Martial Arts is Good for the Soul
2010-12-22 15:26:00 It is really a privilege to work with people who want to learn something that you are good at and have spent a lifetime studying. I am really a professional student of sorts, training in the martial arts and then teaching it over and over to adults that realize it may be their calling. Although MMA's popularity, Ninja Turtles cartoons, Jackie Chan movies and even videos games like Mortal Kombat have motivated people to come by my school, their interest is really grounded in the same things I loved as a kid; Bruce Lee, Sugar Ray Leonard, Kung Fu theatre and Chuck Norris. For whatever reason their parents could not get them into martial arts as a kid, so many...
Women in Mixed Martial Arts: Fighting for Equality Part I
2010-12-21 15:44:00 Revisiting my Favorite PostsA conversation about the state of women in the sport of mixed martial arts should begin with a glance back at two combative sports with a long history: boxing and wrestling. Although women's boxing first appeared in the Olympic games as a demonstration in 1904, it really took the entire 20th Century for it to gain acceptance within the athletic community. Despite strong social stereotypes and traditional points of views on the role women should have within our society, female fighters have been given several venues to showcase their skills, but lacked a fan base. Although organizations like The Swedish Amateur Boxing Association and The National Wrestling Alliance provided opportunities to see women part-take in the...
I Was Bullied, Martial Arts Helped Me
2010-10-16 15:51:00 20/20 on ABC featured a story last night, Friday, October 15th on bullying. We have heard a lot of about various of forms of bullying this year, stories of intimidation and ridicule children over clothes, style, looks, sexual orientation, school associations or size. These are only a few examples of how children prey on eachother. I am sure most of your are aware of the recent cases where several teenagers have taken their own lives after being victimized by bullies. According to the National Crime Prevention Council, around 160,000 kids fear going to school because of being bullied. Most of us can remember witnessing this type of behavior. For me, experiencing being bullied when I was in third grade by a...

Best Martial Arts Movie Posters (If Best=Bad=Cheesy)
2010-10-04 16:24:00 These martial arts movie posters are awesome! They are the best, if best means bad with a side of cheesy. I would hang any of these in my school (and some already are). They offer humor, visuals that characterize the comedic side of kung fu theatre and tag lines that clearly were not written by Americans. Chop socky cinema has inspired so many that practice martial arts today....
Michael Jackson's Kids Learning Martial Arts
2010-07-24 20:58:00 The martial arts is a perfect activity for celebrity kids. It is an environment where the playing field is equal. Because of the engrained discipline and the hierarchy system, martial arts can really give a highly privileged child a sense of normalcy. The late pop star Michael Jackson I am sure struggled with providing a sense or norm for his children, Blanket, Paris and Prince. Michael Jackson's children have been seen many times coming and going from their karate school in Encino. Blanket, Prince and Paris are all students of the school and have earned their yellow belt. The children of the legendary Michael Jackson are often photographed with giant smiles on their faces leaving the karate academy. pictures taken...
My guts redux
2010-06-01 02:03:00 So I finally had the hernia repair in November. Anyone care to hazard a guess as to how long that repair actually held? Anyone? No? February, People. Just…..February. Remind me to express utter outrage to the surgeon the next time I see him. Which, if I can help it, won’t be for a few months. ...
Training Martial Arts While Pregnant: Exercising Pregnant Part II
2010-04-14 13:27:00 Being pregnant presents a lot of new challenges if you want to keep up the same lifestyle from your pre-pregnancy days. Whether it is working out, working, traveling, seeing your friends or socializing, your body will dictate to what degree you can maintain the same level of business. I will say that having determination to be healthy and exercise regularly requires mental focus above and beyond a normal pre-pregnancy day when you just simple went out too late the night before. If martial arts, kickboxing or boxing is your hobby you do not need to give it up while experiencing a healthy prenancy. Although you still need your doctor's permission to continue your exercise program while pregnant, I have not...
Celebrities Doing Martial Arts
2010-03-08 13:32:00 There is such a wide range of martial arts to practice. Most long time practitioners will agree that the beauty of the martial arts is that there is one style out there that suits everyone. Some may even philosophize that the style chosen is a reflection of practitioners personalities. But it should come as no surprise that celebrities too have hobbies and part-take in activities that provide then with stress release and overall life enhancements. The martial arts fits the bill perfectly. Even celebrities that take on training for a role generally learn to respect the dedication required to excel and the benefits the martial arts offers the body and mind.James Cagney - The classic actor who helped to define...
Improve Sexual Pleasure and Performance with Martial Arts & MMA Trainin
2010-02-24 14:42:00 Research says that sex can help ease joint and muscle pain, fight depression and even improve the heart's overall health. Many cultures also say it lenghtnes a person's life span. Sex can be thought of as an act of endurance, or hopefully that the way you experience it. In many cases the arms and shoulders tend to get fatigued and therefore exercises that improve the muscular endurance of the limbs that hold you up can improve you sexual experiences. But truth be told, there is an area referred to as the sex muscles which are rarely utilized in the course of an average person's day that happen to be integrated in so much of the martial arts and MMA...
What Makes A Perfect Student of the Martial Arts?
2010-01-14 23:21:00 I have been lucky to teach martial arts in various environments to an array of people. Working with talented natural athletes, those who have progressed to competitive levels and young adults who probably missed their calling as kids, who make punching and kicking look easy, they have just made my job so simple. It does not take much work for me when I have these types of students. I reflect on this often as a trainer/coach/instructor. - Could I really grow and develop such a diverse teaching palate if this is all I encounter? I don't think so. ...

Must See Martial Arts Movies
2009-10-12 19:04:00 One of my favorite conversation pieces is the whole concept of top ten..., top five.... and so on. When I am traveling with my friends or husband I like to discuss the whole idea of being on a deserted island (with all the comforts of course) and having to decide what movies, albums and books that you would want to be stuck with for the rest of your life. Below is the list of films that I think are 'MUSTS' if you are martial arts fan, junkie or geek. These are amazing fight films, with great action scenes and an unbelievable display of martial athleticism over all. They have been influential to so many of us that have been...

Women in Mixed Martial Arts: Fighting for Equality Part II
2009-09-13 19:08:00 Ultimate Grappling has recently addressed the state of women in mixed martial arts. Mainstream news agencies like nbcsports.com and newamericanmedia.org have also recognized women in the sport of MMA as a newsworthy topic. In the year 2008, www.fightergirls.com increased its registered fighters to include over 1000 women. With this type of growth, it is only natural for Ultimate Grappling to continue giving well-deserved exposure to the female patrons, practitioners and pageants of mixed martial arts. ...
The Science of Balance: Taking Your Martial Arts Training to a Higher Level
2009-09-02 08:43:00 Superficially, good balance is looked at by most as the avoidance of getting knocked over. Therefore, martial artists are considered to have great balance because they spend so much time performing power movements on one leg (i.e. kicks). Today there are so many tools and applications available to improve balance on a microscopic level. Some may question why this would even be necessary for a martial athlete if throwing power kicks doesn't cause the kicker to wobble or fall off their feet. But balance has far more layers to it when understood from a kinesthetic perspective. It is time for the martial athlete, regardless of their competitive realm, to understand the layers of balance training and how it should...

A question for the Judo guys
2008-07-05 08:32:00 So in the unarmed combatives system that I am currently practicing/teaching there is a shortage of throws and takedowns. I feel that this is something that the system should be addressed because quickly and efficiently dropping people has some significant tactical advantages in some situations. My question is that given a seminar format program, rather than a dedicated school, what throwing techniques would you include into the system? Because of the format of the training course we must recognize that we cannot depend upon strength, speed, timing, or finesse. Additionally we need something that is semi-safe to practice when the participants are not particularly good or familiar with (Ukemi) Break Falls. The (Kazushi) breaking of the opponents balance needs to be the rear or rear obliques, and cannot include any (Sutemi) Sacrafice throws as primary technique, in fact I am biased against most the sweeps, reaps, and hooks because of the compromise of balance. read more

Mixed Martial Arts
2008-06-25 12:28:00 Is not martial arts a great way to get in touch with your body, get a better body feeling and self consciousness, and get fitter and healthier all at the same time?I have always believed that human beings were born to move. By move I am trying to outline a human?s need for physical education. The farther we look back on the history of our ancestors, we clearly see that they all lived in nature and that couch potatoes are rather a phenomenon of our time.In order to get started with mixed martial arts, you will need the right MMA Gear. The best spot to grab your gear is groundandpound.com. I can highly recommend their online store as they have the real gear for real fighters! For instance, if you are interested in cage fighting you will need a pair of MMA Gloves. They are the best. From my own experience, I can say that if you do not have the right gear for the sport you want to try, it will not be fun. Therefore, it is truly important. When watching sports on TV the other day, I notice...

Ex-wrestler transitions to mixed martial arts
2008-06-07 00:37:00 Fighting has been in Rodney Begnaud's blood as far back as he can remember. He tells the story how his father, John Ernest, and himself as a 4-year-old left the hospital when his brother, former Northside High track and football star John Shane Begnaud, was born to go watch Andre the Giant wrestle at the Domingue Center near N.P. Moss Elementary. So although Begnaud, known as Redd Dogg Rodney Mack in fighting circles, may not officially have any ultimate fighting experience, he's not at all concerned about looking like a fish out of water when he makes his MMA debut at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Lafayette vs. The World ultimate fighting card at Blackham Coliseum...More?source: theadvertiser.com

Jack Black Busts Martial-Arts Moves At Fans' Request After 'Kung Fu Panda'
2008-05-31 18:20:00 'I did not live with the pandas. ... I just grew out my beard,' Black says of his preparation for the film.By Shawn Adler Jack Black Photo: MTV News "You want me to do some kung fu?" Jack Black teased an excited audience member, who had stepped up to the mic looking for some real moves. "OK, just a taste." The crowd came for a taste but wound up getting the full-course meal, complete with a kicking (and punching and twirling and jumping) dessert, as MTV's Sneak Peek Week continued with a screening of Black's "Kung Fu Panda" on Friday night at the Paramount Studios Lot. The animated story of a panda waiter who winds up a master fighter was followed immediately after by a Q&A with Black himself. "Important note," he added, sitting down after his demonstration and picking up his personal items from the table. "If someone's gonna fight you, remember to take out your wallet!" Black's hands may be "fast as lightning" (when the heck did he take out his wallet?) but they w...

2008-05-28 05:31:00 One of the world's most dangerous sports just won another round in Maryland.
