2012-04-12 21:58:00

Support Access to Justice for Low-Income Massachusetts Residents
2012-03-25 21:34:00
Community Legal Aid is the state-funded civil legal aid program serving low-income and elderly residents of Central and Western Massachusetts (Berkshire, Franklin, Hampden, Hampshire, and Worcester counties). Massachusetts Justice Project is its federally-funded counterpart. The two groups have teamed up to raise money through their Access to Justice Campaign 2012. I just donated and hope you will too. CLA and MJP have just one attorney available for every 7,000 needy clients in Western Massachusetts. Their services help our neighbors save their homes from foreclosure, secure protection from domestic violence, prevent elder abuse and fraud, and much more. Here's one story from their brochure: After leaving an extremely abusive relationship, Maria* continued to be harassed and threatened by her abuser at her subsidized apartment. She was afraid to go outside, and could not do the work program required for her receipt of welfare benefits. As a result, her benefits were cut off, a...

Massachusetts Three-Strikes Sentencing Bill Draws Criticism
2012-02-27 02:30:00
Hat tip once again to Lois Ahrens at The Real Cost of Prisons, who sent me more articles and a factsheet from Families Against Mandatory Minimums about three-strikes sentencing. Here's FAMM's summary of how the legislation currently pending in the Massachusetts statehouse would change our existing three-strikes law: Current law: Requires maximum sentence for any felony conviction if defendant was previously sentenced twice to three or more years in prison. Parole is possible after serving half of maximum sentence. Bills passed in November: The House and Senate both passed habitual offender bills. Both bills rewrite the existing habitual-offender law and add a new section to the law. In other words, both bills provide two different ways to prosecute someone as an habitual offender. How bills would change ?3-strikes? law House bill ?Option 1 ? changes to existing law: ? Removes requirement that prior felony convictions must result in prison sentence of at least three years. A Tale of Two Massachusetts Millionaires
2012-01-23 12:45:00
From Howie Carr, Boston Herald: Mitt’s still got an 18-point lead in Florida, or did before last night’s Newt landslide. But he’s got to learn to lie better in these debates. That lame story of his about why he didn’t run for re-election in Massachusetts in 2006 was bad enough, but on the question of releasing his income tax returns, he squirmed like a gaffed fish. He was drowning in flop sweat. Why is Mitt ashamed of having a lot of money? If Newt, the born-again Catholic, can brush off his cheating past, how come Mitt can’t explain coherently why it’s OK to pay a 15 percent capital gains rate on money you’ve already paid the top 35 percent income tax rate on when you first earned it? Yes Mitt Romney is rich.   Then so is Massachusetts’ other playboy politician and one time presidential wanna be John “French” Kerry.   Frenchy never had to defend being filthy rich,  never apologized for making millions by marrying his first wife, then having  the...

Fall nor?easter hits Massachusetts and it?s coming down hard two hours in.
2011-10-29 23:46:00
UPDATE - 10:45am 10/30/2011: Wake up at 3am this morning without power and no heat (we have electric heat only). Spend the good part of the morning very cold and trying to sleep. However thankfully about 10 minutes ago, we got our power restored (National Grid).I?m surprised to say the least considering I heard a large tree fall next to the house, but not where powerlines are. We have about 6 inches on the ground of wet snow and several leaning trees with snow on them. But the sun is out and the snow is slowly melting especially on trees. We got lucky and now time for lunch and a hot shower.Original Article:For the last few days now up here in Massachusetts, meteorologists have been advising viewers that this latest Nor?easter could give the state several inches of snow (6-10 inches) and maybe some power outages. And I can tell you that when I went out early this morning to a local Walmart 15 minutes away, it looked like a madhouse with a lot of people trying to pickup supplies for t...

Thatsthepits.com is calling for NO Auto bailout and NO Massachusetts Gas Ta
2008-11-29 23:47:00
Normally it isn’t my cup of tea to write in this way, however right now in the United States including here in Massachusetts, the big story all over the US continues to be the economy and how it impacts each state. One huge issue is the Auto bailout, should the government bailout the Big Three or not?And if that wasn’t enough in this shaky economy, Massachusetts is now looking at a deficit in state money and they are trying to find new ways to increase revenue as well and one bad idea is increase the gas tax, should they?Well these are hot topics in my eyes, however right now I am still torn on the Big Three, on one hand, we need the big three for jobs and if they go out of business which is highly unlikely, lots of jobs and cars will be lost, so a government bailout might be needed, on the other hand, is any amount of money, $25 billion dollars for example going to really help at all, yeah maybe 25 days... Now I will say that GM needs to delete brands and rework there company, ...
