Martinique 1848 and a Baptism
2008-01-25 22:01:00 UnknownFrench, Martinique, summer 1848Daguerreotype4 3/8 x 5 13/16 in.J Paul Getty Museum This photograph records the baptismal ceremony for the slaves of the West Indian island of Martinique in 1848.The sacrament represented affirmation from the church of their recent emancipation from slavery.Britain captured the island during the Seven Years' War, holding it from 1762 to 1763. Between 1794 and 1815, there was a strong British interest in Martinique, with Britain controlling the island during the French Revolutionary Wars from 1794 to 1802; and again during the Napoleonic wars from 1809 to 1814.Slavery was abolished under the earlier period of British rule, but reinstated after 1802, when the Treaty of Amiens gave Martinique back to France, and Napoléon Bonaparte allowed slavery again.Abolishing slavery in all its colonies was one of the goals declared by the new French provisional government in early 1848. Martinique Earthquake Felt Here in Puerto Rico
2007-11-30 11:15:00 Yesterday around 3pm there was a 7.4 magnitude earthquake about 90miles off the north west coast of Martinique in the Caribbean. Fortunately, it appears that was little or no damage and no major injuries. The BBC website is reporting that 2 people in Martinique were injured (no details available). The quake was so large that it was felt here in Puerto Rico as a 6.2 magnitude quake. I was in my office in Rio Piedras and the building began to shake slightly just after 3pm. It was nothing major, but it certainly felt strange. From all accounts here in Puerto Rico the quake was felt throughout the island from San Juan to Cabo Roja. It was the biggest earthquake to hit this part of the Caribbean since the 1940’s. There have been no reports of damage or injuries here in Puerto Rico. The worst quake to hit Puerto Rico was back in 1918 when a 7.3 quake hit just off the coast of Aguadilla. Image Source: elnuevodia.com
