Another Tough Right-Hander: Chris Young Keeps Matt Kemp On The Bench?
2008-04-13 04:38:00 Is it official yet? Has Dodgers OF Juan Pierre been declared an everyday player? Last night, Dodgers' manager Joe Torre sat Matt Kemp against last season's Nl Cy Young winner, Jake Peavy, one of the best right-handed pitchers in baseball. While I do not believe you sit your best hitter against any pitcher, I cannot argue that Peavy is a tough one. Tonight, Kemp is again on the bench against a right-hander. This time, though, it is softer-tossing Chris Young. Is there really any reason for sitting Kemp? Has he gotten on the wrong side of Torre? A couple of other notes from the start of tonight's Padres/Dodgers game: Jackie Chan threw out the 1st pitch to Andruw Jones. Jones looked gigantic next to Chan. Either Chan is really small or Jones is a monster. Raphael Furcal lead-off with a HR. Juan Pierre followed with a first-pitch slap bunt to third for the 1st out of the game. Andre Ethier is batting third. &...

Is There Room For Matt Kemp?
2008-03-10 07:53:00 Once again, the Dodgers will have to juggle their lineup as a combination of youth ready to breakthrough will compete against high-priced veterans. The Dodgers took advantage of Spring Training on Sunday by having Andruw Jones at designated hitter, while Matt Kemp got the start in centerfield. Matt Kemp blasted his second homerun of the spring, a three-run shot, as he continues to make a case...

A Look At Matt Kemp
2008-02-04 23:04:00 You may recall that I ranked Matt Kemp 13th among all outfielders back on January 12th. Let's dig into that a little further. The projection: .300-17-76-83-24 in 517 ABs. That'd be worth $18.77 in my valuation system, less than Torii...

Padres Targeting Matt Kemp?
2007-11-14 16:16:00 As always, Tom Krasovic has the scoop on the Padres. Free agents Geoff Blum and Milton Bradley are not expected back. Blum wanted to return but the Padres are going to pass. Blum is likely to sign with Houston. The Padres may try a combo of Scott Hairston and Chase Headley in left field next year. Wouldn't it make more sense to push Kevin Kouzmanoff out there? It'll probably be a moot point, as the Padres are hoping to sign Geoff Jenkins. Krasovic tantalizes us by not elaborating on this tidbit: Responding to Colletti's preference for veterans, the Padres are contemplating three-team trade scenarios that would bring them young Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp. In my opinion, any kind of deal that nets the Padres Kemp would have to involve Headley. The Padres may offer Andruw Jones a one-year, $17MM deal. However Scott Boras is still acting like Jones' 2007 didn't happen. showad();

Angels and Dodgers Battling For Miguel Cabrera
2007-11-14 05:02:00 Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post says the Dodgers and Angels are leading the pack in the Miguel Cabrera derby. Four other clubs are said to be in the mix. The Marlins will continue to field offers and hope to trade Cabrera at the Winter Meetings in a few weeks. Both the Dodgers and Angels are also in the mix for Alex Rodriguez. Scott Boras must love Cabrera messing up his market. A friend of Tommy Lasorda's told me today that Lasorda puts the Dodgers' chances of signing A-Rod around 25%. From the Angels, the Marlins want Howie Kendrick, Nick Adenhart, another pitcher, and an outfielder. Now that's a tall order! Ervin Santana or Joe Saunders could be in the mix. Maybe the Marlins like Terry Evans, Nathan Haynes, or Reggie Willits as well. The Dodgers are being asked to pony up four of Chad Billingsley, Clayton Kershaw, Andy LaRoche, James Loney, and Matt Kemp. Capozzi suggests the Dodgers would probably only include one of the pitchers.&...

Dodgers Serious About Andruw Jones
2007-10-30 22:18:00 Bill Shaikin has a small note in today's column: Scott Boras is believed to consider the Dodgers a more serious contender for center fielder Andruw Jones than for Alex Rodriguez. It's not the first time we've seen the Dodgers linked to Jones; David O'Brien suggested it several weeks ago. Ned Colletti, you may recall, wasn't exactly thrilled with Scott Boras a year ago when J.D. Drew unexpectedly opted out. But it sounded like much of his anger was directed at Drew. Boras seems to disagree with the notion that Jones should come with a significant price cut this winter. Before the season he was talking about $20MM annually. He'd still want at least $15MM per year. The signing could leave the Dodgers with an outfield of Juan Pierre, Jones, Matt Kemp, and Andre Ethier. One of the last two could be peddled, and the team might have soured on Kemp a bit. How about Kemp for Miguel Tejada? showad();

Sunday Morning Santana
2007-09-30 17:40:00 Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe discusses the names being thrown around for Johan Santana. As well as the Kemp/Kershaw for Santana, Cafardo quotes an AL Executive: One AL executive theorized, "There are a few teams who could match up with the Twins. Would the Yankees deal Melky Cabrera and an Ian Kennedy for Santana? How about Boston? Would they send a Clay Buchholz and a Jacoby Ellsbury for him? The Mets? There are few teams who could handle the paycheck you'd have to give Santana and also be able to part with key prospects."If that logic is correct, it narrows the list of suitors considerably. MLBTR readers made the astute point in the Kemp/Kershaw comments that if a team is going to give up two Major League-ready prospects, the deal would be contingent on a re-signing of Santana. A one year rental is most likely not going to appeal to any GM handing over otherwise untouchable commodities such as a Buchholz/Ellsbury or a Kennedy/Cabrera or a Kemp/Kershaw. W...

Dodgers Willing To Trade Matt Kemp?
2007-09-26 22:07:00 Matt Kemp is an incredibly valuable player. Some would argue he's worth more than $50MM over the next three seasons of his career, and he'll cost a few million bucks. Then there's Bill Plaschke, who feels Kemp's power and speed "have been negated by silly at-bats and baserunning mistakes." By my calculation Kemp would have to make 742 baserunning mistakes per year to negate his .331/.364/.509 line. Plaschke has insider sources indicating that the Dodgers think their best chance to win would be to trade a very good young player like Kemp for a veteran. U.S.S. Mariner recently noted just how dangerous the Dodgers' recent brand of "pro-veteran entitlement" can be. The question then becomes: which teams match up for Kemp? The Dodgers seem to want a veteran position player, and I imagine the guy would have to be under contract for at least two seasons and probably three. Third base and the outfield corners might be the o...

Thoughts On Matt Kemp
2007-08-25 08:15:00 Let's talk Matt Kemp. The 23 year-old plays right field and sometimes bats third for the Dodgers, with an emphasis on starting against southpaws. He's not an everyday player, as L.A. also has Luis Gonzalez, Andre Ethier, and Juan Pierre. Gonzo and Pierre each make about $7.5 million this year, which explains why they could possibly start over Kemp. "); // --> If you look at the numbers, you have to wonder why the Dodgers ever sit Kemp. He's hit lefties, he's hit righties. He's hit at home and on the road. He hasn't slumped, consistently posting an OPS of at least .867 each month. What's the deal, Grady? If he'd ignored salaries and tenure, Kemp could be leading the Dodgers in home runs right now. Is Kemp really a .333 hitter? Of course not. Most guys aren't. I'd argue that he's not even a .300 hitter, and is more likely to settle in around .270 given a full 550 AB season without a disproportionate batch o...
