Ex-PanthPackHawkBengal SS Marquand Manuel adds Bronc To His Title
2008-03-09 01:56:00
From the Denver Post. After bolstering their linebacker corps during the week, the Broncos have moved on to the safety position by signing Marquand Manuel to a three-year contract Saturday. Manual will receive $1.5 million a year in his deal, $2 million if he starts. And he will compete with John Lynch and Hamza Abdullah for one of the two safety positions. The Broncos will be the fifth team for Manuel, who will be entering his seventh season. He has played strong and free safety while making stops in Cincinnati, Seattle, Green Bay and Carolina. He had drawn interest from other teams as a free agent, but picked Denver. "He was looking for an opportunity to become a starter and felt the best place would be Denver," said Ron Slavin, Manuel's agent. Last week, the Broncos secured free-agent deals with middle linebacker Niko Koutouvides and strongside linebacker Boss Bailey. The hope here is that not a lot of dough got spent on this one, which was probably what it would have taken...

Rouse works his way up
2007-08-17 16:59:00
It appears as if the Green Bay Packers are going to give everyone a fair shot to win the starting strong safety job with the Packers. Earlier in the week, Atari Bigby got his chance, and now it's Aaron Rouse's turn."Rookie safety Aaron Rouse saw some time with the No. 1 defense for one of the first times all summer," reports Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel speaking of the Packers' Thursday training camp practice.Rouse had been further down the depth chart earlier during camp."Earlier in the week, coach Mike McCarthy indicated that Atari Bigby would get a chance with the starters Saturday night against Seattle," writes McGinn. "Bigby has been paired with Marviel Underwood. Rouse and Tyrone Culver generally have been the third pair, followed by Charlie Peprah and Alvin Nnabuife."A little competition never hurt anybody.Welcome to the Railbird feed. Eat up.
Bigby sits in with first string defense
2007-08-13 23:56:00
The Green Bay Packer coaches exhibited a short memory by placing Atari Bigby (pictured) in the starting lineup at safety during Monday's training camp practice."Atari Bigby lined up with the No. 1 defense in place of Marquand Manuel during a team drill," reports PackersNews.com. "It was the first time anyone other than Manuel lined up in the spot."Bigby played poorly on Saturday's preseason game giving up some long gains behind him while failing to tackle a receiver on a play that went for a touchdown.Manuel did very little to be unseated. He only played three snaps on defense during the game. It's very early on in the preseason, and Bigby certainly receives the benefit of the doubt. Packer Nation will be forgiving right now but no so amiable in a month or so. Photo credit: meanmachines.seWelcome to the Railbird feed. Eat up.
Harris compares Bigby to Dawkins
2007-08-11 15:33:00
Green Bay Packers safety hasn't even played a full season in the NFL, but Al Harris is comparing him to Brian Dawkins.John Czarnecki of Fox Sports writes, "Harris made a bold statement to me. Harris said second-year safety Atari Bigby reminds him of Brian Dawkins, the Eagles? All-Pro. Harris thinks Bigby, who is working on the second team right now, can be that good."Packer fans will be eager to agree with Harris. The only thing is, right now Marquand Manuel is holding onto the starting strong safety job. The same Manuel that was one of the worst safeties in the NFL last year.So if Bigby can be as good as Dawkins, what's taking so long for the coaches to put Bigby in the starting lineup?Welcome to the Railbird feed. Waiting for a blockbuster

Well, Larry Johnson is still holding out in Kansas City Chiefs camp. And the Green Bay Packers could still use him. They not only could use him, but they could also use safety Greg Wesley as well. And he's on the trading block.According to the Sporting News, "The Broncos have pursued S Greg Wesley for most of the offseason, but the Chiefs have opted not to make him available - yet. Kansas City appears hesitant to deal with a division rival and wants to gauge the camp progress of second-year player Bernard Pollard before parting with Wesley, its insurance policy. Something still could materialize, however: Denver has a surplus of veterans at defensive end, where the Chiefs could use more depth."Well, if the Broncos don't want to deal a defensive end, the Green Bay Packers have a Pro Bowl defensive end sitting on their bench. Trading away Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila could get the Packers a little bit of Greg Wesley and a lot of Larry Johnson. So how do the Packers sweeten the deal? KGB for ...
Manuel grabs starting job
2007-08-08 16:04:00
Packer fans everywhere might groan at another season of Marquand Manuel starting at strong safety, but they may have no other choice."It's halfway through the second week of training camp, none of the young safeties has mounted a serious challenge and Manuel looks entrenched as the No. 1 strong safety, the position that he played so poorly a year ago," writes Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. There aren't many options at the moment. Marviel Underwood is still recovering from a season-ending knee injury, Aaron Rouse is prone to rookie mistakes, Atari Bigby is still a work in progress, and Tyrone Culver and company are still inexperienced.Underwood appears as if he's coming back nicely from injury, though. Today's Green Bay Press-Gazette has a feature article on Underwood and his progress."He's just trying to prove he belongs on an NFL roster," writes Rob Demovsky of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "Perhaps it's to be expected, but he's off to a slow start this year. He...
Manuel dazed after collision
2007-08-07 15:43:00
"Safety Marquand Manuel took an especially hard hit when he collided with cornerback Patrick Dendy while leaping to break up a pass in the end zone during a seven-on-seven drill late in practice," reports Pete Dougherty of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. "Manuel stayed on the ground for a couple of minutes but got up on his own. He stayed at practice but didn't participate in the final team drills that followed."Dendy is assumed to be okay. There is no word on Manuel's status or if he'll miss any practice time.
Little talk about safety
2007-08-03 15:38:00
One of this year's most intriguing training camp battles is at the safety position where the job is up for grabs. It's likely that Nick Collins has a starting spot all wrapped up, but the job opposite him is open. Maquand Manuel, Marviel Underwood and Aaron Rouse all appear to be in the running for the available spot. What's interesting is that very little has been made of the safety battle in the mainstream media. But that should change very soon. Our prediction is that you'll start seeing articles in the Green Bay Press-Gazette and Milwaukee Journal Sentinel about the safeties as early as tomorrow. So let's beat them to the punch, folks. Many of you have been to the practices. What have you seen? What is everyone's general impression? Leave a comment down below.Of the little bit I've heard, it seems like Rouse is generally doing good, Manuel is generally doing bad, and Underwood is recovering nicely from his knee injury last year. It's hard to tell if that's the truth or that...
Wide receivers stick out
2007-07-31 14:36:00
According to reports, Green Bay Packer wide receivers made some of the nicest plays of the day during Monday's training camp practices. Here are some of the highlights according to Tom Pelissero of the Green Bay Press-Gazette:Wide receiver Carlton Brewster caught a fade pass over cornerback Patrick Dendy on third-and-goal from the 8. The TD pass came from quarterback Ingle Martin. In a one-on-one receiver-vs.-defensive back drill, Ruvell Martin caught two long passes that would have gone for TDs. He beat cornerback Frank Walker, then safety Marquand Manuel. In the same drill, (James) Jones ran a crisp route, came back for the ball and made a tough catch in tight coverage.(Robert) Ferguson had a nifty, leaping grab over Will Blackmon in the end zone that curiously drew congratulations from defenders on the sideline.
Random boners
2007-07-29 16:01:00
There were plenty of mistakes and lapses in concentration at the first training camp practice for the Green Bay Packers. Among the most obvious according to the Green Bay Press-Gazette's Tom Pelissero:CB Will Blackmon had a chance for the day's only interception, but Ingle Martin's errant pass bounced off his chest.Shaun Bodiford looked about as bad as any pro receiver possibly could while trying to adjust to an Aaron Rodgers pass during 7-on-7. S Marquand Manuel appeared to be at fault for a coverage breakdown that left WR Robert Ferguson wide open down the right sideline during the special-category period. QB Brett Favre underthrew Ferguson so badly, though, that Ferguson had no chance to come back and make the catch. In addition to (running back Brandon) Jackson's two drops in team periods, rookie TE Clark Harris dropped a pass down the seam; RB Vernand Morency fumbled; and Charlie Peprah stripped WR Carlton Brewster after a catch.Perhaps most surprisingly, Bodiford didn't ev...
