LIFE and Bikini Atoll: The Bomb as spectator sport
2008-04-04 19:28:00 Part four in a series. The terrible specter of nuclear annihilation was now clear in the American mind, a condition that LIFE acknowledged and addressed. But in the months that followed V-J Day an odd thing happened, as military testing of the new weaponry provided an opportunity for bomb-watchers to indulge their awe without having to confront the frightful context of war. In the estimation of President Truman, America was not only the most powerful nation on the planet, it was likely the most powerful nation in history (8/20/45, 32). If the bomb did possess apocalyptic potential, at least it could now be addressed within the relative calm that attends triumph, peace, and unchallenged superiority. In July 1946, the U.S. detonated a bomb over Bikini Atoll in the South Pacific, and the following issue of LIFE presented most Americans with their first images of the test. The five-page photo-essay, a marvel of symbolic complexity, begins in matter-of-fact fashion. Just before ?Mike...

Leprosy in Marshall Islands
2008-02-08 21:09:00 Medical specialists say the Marshall Islands have the most cases of leprosy, in the world. And the city with the largest number of Marshallese people, outside the Marshall islands, is Springdale. And Bingham says, it makes sense, then, that leprosy is spreading to the city. “It’s from the Marshall islands; that’s why we’re seeing it.” Doctors ...

Marshall Islands and Micronesia
2007-11-10 07:53:00 The other day I went to buy some pants for what I thought was about $40 dollars only to learn when I went to pay for it that they were only 12! Maybe the same kind of thing will happen to you come November 19, 2007 because on that day mail addressed to the Marshall Islands as well as to the states of Micronesia will no longer be considered as international mail but as domestic, meaning much lower prices! It's always a happy day when you have to spend less money than you realized. Retreat from the Retreat
2007-06-10 05:45:00 Before I get into a detailed description of our different seminars in Majuro, I want to talk about our field trip. Albon Ishoda, President of the Marshall Island Conservation Society in Majuro arranged for all of us to spend Thursday afternoon on one of the less inhabited islands of Majuro, Eneko. He called Eneko a "resort island," but when I think of the word "resort island," I think of Cozumel or Cancun. Eneko was more like Managaha with some people living on it.Albon, under the prodding of Ada Eledui, Director of the Department of Conservation and Law Enforcement of the Koror State Government in Koror, Palau, also arranged for some of us to go trolling. I was one of those people. He hooked us up with a local sports fisherman named Sherwood. In addition to Ada and me, Julio Carcamo, Director of The Nature Conservancy Honduras & Nicaragua Program, and Fabian Iyar of the Pacific Institute of Coral Reef Centre in Palau went fishing. We met up with our boat at the dock near Hotel Rober...
