UFC 85, Matt Hughes vs Thaigo Alves, Bisping vs Day, Swick vs Davis and Mor
2008-06-06 21:12:00
What a month for MMA, first UFC 84, then EliteXC featuring Kimbo Slice, then WEC Faber vs Pulver and now UFC 85, something new each week, does it get better than this? Get your video recorder out, UFC 85 is coming through with a stacked fight card.  In my opinion, the main event isn’t so outstanding, however, the other fights for the night are.  The fight card for the night is: Matt Hughes vs Thiago Alves Michael Bisping vs Jason Day Marcus Davis vs Mike Swick (Insane!) Nate Marquardt vs Thales Leites Brand Vera vs Fabricio Werdium (awesome!) Jorge Rivera vs Martin Kampmann Matt Wiman vs Thiago Tavares (sweet) Ryo Chonan vs Roan Carneiro Luiz Cane vs Jason Lambert Paul Taylor vs Jess Liaudin (Taylor can bang!) Antoni Hardonk vs Eddie Sanchaz (Eddite, watch the legs, he’s gonna chop!) It’s going to be an awesome night of fights… the UFC keeps bringing it.

MATT HUGHES VS MATT SERRA CONFIRMED
2008-06-04 20:19:00
MATT HUGHES VS MATT SERRA CONFIRMED Matt Hughes has confirmed that he will be fighting Matt "the terra" Serra, win, lose or draw, after his fight with Thiago Alves. The UFC has apparently given the fight it's blessing according to MMA madness and the fight will take place either UFC 89 or 90 - sometime in October or November. If Hughes is able to win both fights, he will be given another welterweight title shot against G.S.P. This fight has been brewing since Serra and Hughes were team captains on the successful TV show "The Ultimate Fighter." Matt Serra who recently lost to G.S.P will want to get back to willing ways and will no doubtable voice publically his hatred for Matt Hughes. The fight promises to have plenty of smack talk and hype leading up to it.Hughes also stated during the week that his brother has signed a contact with the UFC agreeing that he will not fight for any other organisations. Matt Hughes refused to comment any further on the situation.Sourc...

Matt Hughes, Robbie Lawler, Matt Pena and Marc Fiore open a new gym together called Hit Squad in Granite City, IL. From the photos on the Hit Squad website, the place looks very impressive. Here’s a little bit about it from their website: “H.I.T. The center’s purpose is education through weight training, boxing, and martial arts. H.I.T. Matt Hughes on trial with Liverpool
2008-01-16 15:20:00
Despite being only 15 years old he has already impressed in Rochdales academy & reserve teams. The defender is extremely highly rated, possessing excellent leadership qualities & fantastic all round attitude. One of the things I really like about Rafa is his determination to chase down top youth talent and build something akin to what Wenger has done with Arsenal. While I hope Matty Hughes trial is a success, I doubt we'll sign him for another couple of years (until he's eligible to sign professional forms).
The Lighter Side Of The UFC
2008-01-03 08:59:00
I?ve always been fascinated by the UFC?s dichotomy between violence and comedy. For a sport that was born from two men beating the snot out of each other, there certainly are some funny things that go down in and out of the Octagon. As we catch our breath from UFC 67 and gear up for UFC 68, I thought it would be a welcome departure to look at some of the UFC?s funniest moments. With so many to choose from, I?ve tried to narrow down my choices to the five that can still make me laugh. A timeless article (from last year) by MMA Mania's Jesse Holland.5. Go with the KenFloKenny Florian, despite his talent, gets quite a bit of heat from UFC fans. I?m sure it has a lot to do with his stint on The Ultimate Fighter, an experience that can vault you into the main event of a pay-per-view while simultaneously branding you with a Scarlet Letter. Most of the gags are cheap and childish, like the comparisons to Ben Stiller and Kevin Richardson from The Backstreet Boys. There does exist however,...
UFC 79 Analysis
2008-01-02 19:24:00
The UFC 79 card was definitely exciting, but what exactly does it mean for the UFC and its fighters? Ben Zeidler examines the subject.Liddell is back!Chuck Liddell is back in full force, utterly dominating Wanderlei Silva for three straight rounds. Sure, he didn't knock The Axe Murderer out cold, but the performance was solid enough to declare The Iceman officially on the rebound from his Rampage loss earlier this year.St. Pierre takes the crownGeorges St. Pierre beat Hughes with the very move he was beaten by more than two years ago. In doing this, he established himself as the clear top Welterweight and looks to be steamrolling towards avenging the Serra loss.Sokoudjou NOT the real deal, Machida is though...The aura surrounding Sokoudjou's two quick knockouts earlier this year was dispelled as Machida showed the extent of his ability in a dominant submission victory. UFC 79: George St. Pierre vs Matt Hughes Betting Odds and Analysis
2007-12-21 17:58:00
Best Odds: Hughes (+190 BetUS) St. Pierre (-200 Bodog). When was the last time Matt Hughes was a 2 to 1 underdog....never. The question is have the books picked this one right and are just using odds to tempt the public money, or will the corn picker return to glory?Matt Hughes is self admittedly nearing the end of his career and looking to this as his big redemption fight, which in his mind will lead to him retiring in a blaze of glory. Nine months out from his last fight with Chris Lytle, Matt has had a very long build up toward his next fight. Up until a month ago he thought he was training for Serra in what he viewed as an easily winnable fight. Now he finds himself facing his Nemasis, the man who dealt him possibly the biggest loss of his career. No matter how mature Hughes is as a fighter that always plays a roll in the mental battle of this game. Hughes has stated what he sees as his advantages in this fight; the shortened training time for St. Pierre, his strength, and his do...

Georges St. Pierre Interview

Irish Whip Fighting writer Ben Zeidler caught up with former UFC welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre last week, discussing everything from the Matt Serra loss to the upcoming UFC 79 fight with Matt Hughes. Originally conducted for MMA Madness.Irish Whip Fighting: Can you tell us a little bit about the Serra fight and what happened?St. Pierre: You know, it was a great learning experience. I didn?t realize it when he hit me and next thing I knew, he was on top of me and it was over.IWF: Was he what you prepared for?St. Pierre: I don?t want to make any excuses. I made many mistakes coming into the fight but the real reason I lost is because Matt fought the better fight.IWF: How would you fight him differently next time?St. Pierre: I would change a lot of things. I?m working on my game like it?s a puzzle and it is all coming together. My personal life is going well, I?m in great shape. It will be a different story.IWF: Your first fight against Matt Hughes saw you tapping out to an ar...

Window Of Opportunity For St. Pierre, Hughes
2007-12-16 20:57:00
Matt Hughes and Georges St. Pierre gained a unique window of opportunity for the Welterweight Championship when Matt Serra suffered a training injury to his lower back. I.W.F made the correct prediction for UFC President Dana White to schedule Hughes-St. Pierre III rubber match, giving both men the opportunity to end the trilogy and win the championship. Hughes-St. Pierre III will be an explosive battle with contrasting styles -- it's a battle which has resulted in a different outcome each time. At UFC 50, Hughes defeated St. Pierre in the first round with a slick armbar submission to win the vacant Welterweight Championship. At UFC 65, St. Pierre defeated Hughes in the second round with a brutal and decisive TKO. In this, the finale, which fighter will execute their game plan better? An IWF original by Don DavenportHughes stated on "The Ultimate Fighter Finale" that "I would not have taken this fight unless I thought I was going to win. I have enough time to prepare for Georges ...

UFC 79 To Feature Hughes-GSP III For Interim
2007-11-25 18:21:00
Exactly one day BEFORE the announcement of the Hughes-St. Pierre Interim Title fight, IWF reported the following: "If I were White, I would consider holding Hughes-St. Pierre III now, with the winner receiving a title shot. Hughes and St. Pierre will fight each other again soon enough, so it could make sense to get it out of the way now." Dana White must read IWF, because hours later, the blockbuster was booked. In the UFC, when one door closes, another opens, and on December 29th, that adage will ring true once against when Matt Hughes battles Georges St. Pierre for the interim UFC Welterweight Championship in the main event of UFC 79: Nemesis, at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.St-Pierre replaces UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Serra, who was forced to withdraw from his bout with Hughes last week due to a herniated disc in his back.?Obviously, the loss of Matt Serra was brutal, but the great thing about the UFC is that we can put together great fights like Hugh...

Matt Hughes versus Matt Serra UFC 79 Fight Off!
2007-11-24 20:45:00
According to a recent UFC announcement, Matt Serra sustained an injury earlier this week in training for his upcoming UFC 79 fight against Matt Hughes.  While training at his Long Island NY gym, Serra fell to his knees in excruciating pain and was rushed to the hospital.  Serra suffered a herniated disc in his lower back - for those of you who are unfamiliar with this type of injury, the pain can be crippling - especially if it’s pinches the sciatic nerve. “This is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do,” said Serra. “I’ve never had a back injury before; I could hardly get off the MRI table. There is no way I can train through this, and I’m devastated, especially because this was such an important fight. I was looking forward to fighting Matt Hughes. All my training was going phenomenally until Monday – All I can do now is to get better and to fight again as soon as possible.” Chuck Liddell vs. Wanderlei Silva will still be on for UFC 79.  As for a replacemen...

Serra Pulls Out Of UFC 79
2007-11-23 14:48:00
Due to herniated discs from a training injury, Matt Serra has been forced to pull out of his upcoming bout with former champ Matt Hughes.Serra was involved in a routine training regiment when he fell to the floor in pain. Later MRIs revealed the herniated discs in his lower back. ?This is the hardest thing I?ve ever had to do,? said Serra. ?I?ve never had a back injury before; I could hardly get off of the MRI table. There is no way I can train through this, and I?m devastated, especially because this was such an important fight. I was looking forward to fighting Matt Hughes. All my training was going phenomenally until Monday ? All I can do now is to get better and to fight again as soon as possible.?Hopefully, White will book a Welterweight contender against Hughes as to keep Hughes busy and not diminish the excellent star quality of this December card. If I were White, I would consider holding Hughes-St. Pierre III now, with the winner receiving a title shot. Hughes and St. Pi...

By Matt Hughes With Tommy Speer?s win this week, I?ve broken the curse, so to speak, and it feels great, and I really feel like I?ve got two quality guys (Speer and Mac Danzig) in the quarterfinals. I?m heavily outnumbered, but I really like my guys. They?re not just fill-ins, they?re quality fighters. Tommy Speer comes from the mold I came from. I was a wrestler that liked to impose my will and use my strength, and that?s what Tommy does. He imposes his will, uses his strength, and there?s no quit in Tommy whatsoever. I did have to get Tommy to show more emotion this week, and even though I?m a poker face when I fight, I?m not just out there doing moves, and if I can use J-Roc (Jared Rollins) as an example, he was a guy out there who looked like he was out there just throwing punches and doing moves. I think if he would have shown a little more emotion and a little more dedication and a little bit more heart, he would have went out there and realized that he wasn?t winning on hi...
Matt Hughes: Training and iAmplify Video Shoot. - 06 Nov 2007 01:17:21pm
2007-11-06 14:17:00
By Matt Hughes This will be my first week of intense training, I?ll train here at home. I?ve got quite a few guys coming to town to train for their fights and they?ll help me out as well. I?ll post a list of who those fighters are next week. This past weekend, a film crew came to town and we did a download project for iAmplify and had a great time. I got along with everybody on the set and we used an old building here in Hillsboro, so it was just a really good time. The video is basically going to be my workout just really watered down for the general public. It?s not really designed for fighters, just average people looking to get in shape. I?ll have more information on that later. This weekend, I?m doing an appearance at Dale?s Harley Davidson, down in Mt. Vernon, Saturday, November 10th from 2-4 PM. It?s a benefit for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) and the actual benefit is from 7 PM to midnight at the Holiday Inn Banquet Room. Proceeds for everything benefit the M...

By Matt Hughes I was pretty frustrated with all the losses we?ve taken so far. I don?t know if I was ready to walk away because, kinda like I said on the show, anybody can quit. It takes a man to stay in someplace when he doesn?t want to be there. I wasn?t gonna quit, but I wanted to express to my team that they need to shape up and that they need to start giving it 100 percent. Some of them were quiet when I spoke to them, but I did feel that I was getting a hold of them and I felt like I was doing my job as a coach, I really did. Mac Danzig wasn?t too happy with the way I was coming down on the team, and he expressed that on this week?s show. I?m glad that Mac has his own opinion and I think he did a heck of a job on this show being a teammate. After watching this episode, I?m really happy with Mac. I could care less that he didn?t understand what I was doing; that doesn?t bother me a bit. What I was glad to see was that he was there for his team, and I was glad to see that tran...
Matt Hughes: My Thoughts on Randy Couture. - 30 Oct 2007 12:20:37pm
2007-10-30 13:20:00
By Matt Hughes Well I?ve been tapering off of farm work and training more and more now that the fight?s getting closer, but I know you all have been waiting to hear my thoughts on Randy leaving the UFC, so here we go. I don?t know exactly what is going through Randy?s head, I haven?t talked to him, nor have I talked to Dana White about this situation. However, I somewhat agree with Randy. A couple of years ago, the UFC was a much smaller organization and I knew everybody that worked for them. When I wanted something, I knew who to call and who would get it done. I miss that. Nowadays, it seems like new employees of the UFC call me everyday. The problem was they got so big so fast they had to get more workers. So now it?s just a much bigger organization and things are a lot different. Dana doesn?t know all that goes on over there. It seems like he?s off doing his own thing. So I?m sure that a lot of what Randy is mad about, Dana has nothing to do with. A lot of times the UFC will ...

Below is a complete transcript of the interview, which was conducted on Wednesday, October 24, 2007. By Matt Hughes We?re down in this competition so far, and in looking back at the shows each week, I definitely try to learn from my mistakes. When I?m saying stuff, a lot of times it just comes out of my mouth, but now that I can sit back and watch myself be a cornerman, I can say ?well, maybe I should have said more of this or that.? So I?m trying to be better, but in the heat of the fight, when I?m yelling at Dan Barrera like I did this week, I was mad, and I think that comes across in the tone of my voice. Dan was up this week to fight Ben Saunders, and I rolled with Dan after he was getting out of hand a bit in practice. I just needed him to calm down because he?s gonna get somebody hurt, and it could be him or somebody with a fight coming up. A lot of it was just play though, because I got along with Dan real well. But some of it was, hey, you need to relax. You see what I?m doing to you? This is kinda what you?re doing to other people. I just wanted to put him in the other g...
Matt Hughes Interview

Former Welterweight champ Matt Hughes is currently preparing for his fight against current champion Matt Serra after finishing the filming of TUF 6, on which Hughes was a coach. In this interview, Hughes discusses Frank Trigg, his upcoming fight against Serra, PRIDE fighters, steroids, and more. Ben Zeidler: How?s it going Matt?Matt Hughes: Going great, how about you?BZ: Can?t complain, it?s almost the weekend.MH: (Laughs) When I?m not training, it?s always the weekend.BZ: My first taste of UFC was your second fight with Trigg, and it was the reason I became involved in MMA, so thank you for that. Can you just talk a little bit about that fight?MH: Frank is one of those guys who likes to run his mouth before the fight, but I didn?t let it get to me. I don?t know why he doesn?t like me, but he doesn?t and I don?t like him because he always runs his mouth. Prior to the fight, he got really close to me and his lips almost touched mine, I don?t know if he was trying to kiss me or wha...

Around The Horn

There's a ton of fallout after the HUGE UFC 76 event...so let's get at it!Sherdog is reporting that Mauricio Rua entered the fight with a knee injury and was not 100%. Interestingly enough, Shogun's knee had nothing to do with the third round rear naked choke applied by Forrest Griffin. Either way, it hampered his training to a certain degree and didn't allow him to execute the stomps he loves but isn't allowed to use anyway. He's not expected to disappoint fans again until at least early 2008.MMA News is reporting that Chuck Liddell is in fact NOT retiring and may be looking at a fight with Shogun. Reports place him in the gym on Monday, four days from now. I hate to admit it, but he doesn't look hungry like the old Liddell used to. Maybe him and Cro Cop can start a club with Wanderlei Silva and they can call it "I was really good two years ago."MMA Junkie is reporting that Matt Hughes "has one or two more fights left in him." Well, let's see, that would account for ...

Matt Hughes Confronts Referee Mario Yamasaki After Fight
2007-09-19 16:54:00
It has been stated that after the recent EliteXC Robbie Lawler versus Murilo Ninja Rua fight, Matt Hughes ran into the ring and started yelling / pointing his finger at Mario Yamasaki.  Apparently before the fight Mario told both fighter’s corners that if someone was knocked out, that he would stop the fight immediately.  After Ninja Rua went down, Robbie Lawler (who was cornered by Matt Hughes) dropped some serious bombs on Rua.  Hughes felt that the fight should have been ended earlier, as Yamasaki allegedly said would be the case if someone dropped.  Instead, Ninja took a lot of unnecessary damage, which set Hughes off, even though it was his fighter’s opposition.   Here’s a video of the event - not the best quality YouTube Direktvideo link
Which Schools Dominate The UFC?

As with any sport, the way to win has developed over time. In baseball, good pitching used to rule the day whereas now, teams rely on sluggers to pound the ball to victory. In basketball, quick passes and good defense used to win championships. Now, deadly shooting and high-flying moves do the trick. The same goes for a sport like Mixed Martial Arts. I've defined the sport into three main categories during its short history, with a different school of fighting dominating the game, eventually ending at the hybridized style we see from almost every fighter today. It doesn't take an expert to figure out that Gracie Jiu Jitsu (a slight variation on classic Jiu Jitsu), as utilized by Royce Gracie, was the single most imposing force in early UFC. This style, based on joint locks and body control, was perfect for smaller fighters facing much larger and stronger opponents. Royce highlighted the style's strengths during a fight with Dan Severn, in which he submitted the man 70 pounds his h...
