Money And Processions: Breaking Free From The Materialism Trap
2008-06-03 04:33:00
I was invited for a dinner by one of my friend?s last friday. Apart from the host, I didn?t know anyone there. I was left with no choice but to actually use some of the things I learned in The Winner?s Way! So there I was trying to make a liberated conversation. After some awkward moments of "Hi" and "What do you" I manage to strike conversation with a couple of people. I realized like me, they too were unknown to each other. Eventually our group got comfortable with each other. That?s when one guy brought up the subject of money. One subject that every one seemed to have an opinion about! He started out by making a witty remark about how low his salary was. Then everyone found the "me too" aspect of it, and was fueling the conversation. One person said that he would be happy if he could earn a salary, which would enable him to buy the things he wanted. For example, if he wanted 42 inch flat screen television, he should be in a comfortable position to buy that. Then another said, "If...

The best things in life aren't things. -Art BuchwaldThe sole perfection which modern civilization attains is a mechanical one; machines are splendid and flawless, but the life which serves them or is served by them, is neither superb nor brilliant, nor more perfect nor more graceful; nor is the work of the machines perfect; only they, the machines, are like gods.- Karel Capek, "Letters from England"Things are in the saddle,And ride mankind.Ralph Waldo Emerson. 1803-1882. Ode, inscribed to W. H. Channing. Most people seek after what they do not possess and are enslaved by the very things they want to acquire.... Anwar El-SadatWe talk about the American Dream, and want to tell the world about the American Dream, but what is that Dream, in most cases, but the dream of material things? Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.Romans 13:8Seems that these to have to go together, in that order. Owe nothing but love. Money, debt, holding someone else's debt; they all get in the way of unconditional love and put a damper on being able to show God's love through the finances He has blessed you with.I gotta get this "compartment" of my life under control. You all know this compartment, it's the one that enables you rationalize your spending habits, putting yourself and this world over Him. I can never fully praise Him with giving until I break free from the slavery of debt. Seems simple right...........hold on, I'll get back to you, got some Christmas shopping to do.Lord, break me.

The unthankful heart… discovers no mercies; but let the thankful heart sweep through the day and, as the magnet finds the iron, so it will find, in every hour, some heavenly blessings! -Henry Ward Beecher As I drove home from the second of our family?s Thanksgiving meals, I was struck by the fact that I hadn?t given thanks ...

Payments And Credit Aren?t Leading Us Anywhere Good

The Dialectic Rationalization Of Kabalistic Materialism: Johnny Oops
2007-10-01 15:40:00
Johnny woke up to a kind of adulation he could only have dreamed of in the past. The episode with God’s Hand lightening bolt had made him famous as a new prophet throughout Europe and the United States. In recognition of the ancient Jewish mystic benefits that his wife Sarhara had persuaded him had helped him become a recognized prophet, he added the name of their religion to his own. Sahara’s father, Rabbi Frenbren, was not sure whether this was to be taken as a blessing or a curse, and retreated into his library to study his ancient Kabala texts in hope of finding an answer. Johnny had no such doubts and returned to the United States, which awaited his arrival with great anticipation.Johnny said, “Look at that Sarhara, there are thousands of our followers waiting to greet us here at the airport. Isn’t this wonderful?”“Yes, yes, it is wonderful,” replied Sahara, tugging at his sleeve. “The people love you, but what do we next?”Johnny smiled and said, “I have a g...

If You Are Making Car Payments, You Don?t Own The Car
2007-09-18 05:59:00
We usually talk like we own the car, but this is just a delusion. If you secure financing for an automobile, the bank or financing company probably owns your car. The person with the auto loan is most likely granted non-possessory security interest in the vehicle. Basically, the bank owns the car ...

Materialism - circa 1976
2007-05-30 03:01:00
I recently picked up several excellent used books on consumerism and social justice. Dating from the sixties and seventies, these works have actually grown more relevant in the decades since they were written. Here are some excerpts from "Good News For Rich and Poor" by Harvey Seifert (United Church Press, 1976), with my updates in italics:Except for a few obviously lethal items, we commonly assume that it is morally acceptable to buy whatever we can afford. Now we are recognizing the limited resources of the earth. It is becoming increasingly clear that if we continue to maintain the same material standard of living we have had in the past, we will condemn others to starvation. This is as certain a source of death as is shooting. Under present world conditions, the level of consumer demand in industrialized countries is immoral. (73)From 1979 to 1995, per capita consumer spending in the United States increased between 30% and 70%, depending on which measurement tool is used. (from ...
Rampant Materialism

Stuff I don't need and can't really afford right now, but made my greedy little inner child drool with envy and throw a temper tantrum: A door organizer. Actually, I don't need one of these, since I carry a backpack around. I just think it's looks cool. [Via Gizmodo.] Did I mention that I need an external hard drive? I think I just found one. The Lacie 1TB Ethernet Big Disk External Hard Drive, for only $290. [Via Gizmodo.] Oh, how I drooled over the new Blackberry Curve. Drooled, I tell you. Finally, Blackberry makes a proper PDA phone with a full-sized keyboard, digital camera, microSD slot and audio and video capabilities. [Via Endgadget.]OK, the feeling has passed. I just looked in my wallet.technorati tags: Blackberry Curve, door organizer, LaCie, Gizmodo, Endgadget, stuff
Spiritual Materialism and the Sacraments of Consumerism: A View from Thaila
2007-04-24 19:55:00
Phra Phaisan Visalo, the author of the article quoted here is a Buddhist Monk from Thailand and in this article focuses on how the distinction between religious faith and consumerism is becoming increasingly vague these days. His observations although focus on Buddhist faith, specially in the Thai context, but it has much food for thought for other traditions as well. The Spiritual Materialism may not necessarily take form as buying precious Buddha statues or protective lockets with imaginary deity but can come in many other sympotoms depending on the context of faith or tradition we are talking about.i have seen this specially sick tendency of religious materialism in terms of consumerism in a very naked form in Indian Subcontinent among Muslim community when it comes to the Festival of Sacrifice (Eid-ul-Adha). Rich people will go to buy animals (generally cow or sheeps) of very high price (neglecting the poor in the neighbourhood or society in need) and there are huge competition, ...
Materialism: Circular Reasoning
2007-01-04 13:26:01
Once again, we are in debt to the world’s best I.D. web-site, OverwhelmingEvidence.com. Today’s article is re-published by kind permission of OE’s guest blogger Henrietta Lacks. You can find the original version of this article, back at OE.com OverwhelmingEvidence.com is the best site for serious discussion of the exciting science of Intelligent Design. This is the ID site that anybody can contribute to, just register and you can post your own articles. Spread the good news about God’s creation today! I agree with the OverwhelmingEvidence.com blogger Helena Blavatsky who suggested that the Darwinists’ weak-spot is their addiction to scientific-naturalism, otherwise known as the ?materialist assumption? - the nihilistic conjecture that the only things worth thinking about are the mundane. I concur that we have to show the flaws in materialism if we are to engage the scientific community and show the folly of evolutionary dogma, but what shall we repla...
Metamaterialism
2006-11-14 11:00:05
I can just see the signs now: Be alert (but not alarmed), invisible missiles ahead. Though I shudder at the thought of invisible military operations, the development of “metamaterial” cloaks, which can render objects invisible by making light flow around and past them, would certainly make surprise parties more interesting. What other applications could come from this? Up close animal documentaries? Invincible martial artists? Street salesmen you can’t dodge? Leave your suggestions. Science tripping the light fantasticIan Sample, LondonOctober 21, 2006 IT WON’T help you sneak around Hogwarts without being seen, but scientists have unveiled the world’s first cloaking device, a technology designed to make solid objects disappear. Cloaking devices are coveted by the military, which can see a new age of stealth technology that hides planes and other vehicles from radar. More advanced versions could ultimately be good enough to make objects or people invis...
