 HR bat it's a nice pickup.  Healey's source believes Tyler Clippard is too much but the Rays like Sean Henn.  The Yanks have also inquired about the versatile Ty Wigginton. The Reds, Rockies, and others have been scouting the Yankees' Double A Trenton affiliate.  Joba Chamberlain, Ian Kennedy, and Brett Gardner are probably the most desirable players on that roster.  Gotham Baseball has previously connected the Yankees to Brian Fuentes and David Weathers.  Another reliever the Yankees like is Chad Bradford, though the O's price may be too high. Gotham quotes an NL scout ...
Matt Garza Expendable in Mark Teixeira Dealings
2007-06-16 01:29:00
It's be a bit harsh to label hard-throwing Twins prospect Matt Garza uncoachable, but clearly his resistence to developing off-speed offerings has cost him not only a promotion to The Bigs but perhaps some friends in the Minnesota organization.Garza -- who throws in the mid-90s -- has pitched reasonably well for the Triple A Rochester Red Wings, but has had moderate control problems, blaming them on the coaching staff' pestering him to improve his change-up and other off-speed pitches. The 23-year-old Garza prefers to do things his way, an attitude that would make him a very expendable but still valuable in any potential dealings for a Twins upgrade at third base.In one of the Twins versions of the myriad scenarios for the trade of slugging first baseman Mark Teixeira by the Texas Rangers, Teixeira is envisioned going to the Boston Red Sox, allowing Kevin Youkilis to move to third base, Mike Lowell and cash to be shipped to the Twins and a Garza and other top Twins prospects to go ...
The Latest on Teixiera
2007-06-06 20:34:00
As the Rangers fall further and further out of the AL West race, the rumors about Mark Teixiera keep coming up.  But Jon Daniels says he's not making any calls, though he expects to get plenty.  Tex would be an upgrade for an awful lot of teams, but the most obvious one is the Yankees, who have both Jason Giambi and Doug Mientkiewicz on the disabled list. Another interesting destination could be Detroit, where first base duties are being shared by the unimpressive Sean Casey and the underwhelming Marcus Thames.  Better yet, the Tigers are stacked with young pitching, so there's no doubt they have the ammo to get a deal done. Mark Teixeira would look great in Yankee pinstripes
2007-06-06 02:39:00
Texas Rangers first baseman Mark Teixeira has made it known to Rangers management he intends to explore free agency next season, and has indicated a preference to play close to his hometown of Annapolis, Maryland.  A lifelong Baltimore Orioles fan growing up, Teixeira's favorite player was former
More Teixeira Talk
2007-06-01 19:32:00
It seems that the hot topic this summer will be Mark Teixeira and a possible trade.  This could end up another Alfonso Soriano/A.J. Burnett situation, where there's tons of words wasted but no deal. Buster Olney believes the Rangers will get some "tepid offers," with no team willing to pony up top prospects.  He also mentions that the Yankees have little to no interest in getting involved.  Though I think that could change if Brian Cashman is pushed out of power. Teixeira makes $9MM this year, and could make $14MM or so in arbitration for 2008.  As a Boras client, you know he'll hit the open market after that.  So if you trade for him, you're basically getting 1.7 seasons of Teixeira for $20MM or so. He's an above average hitter, no one can argue that.  An average first baseman will post an .800 OPS, while Teixeira should be around .900.  The Tigers, Braves, Dodgers, and Orioles are all contenders with a weakness at first base.  ...
