It is a beautiful spring day here in Chicago, perfect for sitting in the bleachers, but not so perfect for sitting inside and watching baseball. I recommend firing up the ol' radio (or laptop), and hauling the game outside with you while you soak up some sun and fresh air. I know it's not easy to some of us to leave our parents' basements for anything other than Comic Con or the odd, offline World Of Warcraft gathering, but trust me, that pale complexion isn't going to help any of us get dates. What a difference a weekend makes, huh? Let me take you back to last Thursday, when most of us were on the ledge and ready to call it season. Of course, looking up at the Reds and Pirates will do that to a fan. To jog your memory, Rich Harden had the highest average in our starting lineup, Aaron Miles had somehow wormed his way into a startering job, and Theriot was challening Ronny Cedeno for the coveted "E6" title. shut up [no way the cubs are going to come back and score 3+ in the bot...

Relax, Peeps. I told you'd I'd get it going Don't look now, kids, but we have a win streak. LOHO favorite Ted Lilly pitched 8 strong innings, allowing only 5 hits and 1 run. However, the best Lilly moment of the game came when the Marlins, in their infinite wisdom, decided to walk the light-hitting Aaron Miles to get to Lilly. At this point, I turned to Max and said "Walk Miles to get to Lilly? I think I'd rather pitch to Miles." Sure enough, in true bad-ass fashion, Ted made them pay, promptly doubling and scoring 2 runs. Live and learn, Fredi. Ted has now beaten every team in Major League Baseball. His domination is complete.   In other amazing news, DLee finally homered (yes, THAT DLee. Do you know another?) and Theriot added his secondhttp://www.chicagotribune-.com/sports/baseball/cubs/chi-0-3-cubs-marlins-chicago-may03,0,-5791630.story long ball in two games, leading to the LOHO Disturbing Image of the Day: If his teammates thought they would never see the end of Ryan T...

Sorry, kids. BBCT was too brilliant to push down, I want everyone to get a chance to see it. So we'll use this as the game thread for today. So, I have to apologize. While (I hope) the animation is better, this is almost a carbon-copy of the ARam home run to left from BBCT1. But it's not my fault if the Cubs do all of their dramatic stuff exactly the same way. Enjoy! Other than abe's brilliance with Baseball Card Theater, there's some news out there. Of course, the writers are going to focus on Ryan Theriot. Despite it all and despite themselves, the Cubs used the unlikeliest of sources for some much-needed inspiration. Theriot had only one home run last season. "Now he thinks he's a power hitter," Derrek Lee said after collecting two hits to get his average above .200. Actually, Theriot is now tied with Lee in homers and has one more RBI. But that's how offensive the Cubs' offense has been of late. "We needed that. It was a big hit at the right time," Lee said. "It make...

Hello again, everybody. It's a bee-yooo-tiful day for baseball. Hey, look everybody! It's MAY! April's over! Yaaaaay! (We don't ever need to speak of April, 2009 again. Deal? Deal.) Precursor to the Festivus Pole? It's May Day, which, according to many international traditions, is a day to cast off the cold, dead winter and celebrate the re-birth of spring, and the coming of new life. Do you hear that, Cubs? Do you get my point here? Don't make me spell it out. Most importantly, we need to lighten up the mood here. So, I give you: First: a montage from the movie Airplane!, specifically for what Johnny says about May Day (about 30 seconds in). But the rest is gold, too. Then, a montage of Harry Caray. Good stuff here, from a guy who could let the Cubs beat in his skull on a daily basis and still say he had the best job in the world: And then a tribute to Harry from Ryan Dempster. (Please don't suck any more, Ryan. I really want to like you when you do stuff like this.): F...

Well, after 20 games, 10-10 is certainly not where I thought the Cubs would stand. I feel like the guy above. But, is it the end of the world? Of course not. While waiting for tonight's game, read this well-thought out post by Maddog at ACB. Puts things in perspective, maybe gets some people off the ledge. And, like Julie said today, at least the Cubs aren't the Orioles or Nationals. Let's see how things stand a month from now. Tonight, No. 5 starter Sean Marshall (0-1, 4.50) goes against Chris Volstad (2-0, 2.70) of the N.L.-East leading Florida Marlins. Dear Sean: It's Arizona, and spring training. You're competing with Aaron Heilman for the final starting job. Bring it. Hopefully that hypnosis will work. For pregame music to get hyped up, press play below. I'll be at their concert tonight. Maybe they'll cover "Go Cubs Go."

I sooo could have gone in a different direction with this The streak is over, but the dream lives on. The Marlins ended the Cubs' 9-game road win streak last night with a 2-1 victory at Dan Marino Schula Manatee Stadium, or whatever that place is called. But no matter, today we have a chance to take 2 of 3 from the fish; no small feat, considering that we had been 0-for-Florida the last two years before this trip. Ryan Dempster will take the mound, looking for his 14 win of the season. Did you honestly think, before the season started, that Ryan Dempster would win 14 games all season? If you say yes, you are a filthy rotten liar. The correct answer is "no, i would have been surprised if Dempster was still in the starting rotation come May." Honest is always the best policy. I'm reminded of this IM exchange between myself and cubsfan2883 the first week of the season: cubsfan2883: well, i guess dempster in the rotation didn't work. me: why? cubsfan2883: 2-0 me: it's 1:22! I'd just like to take this opportunity to thank you, members of this site, for your typically well-thought-out ruminations on sports and culture.  After the following exchange at work, I swear I will never take your collective wisdom for granted ever again. Co-Worker 1:  The Boston Red Sox are in first place. Co-Worker 2:  No, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays are in first. Me:  That's right.  But they're just the Tampa Bay Rays now.  It will be a close race because Carl Crawford is hurt, and Evan Longoria, too. Co-Worker 2:  Crawford steals a lot of bases!  That's a big loss. Me:  ...I guess... Co-Worker 2:  Who could they get to replace him, though? Me:  Barry Bonds. (stunned silence) Co-Worker 2:  The Bears could go to the playoffs this year. Co-Worker 1:  Why? Co-Worker 2:  The Packers don't have Favre. Me:  Losing a 38-year-old QB isn't that big a deal when you're a young, good team that was a field goal a...

This pretty much sums up the way I feel about this team and yesterday's game I don't want to talk about yesterday's game. So instead, I'm going to talk about the LOHO get-together. After most of the crew met up at Murphy's, I stayed behind to wait for flyball while eveyone else left to grab seats in the right field bleachers. This wound up being a good move, as flyball and I walked under CF and right by the batting cages where McDreamy, Reedz, E6, and Fotnenot were taking BP under the stands. We found a little crack in the gate where we could see in, and can report the following: 1) Fontenot is REALLY short 2) E6 is really ugly 3) Reedz is way more buff than he looks on TV 4) When Julie is close enough to McDreamy to be able to touch his butt through a gate, she will resist (you're welcome, Max) 5) When confronted with the chance of getting yelled at by Gerald Perry, Julie and flyball will run away. After making it to the bleachers and the rest of the crowd, I actually got a ...

Welcome to the bigs. Please do better next time. Cubs decide to display stinky offense at home From the Daily Herald: Though the Cubs posted a respectable 10 hits against six Marlins pitchers, they couldn't deliver the timely knock in a 3-2 loss before 41,570 at Wrigley Field. The Cubs went 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position and stranded 11 men on the bases, including six runners in scoring position in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings combined. Such offensive inefficiency left the Cubs vulnerable late in a 2-2 game, and Florida pinch hitter Jeremy Hermida stuck his finger in their collective eye by ripping a game-winning, solo home run to the right-field bleachers off Bob Howry in the ninth. The Cubs, who have scored 2 runs or less in six of their last 9 games, went down meekly in the bottom of the ninth against Florida closer Kevin Gregg. He earned his 21st save by retiring Ryan Theriot on a groundball, Derrek Lee on a flyball and Aramis Ramirez on another grounder to...

"There wasn't much to do. All the bowling alleys had been wrecked. So's I spent most of my time watching Ryan Dempster" The Cubs are finally starting to hit again. And good thing too, because ithe Brewers seem to have decided to never lose games this half of the season.  We still got that Wrigley magic going for us, and hopefully this series at home can serve as a springboard for the big series in Milwaukee coming up. Taking the hill for the Cubs today is one Mr. Ryan Scott Dempster.  Dempster is 11-4, with a 3.05 ERA. He's been a pleasant surprise, like putting on an old pair of pants and finding a twenty in the pockets. He is like a one-man army, like Charlton Heston in "Omega Man." You ever see it? Beauty. For the Fish, its gonna be Josh Johnson.  He's tall.  6-7, even.  He's made two ok starts so far, but he is a little unproven. He once got a dead battery goin' by mixin' bird feces and spit, cause there's like acids...

Back at Wrigley. Thank goodness. That wasn't, uh, the best roadtrip ever. But at least the Cubs salvaged a win last night, hopefully providing some momentum as they open a four-game homestand against the Florida Marlins. And no one should overlook the Marlins even though the biggest series of the season is four games away. Florida isn't half bad. But they do have Uggla, who commits a lot of Ugglas. Anyway, here's the news: Good news:Heading out for the Marlins tonight is Scott Olsen, who, along with pitching, enjoys going out, drinking, fighting cops and getting tazed. (And who doesn't?) Great news:King Sori is back. Got a hit last night and everything. Just missed a home run. He is the center of the universe, exerts energy to others just by standing there. Because of this, A-Ram will have at least one HR tonight. Awesome news:Zambrano is pitching. He's, uh, kind of good at home (5-0, 2.35 this year). And maybe they'll bat him 6th or something.
