SKRTEL: RAFA'S THE REASON I SIGNED
2008-01-11 17:56:00 Martin Skrtel admits the impression left on him by Rafa Benitez was key to him spurning offers from other Premier League clubs. The Slovak trained with his new teammates for the first time on Friday morning before Liverpoolfc.tv was granted the first interview.Skrtel - who was reportedly a target for Everton, Spurs and Valencia - told us his new boss made quite an impression during negotiations between the Reds and former club Zenit St Petersburg."The manager wanted me to come here which was important for me," said the 23-year-old. "I found him to be a nice man and Rafa was a big influence on me coming to Liverpool."I am looking forward to my first game at Anfield and playing in front of the Liverpool supporters. I can't wait. So who's this Martin Skrtel fellow ?
2008-01-08 12:20:00 Apparently he's meant to be hard as f**k and full of promise, hmmm, well not if you've seen him play against Everton or Ireland (little Kevin Doyle managed to out jump him (6"4') for a headed goal). While he's been criticised for lacking pace, he's faster than Hyypia and Hyypia managed to be one of the best defenders in the world for several years !He passed his medical today and also his transfer fee & personal terms have already been agreed. Initially I imagine Skrtel will be backup to Agger & Carragher but in the next couple of seasons we just might get to see him replace Carragher if he does get to fulfill his vaunted promise.

Martin Skrtel Linked With Liverpool; Reds Boss Benitez Wants Centre-Back, R
2008-01-05 14:06:00 Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez has clarified that he is looking to bring in a central defender and not a left back, during the ongoing transfer window. The Reds defensive plans were hit in the summer when they were denied sale of Argentina left-back Gabriel Heinze by arch-rivals Manchester United. As such, there was speculation that Benitez would get in a left-back this month. However, with injuries to centre-backs Daniel Agger and Sami Hyypia, the Reds have been left short on numbers in the heart of defence where youngster Jack Hobbs is on standby to fill in the role to partner vice-captain Jamie Carragher, Liverpool are clearly looking for a new defender. And according to reports, Martin Skrtel, 23, is said to be one of the targets for the Merseysiders. The Slovakian international plays in the Russian Premier League for Zenit St Petersburg and is reportedly rated at £4-5million. ?We are working hard with the owners and the chief executive.
