Religión, opio del pueblo ? Karl Marx
2009-07-16 09:57:00
Misunderstanding Marx: Brad Delong
2009-05-06 04:30:00
By Thomas RigginsMay 2, 2009The blogosphere has lately witnessed some interest in a lecture, "Understanding Marxism" posted by Professor Brad Delong of the University of California and a former Clinton administration official. Delong calls himself a neoliberal economist and his lecture is such a confused jumble of misrepresentations and misunderstandings of even the most elementary rudiments of Marxism that its refutation will serve the two fold purpose of clarifying some elementary ideas of basic Marxism 101 and of exposing the absolute insipidity of neoliberal thinking. The first thing that struck me about this article, "Understanding Karl Marx" by Brad Delong, besides how poorly written it was, is how uninformed the author appears to me on both the origins of Marxism and just what Marx thought. It takes a lot of CHUTZPAH to write an article when you don't yourself appear to understand what you are writing about.Take the opening sentence of the article: "In the beginning was Karl ...

Plato?s now legendarily odious dismissal of the painter?s ?art? as ?worthless? issued from his epistemic Grecian conditioning to accept ?usefulness? as the mitigating and decisive factor in determining relative ?value.? It is clear that a painting of a bed cannot be slept upon and, regardless of the sentiment attached to an aesthetic vision of an ?Ideal Form,? it is additionally obvious that a painted ?bed? is twice removed from that Ideal Form, i.e., the best bed that money can buy. Which perhaps helps to explain Ikea but that is another post. It is my premise that the migration of ?value? through approximately 2000 years of discourse and inquisition about it has allowed a number of cyclical ?returns? to both Platonic and Marxist views about the valuable nature of objects for consumption or contemplation. In 1867, Marx demonstrated ?commodity fetishism? as proof that commodity objects were for both use and barter, focusing our comprehension of the relationship of ?exchange? to th...

Even Groucho Marx Would be Happy With Indonesia?s Profit Opportunities
2008-05-30 17:45:00
At times, you can tell a country by the company it keeps. Indonesia just announced it plans to leave the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), the infamous cartel that tries to push our oil prices through the roof. That decision may not seem very significant, but consider it this way: If you were Indonesia, which countries would you rather have as your buddies? A bunch of sleazy, corrupt, idle ?lottery winners? such as Nigeria, Venezuela and Angola? Or would you prefer a set of hard-working and diligent neighbors such as Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand? Not to mention two…SHARETHIS.addEntry({- title: "Even Groucho Marx Would be Happy With Indonesia?s Profit Opportunities", url: "http://jutiagroup.com/2008/05/-30/even-groucho-marx-would-be-h-appy-with-indonesia%e2%80%99s-p-rofit-opportunities/" });

An EARTH DAY SPECIAL from Churchill’s Parrot blog Granted Karl Marx was a bitter, self-loathing, misanthrope, half-crazed with envy and his own depraved world view, but at least he had integrity.  When advocating the implementation of his beloved communism, for instance, he made no attempt to sugar coat what would be required: ?The proletariat will use its ...

The Post-Modern through the eyes of Marx
2008-03-06 12:39:00
I promised in my previous post to upload another analytical 'post-modern' video clip. This one is a talk by Frederic Jameson at the University of Toronto on the the late capitalist features of what has been labelled as a 'global post-modernity'. Jameson is one of the last great philosophical Marxists, one who proved to be a worthy student in the Frankfurt School tradition. His analysis are said to be as much grounded in contemporary modern culture as they are historically constructed in the social relations of the modes of production.Enjoy

Was Karl Marx a Zionist NeoCon? -- Part 2 -- Was Marx the Previous Incarna
2007-11-18 10:32:00
It is clear that Karl Marx would be considered quite politically incorrect today. He had a low opinion of Islam and Islamic society and of its capacity for civilization. Nevertheless, the Bolsheviks early declared their support for the political claims of Muslim peoples and nations against those of non-Muslims, even those of dhimmi peoples who had suffered mass murder at Muslim hands, like the Armenians [see here]. Curiously, the Bolshevik pro-Muslim, pro-Arab policy converged with that of the British Empire --supposed imperialist enemies and betes noires of Communism. This was especially so in the Land of Israel, where the British government was supposed to help Jews return to their ancient homeland and to foster development of the Jewish National Home, designated by the San Remo Conference and the League of Nations. Here Karl Marx sounds like Hugh Fitzgerald, the learned anti-Islamist of the JihadWatch/DhimmiWatch websites. Even in 1853 there was a pro-Islamist or Turcophile press ...

Was Karl Marx a Zionist NeoCon? A Bat Ye'or or a Robert Spencer ahead of hi
2007-11-16 00:14:00
Karl Marx is supposed to be one of the intellectual founders of Leftism, whatever that means today. Today, of course, the standard "leftist" position is to support Arab and Islamic terrorism --for whatever reason. Nevertheless, Karl Marx took the position that Islamic society was barbarous and an obstacle to civilization. Does that mean that Robert Spencer, Bat Ye'or, David Bukay, and likeminded others were really Marxists? Here's what Marx had to say back in 1853 in the American newspaper, the New York Tribune [or Daily Tribune], edited by Horace Greeley, for which Marx was a regular foreign affairs correspondent:This splended territory [the Balkans] has the misfortune to be inhabited by a conglomerate of different races and nationalities, of which it is hard to say which is the least fit for progress and civilization. . . Slavonians [Slavs], Greeks, Wallachians [Rumanians], Arnauts [Albanians], twelve millions of men, are all held in submission by one million of Turks, and up to...
Louis Althusser, "For Marx." Parts I & II.
2007-10-31 05:49:00
Orig. published by Penguin, 1969.Excerpt,  ... [T]he explanatory model goes like this: 'the various elements of the superstructure act and react on one another to produce an infinity of effects. These effects can be assimilated to an infinity of accidents (infinite in number and with an inner connexion so remote and therefore so difficult to discover that it is negligible ), amid which 'the economic movement ' asserts itself. These effects are accidents, the economic movement is necessity, their necessity.... What is remarkable in this text is the role it attributes to the different elements of the superstructure. It is just as if, once the action-reaction system was set in motion between them, they were charged with finding a basis for the infinite diversity of effects (things and events, as Engels puts it) between which, as if between so many accidents, the economy picks its sovereign way.In other words, the elements of the superstructure do have an effectivity, but this effec...

Sharpe | ISBN 0765616947 | 2007 | PDF | 1 MB | 257 pagesThis book is a history of modern economics as represented by the contributions of the three most influential economists in world history. Adam Smith expounded a revolutionary new doctrine in the 18th century that a nation of rich and poor could flourish under laissez faire and an unfettered market; Karl Marx inspired disenfranchised workers and intellectuals in the 19th century to end the exploitation of the underprivileged by the powerful; and in the 20th century, British economist John Maynard Keynes sought to stabilize a crisis prone market system through activist fiscal and monetary government policies.

Who said Marx wasn’t Green?
2007-09-04 09:41:00
by William Bowles An ecological approach to the economy is about having enough, not having more.’ — John Bellamy Foster  Review: Ecology Against Capitalism by John Bellamy Foster ‘For the first time … nature becomes purely an object for humankind, purely a matter of utility; ceases to be recognized as a power for itself; and the theoretical discovery of its autonomous laws appears merely as a ruse so as to subject it under human needs, whether as an object of consumption or as a means of production. [my emph. WB]’ — Karl Marx, Grundrusse For some of us on the Left it appears that confusion reigns in much of what’s left of the Left, caught up as it is in its own largely petty squabblings, mostly about who said what to whom and when, thus when a book comes along like Ecology Against Capitalism, I feel damn well vindicated! For make no mistake, Foster’s take on things is rooted in Classic Marx, it’s us who have gotten it wrong for the past 150 years. Why this is so imp...

A former Joint Director (History Division) and infantryman, he has been running an NGO, Peace and Disarmament, based in Pune for the past 10 years. As a military historian he specialises in insurgency and peace process.Karl Marx took a dim view of India and its heritage.Writing in the New York Tribune dated June 25, 1853 (quoted in Lewis S Feuer edited Marx and Engels Basic Writings, Anchor Books, NY 1959, pp. 474-481) he claimed that the ?Golden Age? of India was all myth and India was always a poor starving country. He further went on to admire and appreciate the British for destroying the Indian village industry and economy so that India could ?modernise?.But to the Indian communists, the words of Marx are like commandments from God. Their devotion to the dead communism can be seen on the walls of Calcutta, possibly the only city in the world where you can find pictures of Marx, Lenin and St...
