Chicago Cubs Weekend Headlines: Wither Matt Garza News?
2010-12-11 18:14:00 Photo courtesy Chicago Tribune Cubs fans got a chance to say goodbye to Ron Santo yesterday, as everyone's favorite third baseman made one last trip to Wrigley Field. FAns could be seen running alongside the car as Ronnie drove through Wrigleyville, and the crowd at the corner of Clark & Addison broke into a rousing rendition of "Take Me Out To the Ball Game" as the car circled Wrigley. With that said,I've completely hit the wall when it comes to talking about Ronnie's passing and funeral. It's just too sad. But if you missed any part of the funeral or trip up to Wrigley, you can view a lot of is online here. ...
Matt Garza no hits Detroit
2010-07-27 03:53:00 Matt Garza has become the fifth pitcher in the 2010 MLB season to toss a no hitter. The Tampa Bay Rays pitcher allowed one base runner and face the minimum 27 batter against the solid hitting Detroit Tigers. This was the first no-hitter in the short history of the Rays and allows them to keep ...

Matt Garza Traded For Delmon Young In Blockbuster
2007-11-29 04:10:00 UPDATE, 11-28-07 at 9pm: It's now a done deal. The Twins substituted 21 year-old reliever Eduardo Morlan instead of Rincon. UPDATE, 11-28-07 at 7:30pm: This thing hasn't gone through yet because of concerns over Rincon's elbow. The deal will either be finalized or killed by Thursday, according to Scott Miller. The trade has been in the works for a few days. UPDATE, 11-28-07 at 4pm: Neal reports that the Twins have interest in Aaron Rowand, which is really surprising given his reported demands. I don't see it. Neal adds that Craig Monroe may now be non-tendered and the Garza trade will not stop Bill Smith from shopping Johan Santana. By the way, talks for Coco Crisp persist. FROM 11-28-07 at 2pm: Wow! That rumor really didn't die! La Velle E. Neal III says the Twins are close to a multiplayer deal. They'll send Matt Garza, Jason Bartlett, and Juan Rincon to the Rays for Delmon Young, Brendan Harris, and Jason Pridie. I...

Mlb Trade Rumor: Delmon Young For Matt Garza Etc.
2007-11-28 23:14:00 Yesterday, there were grumblings that Twins pitcher Boof Bonser was being dealt to Tampa Bay. This morning's Tampa papers had articles that reported Rays' GM Andrew Friedman saying the team is ready to begin competing. In Minnesota, the team opened two spots on their 40-man roster. Now, LaVelle E. Neal III of the Minnesapolis Star-Tribune is reporting a trade between the Twins and Rays is near completion, and it is a blockbuster. The Rays would receive hard-throwing RHP Matt Garza along with SS Jason Bartlett and middle reliever Juan Rincon in exchange for RF Delmon Young, utility man Brendan Harris and AAA OF Jason Pridie. Young and Harris would fill the same roles they filled in Tampa Bay, and Pridie would have a clear shot at OF ABs where he had been blocked in Tampa Bay. Garza would slot behind Scott Kazmir and James Shields with Jason Bartlett taking over the starting SS job. Juan Rincon would become a key late-inning reliever on a team absolutel...

Twins Willing To Trade Garza
2007-11-08 16:48:00 Terry Ryan hung on to his fine corral of young pitchers, and it's hard to find fault with that. However, new GM Bill Smith is open to dealing one of them for a high impact young hitter. Specifically, Joe Christensen says the Twins are willing to move 24 year-old Matt Garza, who posted a 3.69 ERA this year. The price would be huge - the names the Twins have in mind are Delmon Young, B.J. Upton, and Carlos Gomez. Upton, a favorite of theirs, seems like the least available of the three. Marc Topkin agrees that a Young-Garza rumor has been floating around. If the Twins want to make a lesser deal, teams have also been asking about Kevin Slowey and Scott Baker. But those two aren't chopped liver, and Rocco Baldelli doesn't seem like enough. The Padres want in on the young pitchers, but aren't willing to give up third baseman Chase Headley. There's also word in Christensen's article that the Twins haven't heard back from Torii Hunter and Ca...

Mets Rumors: A-Rod, Kim, Silva, Kuroda
2007-11-08 16:06:00 Plenty of new hot stove talk involving the Mets. Let's get into it. First off, there's the fact that Omar Minaya met with Scott Boras yesterday. Minaya says he talked to Boras about all the players he represents. Besides Mr. Rodriguez, Eric Gagne, Byung-Hyun Kim, Kenny Rogers, and Kyle Lohse may be considerations for the Mets. Indeed, there is some buzz that the Mets could bring Kim in to compete for a rotation spot. So what about A-Rod? He'd cost the Mets a ton of money, plus the #22 overall pick in the 2008 draft. It sounds like the Mets may hear Boras out as a courtesy, and even put in an offer they feel is reasonable. That number might fall far short of what it will take, as did theirs for Daisuke Matsuzaka and Barry Zito a year ago. That said, Mets insiders aren't afraid of the full retail price of Rodriguez. The top priority remains pitching. Carlos Silva, Tom Glavine, Hiroki Kuroda, and A.J. Burnett are on the radar....

More on Jason Bay to the Twins
2007-10-27 17:13:00 Yesterday, Joe Nathan said his re-signing was contingent on the Twins remaining competitive. Today, Jake at Bucco Blog discusses a rumor to that fact: The Twins' interest in Jason Bay is real and hinges on whether or not they retain Torii Hunter. Tim breaks it down here. Hunter wants 5/75. The Twins are offering 3/45. If the they are serious about retaining him and Hunter in fact wants to stay then that discrepancy doesn't seem insurmountable. However, if Hunter leaves... Jason Bay had a down year (.248/.328/.420) and yet almost certain to be dealt by new Pirates co-GM's Neil Huntington and Bill Smith this winter. Shipping Bay is a launch pad for restructuring the Pirates' system. Tim notes the viability of a Bay for Matt Garza deal. He's signed for a mere $5.75MM in '08 and an only slightly less mere $7.5MM in '09, so the Twins would have no financial qualms if Hunter walks. Posted by Nat Boyle

The Future On Display
2007-06-22 20:01:00 The rosters for the 2007 Futures Game, played during All-Star weekend, have been announced and fans of every Major League team will have a chance to see the best their organization has to offer. The youngest player chosen is World team member and pitcher Deolis Guerra, a Mets farmhand who just turned 18 in April. The oldest is Freddy Sandoval, a third baseman in the Angels farm system who turns 25 August. He is also a member of the World team. The U.S. team is stacked with players from recent drafts, and fans should be familiar with many of them.2005 looks like it will become a fruitful draft, as all five of the U.S. team's outfielders were first round picks that year. The outfield is made up of prospects Colby Rasmus (Cardinals), Jay Bruce (Reds), Jacob Ellsbury (Red Sox), Cameron Maybin (Tigers), and 2005 first overall pick Justin Upton (Diamondbacks). Other notable U.S. players are third baseman Evan Longoria (Devil Rays) and pitchers Clayton Kershaw (Dodgers), Matt Garza (Twi...
Matt Garza Expendable in Mark Teixeira Dealings
2007-06-16 01:29:00 It's be a bit harsh to label hard-throwing Twins prospect Matt Garza uncoachable, but clearly his resistence to developing off-speed offerings has cost him not only a promotion to The Bigs but perhaps some friends in the Minnesota organization.Garza -- who throws in the mid-90s -- has pitched reasonably well for the Triple A Rochester Red Wings, but has had moderate control problems, blaming them on the coaching staff' pestering him to improve his change-up and other off-speed pitches. The 23-year-old Garza prefers to do things his way, an attitude that would make him a very expendable but still valuable in any potential dealings for a Twins upgrade at third base.In one of the Twins versions of the myriad scenarios for the trade of slugging first baseman Mark Teixeira by the Texas Rangers, Teixeira is envisioned going to the Boston Red Sox, allowing Kevin Youkilis to move to third base, Mike Lowell and cash to be shipped to the Twins and a Garza and other top Twins prospects to go ...

Matt Garza Passed Over, Again! GOOD!
2007-06-01 19:32:00 I love it when loud mouthed punks get passed over for opportunities. Matt Garza is the latest of those whining babies in baseball that believe they “deserve” the opportunity more than his teammates. Maybe if Garza were a better teammate/employee, he wouldn’t have been passed over three times this season for a callup to the big club. Glen Perkins, Scott Baker, and now Kevin Slowey will get a much deserved call to pitch for the Twins tonight - all over Matt Garza reportedly because he hasn’t shut his mouth since being sent to AAA following spring training. Here’s the link to the full article, but I’ll pull out some of the famous quotes he’s spat to his teammates, coaches and Terry Ryan himself that has kept him held back. Garza, 2-4 with a 3.49 earned run average in nine starts for Rochester, N.Y., said he complied with the Twins’ instructions and his results have suffered because of it. Now, Garza said, he’s going back to throwing...

Twins SP Matt Garza Sloughs Off Injury as Minor
2007-03-07 10:35:02 Twins starting pitcher Matt Garza has told trainers he is ready, willing and able to pitch, despite discomfort in his neck. But the team is taking no chances, holding him out of action to undergo examinations, tests, rest and mild rehabilitative excercises while awaiting results of an anti-inflammatory drug regimen. With any luck, Garza likely will have recovered within 10 days as the strain is not considered serious enough to cause him to see consulting specialists off site. He is under the care of team physicians John Steubs and Dan Buss, plus the training staff."We're taking care of him here," a team spokesman at the Fort Myers clubhouse confirmed for www.MLBnewsonline.com.Garza, whose condition has been described as a common somatic disorder, is ticketed to be the No. 4 starter behind ace Johan Santana, Carlos Silva and Boof Bonser. He has felt discomfort at the neck at the base of the cranium, causing stress when he throws or looks toward the plate while straddling the mound.Wh...

Matt Garza - MLB Rookie?
2007-02-06 04:20:02 I have to thank Keith Law (Scouts, Inc/ESPN) for tipping me to this one, but it left me digging for more. I pulled up Matt Garza's line from last year and it reads like this:Games = 10 IP = 50.0 H=62 R=33 ER=32 W=3 L=6 ERA=5.76A quick search on MLB.com and I found this:Determining rookie status: A player shall be considered a rookie unless, during a previous season or seasons, he has (a) exceeded 130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched in the Major Leagues; or (b) accumulated more than 45 days on the active roster of a Major League club or clubs during the period of 25-player limit (excluding time in the military service and time on the disabled list). And there in all that legal mumble jumble rules language lies one very important word, "exceeded". The fact that Garza only went 2.2 innings in his last outing, a loss to the White Sox, l... |
