Matra MS1 bringing the price of Human/Electric bikes down, kind of.
2007-10-01 10:10:00
Over the past few years we've seen more and more electric motorcycles coming to light and while they have been seen running upward of 10k$ in some cases it's nice to see some change, ok so the cost of the latest from Matra isn't exactly chump change coming in at more than most vacation home rental's even cost. Now the Matra MS1 looks more like a bicycle and less like a Harley not to mention the fact that this isn't a Electric engine only bike as it also has pedals to allow for a little leg driven backup power in case the 62 mile drive distance isn't enough for you between recharges. Not to mention this is the first bike like this that I have seen to date that also has regenerative brakes that will pull power back into the battery as you apply breaks just like high end cars. Now I find this most interesting because of places like where I live that are very hilly I could burn battery going uphill and then ride the brake on the way back down, and while this isn't 100% efficien...
Paris Motor Show: Matra MS1-Electric Motorcycle
2007-10-01 05:55:00
You may never have heard of the French automotive company Matra. You've probably seen some of their designs and cars that they have built for other companies such as Renault, though. For instance, the strange and strangely popular Renault Espace minivan was initially made by Matra for Renault. They also have a rather successful history of racing, in Formula 1, Formula 2 and at Le Mans. The moped-like bike you see above and here in our gallery seems to be from the same company, although they do not produce cars anymore. The bike is electric and also allows for pedaling. The range of 60 miles or so could be increased with human power. Although limited to a bit less than 30 miles per hour, the bike can likely go faster, but it would lose out on being considered a moped and therefore would require a motorcycle license. This electric bike should be available for sale in Europe in the not-too-distant future, but no word on whether it'll make it to the States. Interesting features of thi...

The Matra MS1 Electric Bike
2007-09-29 16:04:00
Here is am electric bicycle, which actually looks like something you would be seen on. The Matra MS1?s electric motor is supposedly good for 62 miles and a top speed restricted to 28mph. The motor is also charged when or if the brakes are applied. If you eventually run out of juice, the standard pedals will keep you going. No word on when or if this will hit production, but if it does it won?t be that cheap.Source: Engadget

Four dead in Sumatra quake
2007-09-13 02:33:00
A SEVERE earthquake shook Indonesia's Sumatra region, destroying buildings, killing four people and injuring 21 in a toll experts said was sure to rise. The 8.4 magnitude earthquake, which was also felt in neighbouring Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia last night, caused extensive damage to buildings along Sumatra's coast, officials said. Some buildings had collapsed in Padang, the capital of West Sumatra north of the tremor's epicentre, witnesses reported, while Metro TV said some buildings had caught fire."The city is in complete chaos. Everyone is heading to higher ground, I saw one house collapsed to the ground. I'm trying to save my family," said a witness in Padang. David Oppenheimer, a scientist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park, California, said the death toll could well rise as authorities take stock of the impact.A quake with an eight magnitude typically led to partial collapse of buildings, houses moved off their foundations, and other damage, he said."That'...

Save The Sumatran Rhinos
2007-08-19 07:49:00
Our team would like to share with you about a very special group of animals that currently is in need of protection from harm. They are the Sumatran rhinos. The Sumatran rhinos are one out of five species of rhinos that still exist in the animal kingdom. Sadly, the population has been gradually diminishing since a few decades ago because of deforestation. To date, there are only less than 300 of them that are still surviving in the outskirts of Malaysia and Indonesia. They are now deemed as Malaysia’s most endangered species of animals, and the world’s most endangered species of rhinos. In view of the danger that has been lurking behind the Sumatran rhinos for too long, Honda and WWF-Malaysia have collaborated to kick off a five-year project called ‘Rhino Rescue Project’, where funds will be raised to provide the rhinos with as much protection as possible. With HMSB’s oath to donate RM5 million to this project, WWF will be able to liaise with its associates to substantiate it...

Indonesia firefighters battle forest fires on Sumatra island
2007-07-18 15:08:00
Firefighters battled dozens of land-clearing blazes in western Indonesia on Wednesday, officials said, as thick clouds of choking haze spread across parts of the region. Donny Osmon, the head of the local firefighting agency, said farmers and agricultural companies began setting the fires on Sumatra island on Sunday, at the start of the dry season, to clear brush and peat land. Haze from forest fires has become a major problem for large parts of Southeast Asia over the last 10 years and is a source of tension with Malaysia and Singapore, where air quality levels are drastically worsened because of the smoke.
Camera trap from WWF photographs Sumatran tiger
2007-07-12 15:34:00
A WWF camera trap set up in an Indonesian national park has photographed an endangered Sumatran tiger that appears to have escaped from a snare. Digital photos captured by WWF?s camera trap inside Tesso Nilo National Park in central Sumatra show a male tiger missing the lower half of his right front leg. WWF staff suspect this tiger is the same individual reported caught in a snare in November 2006, which they believe scratched or cut his paw off, to escape. The Sumatran tiger appears to be in good physical condition. The Sumatran tiger is the most critically endangered tiger subspecies in the world, with fewer than 400 Sumatran tigers left in the wild.Earlier: Three-legged Sumatran tiger caught on camera ...
Sumatran tiger kills child in Indonesia
2007-07-06 01:37:00
One of Sumatra?s endangered tigers has mauled a 10-year-old boy to death and injured a second child who tried to help him during the attack on the jungle-clad island, police said yesterday. The boy died in the attack on Wednesday at a coffee plantation at the rim of a forest in Bengkulu province, while his friend was severely injured, Maslan, a local police officer, said by telephone. He said that a team from the provincial forestry office and Nature Conservation Agency had gone to the site to try to capture the beast. The head of the NCA in Bengkulu, Yohanes Sudarto, told the state-run Antara news agency that three tigers - an adult male and female and their cub - had often been sighted by residents in the area. His office estimates that some 50 tigers remain in Bengkulu?s forests.
Three-legged Sumatran tiger caught on camera in Indonesian park
2007-07-05 11:14:00
A camera trap inside Indonesia's Tesso Nilo National Park in Riau province has captured photographs of a Sumatran tiger in the wild that appears to have escaped from a snare by chewing its paw off, the World Wildlife Fund said (WWF) Thursday. 'Four pictures captured by WWFs camera trap in March inside the national park in Central Sumatra show a male tiger missing the lower half of his right front leg,' according to a report received by Deutsche Prese-Agentur dpa. The same tiger was photographed again in a different location in May 2007 walking in the forest. On both occasions, the tiger appeared to be in good physical condition. WWF staff suspect this was the same tiger caught in a snare trap in November 2006 but scratched or cut its paw off to escape, leaving part of his leg behind.
171 hotspots in Sumatra
2007-07-02 02:28:00
The number of hotspots in Sumatra has almost doubled within 24 hours, signalling the onset of the forest-burning season in Indonesia which inevitably shrouds Malaysia in a haze. According to Meteorological Services Department environmental studies director Lim Sze Fook, satellite images showed 171 hotspots in Sumatra as at 2.58pm yesterday compared to 91 at 3.05pm on Saturday.?Satellite images also showed five hotspots in Peninsular Malaysia on Sunday (yesterday) compared to none on Friday.?Out of the five hotspots, two were in south-west Selangor,? he added.Lim said that the wind over the peninsula and Sumatra would continue to blow mainly from the south and southwest bringing the haze to Malaysia together with it.?This wind speed (5-15kph) and direction is not expected to change significantly over the next 24 hours,? he said.

This is Joan Armatrading. Yesterday night she played the Amsterdam Paradiso. The picture kinda shocked me. What happened to the vital young women that stood on the covers of legendary albums like Me Myself I or the odd cover of her first A&M compilation Track Record with her standing on the piano. I'm afraid that woman is almost gone for good. In some songs there was a glimpse of what she once was capable of, but most of them lacked it completely. I think that's why her new album is called: Into the Blues. Joan's got the blues and she's got it bad.

Sumatran cuckoo rediscovered after century
2007-04-14 09:23:00
A Sumatran ground cuckoo brought great delight to Indonesian ornithologists when it was recently rediscovered in Lampung, Sumatra's southernmost province, after the rare bird had been mistakenly declared extinct for over a century. The protected Carpoccocyx viridis species, locally called tokhtor, was not detected in its native Sumatran forest habitat by means of camera traps. Instead, it was found by surveyors of the Wildlife Conservation Society-Indonesia Program (WCS-IP) in mid-January at the house of a bird trader in West Lampung. The bird had suffered an injury to its leg when it was snared. The cuckoo has now been relocated to the society's Way Canguk research station for rehabilitation before it is released. The rediscovery of the captured tokhtor followed several reports from local residents on sightings received by WCS-IP researchers in Bukit Barisan National Park (TNBBS), West Lampung. Staffers from the WCS-IP Way Canguk station in Lampung responded by conducting more in-d...

Bonus! Schilling vs. Dumatrait
2007-03-18 22:58:00
The bonus in Red Sox minor league camp on Sunday was getting to see a showdown you’d only think could happen in bizarro world–Curt Schilling vs. Reds lefthander Phil Dumatrait. “Definitely an adrenaline rush,” Dumatrait said. An adrenaline rush that had an obvious affect on the 25-year-old (and Red Sox 2000 first-rounder). “He was impressive,” Red Sox pitching coach John Farrell said. “Good velocity, good location, good composure and he repeated his delivery well. Nice arm.” The brief rundown on Schilling: full six innings, 98 pitches in all. “He threw a sim(ulated) game five days ago and watching him is really something,” Farrell said. “He approaches everything like it’s the seventh game of the World Series. The work ethic is phenomenal. He’s ready to go.” So, apparently is Reds outfielder Jay Bruce, who took Schilling deep to the opposite field, and hit the ball hard all day in front of a host of R...
