UFC 83: Georges St Pierre vs Matt Serra II Betting Odds and Analysis
2008-03-10 16:59:00 Will lightening strike twice? Most observers of this match up say it was a "fluke" outcome the first time around. Excuses for GSP were popping up everywhere. No excuse was needed, he got cracked by a very good fighter. Serra caught him - created an advantage - maintained his attack until it was finished. It's what can happen in any fight with such skilled fighters.Unfortunately, it's my job to decide what the odds of it happening again might be!The main change I see in this match up has been GSP's training and attitude. Between working with Jackson's stable and refocusing, he appears to have the right level of respect for this fight. After seeing his second defeat of Hughes is don't think we need to discuss his skills.Matt this time is coming in with much less momentum and his fighting condition after recovering from surgery is simply unknown until fight night.Possible outcomes for this fight go something like this: (Assumes Serra is in good fight condition)Decision: 20% chance...

The event will be the first that the UFC holds in Canada, and is tentatively scheduled for April 19 at the Bell Centre.” Serra told Winnipeg Sun, “Let me tell you about a little movie called Rocky IV. A little Italian guy goes over to Russia to fight a big Russian experiment named Drago. “Now, a little Italian guy goes to Canada to fight the big Canadian experiment named frickin’ GSP. It’s a monster movie. I want to be in that movie. I want to be Rocky.” Check out the NBC Sport int...

St. Pierre-Serra To Headline UFC 83
2008-01-05 16:16:00 Montreal will not just hold their first UFC event in April -- they'll host their first title fight too, according to Mike Chiappetta at NBCSports.com.Matt Serra and Georges St. Pierre will meet for the UFC welterweight title during an April event in Montreal, Serra confirmed to NBCSports.com on Friday. The 33-year-old UFC welterweight champion upset St. Pierre for the title with a first-round TKO in April 2007, and had been scheduled to defend his crown against Matt Hughes in Decmeber. But following the escalation of their rivalry during the filming of the most recent Ultimate Fighter season, Serra suffered a herniated disc, forcing him to pull out of their scheduled UFC 79 match.St. Pierre stepped in to replace Serra, and outclassed the former champion, finishing him with a second-round armbar to become the interim champion. Ten Greatest UFC Upsets
2007-12-27 08:52:00 What started as a freak occurrence has seemingly turned into a spiraling epidemic as the best of today?s UFC fighters are going down in a blaze of eight-sided glory. After the year we?ve had in this sport I must approach every pay-per-view with nervous anticipation. It really is true: Anything can happen. An article by MMA Mania's Jesse Holland. With that in mind I present my list of the ten greatest UFC upsets:10. Randy Couture vs. Vitor Belfort: UFC 15At UFC 15, relative newcomer Randy Couture was set to face Vitor Belfort in a match that many experts compared to the ancient practice of feeding Christians to the lions. Couture had only two fights under his belt while Belfort was 4-0 in the Octagon. Not only was he undefeated, Belfort had four straight (T)KO?s and never had a match go longer than two minutes.Randy was supposed to be a cakewalk for the invincible Brazilian but it was Couture who earned the TKO stopping Belfort with strikes shortly after eight minutes. They would fa...

2007 Year In Review
2007-12-23 19:10:00 Here we go! With MMA gaining so much momentum over the past few years, UFC has debuted a three hour show of the UFC?s BEST of 2007,taking a look back at the most exciting fights of the past year. The UFC continues to be consistent by offering great PPVs, free events, and their blockbuster show, "The Ultimate Fighter." I will review the UFC?s BEST of 2007, giving you insight and my thoughts on the fights. Now let?s get to the knock down, drag out year that was 2007. An article by Don DavenportTyson Griffin vs. Frankie EdgarUFC 67: ALL OR NOTHING February 3, 2007 Both fighters exchanged punches early, feeling each other out and eventually leading to a clinch. Edgar faked a takedown and landed some punches which lead to a takedown of Griffin. Griffin attempted a guillotine choke which Edgar managed to escape and gain side control. Griffin got out of side control and slammed Edgar down hard. Both fighters wrestled back to the feet where Edgar dominated with strikes, and then Edgar got ...

Window Of Opportunity For St. Pierre, Hughes
2007-12-16 20:57:00 Matt Hughes and Georges St. Pierre gained a unique window of opportunity for the Welterweight Championship when Matt Serra suffered a training injury to his lower back. I.W.F made the correct prediction for UFC President Dana White to schedule Hughes-St. Pierre III rubber match, giving both men the opportunity to end the trilogy and win the championship. Hughes-St. Pierre III will be an explosive battle with contrasting styles -- it's a battle which has resulted in a different outcome each time. At UFC 50, Hughes defeated St. Pierre in the first round with a slick armbar submission to win the vacant Welterweight Championship. At UFC 65, St. Pierre defeated Hughes in the second round with a brutal and decisive TKO. In this, the finale, which fighter will execute their game plan better? An IWF original by Don DavenportHughes stated on "The Ultimate Fighter Finale" that "I would not have taken this fight unless I thought I was going to win. I have enough time to prepare for Georges ...

UFC 79 To Feature Hughes-GSP III For Interim
2007-11-25 18:21:00 Exactly one day BEFORE the announcement of the Hughes-St. Pierre Interim Title fight, IWF reported the following: "If I were White, I would consider holding Hughes-St. Pierre III now, with the winner receiving a title shot. Hughes and St. Pierre will fight each other again soon enough, so it could make sense to get it out of the way now." Dana White must read IWF, because hours later, the blockbuster was booked. In the UFC, when one door closes, another opens, and on December 29th, that adage will ring true once against when Matt Hughes battles Georges St. Pierre for the interim UFC Welterweight Championship in the main event of UFC 79: Nemesis, at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.St-Pierre replaces UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Serra, who was forced to withdraw from his bout with Hughes last week due to a herniated disc in his back.?Obviously, the loss of Matt Serra was brutal, but the great thing about the UFC is that we can put together great fights like Hugh...

Matt Hughes versus Matt Serra UFC 79 Fight Off!
2007-11-24 20:45:00 According to a recent UFC announcement, Matt Serra sustained an injury earlier this week in training for his upcoming UFC 79 fight against Matt Hughes. While training at his Long Island NY gym, Serra fell to his knees in excruciating pain and was rushed to the hospital. Serra suffered a herniated disc in his lower back - for those of you who are unfamiliar with this type of injury, the pain can be crippling - especially if it’s pinches the sciatic nerve. “This is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do,” said Serra. “I’ve never had a back injury before; I could hardly get off the MRI table. There is no way I can train through this, and I’m devastated, especially because this was such an important fight. I was looking forward to fighting Matt Hughes. All my training was going phenomenally until Monday – All I can do now is to get better and to fight again as soon as possible.” Chuck Liddell vs. Wanderlei Silva will still be on for UFC 79. As for a replacemen...

Serra Pulls Out Of UFC 79
2007-11-23 14:48:00 Due to herniated discs from a training injury, Matt Serra has been forced to pull out of his upcoming bout with former champ Matt Hughes.Serra was involved in a routine training regiment when he fell to the floor in pain. Later MRIs revealed the herniated discs in his lower back. ?This is the hardest thing I?ve ever had to do,? said Serra. ?I?ve never had a back injury before; I could hardly get off of the MRI table. There is no way I can train through this, and I?m devastated, especially because this was such an important fight. I was looking forward to fighting Matt Hughes. All my training was going phenomenally until Monday ? All I can do now is to get better and to fight again as soon as possible.?Hopefully, White will book a Welterweight contender against Hughes as to keep Hughes busy and not diminish the excellent star quality of this December card. If I were White, I would consider holding Hughes-St. Pierre III now, with the winner receiving a title shot. Hughes and St. Pi...

Matt Serra blog on Tuf 6 Episode 7 - 01 Nov 2007 09:39:49pm
2007-11-01 22:39:00 By Matt Serra UFC Welterweight champion I really thought the way Matt Hughes dumped on Daniel Barrera after last week?s fight was awful. The accusations Matt made about Barrera being scared were off base. Barrera, what he lacked in skill, he made up for in heart and effort. He wasn?t scared. He ate a ton of shots. He?s new to this, and you have to expect some growing pains in this sport. I think Hughes is taking the fights on this show a little too personally. It should be all about the guys on his team competing and leaving here better fighters, not about his name in the center of the Octagon. He said it on an earlier episode, ?I?m really competitive, and if I can?t win, I won?t play.? Saying he wanted to leave the show because he was so frustrated sounds like he doesn?t want to play anymore. His temper tantrum aimed towards Blake Bowman aside, Mac Danzig showed a great deal of maturity in dealing with his teammates to this point. Ray Longo said it best when we were watching t...

LIDDELL-SILVA IS ON
2007-10-24 04:56:00 Las Vegas, NV (USA) ? For years, UFC fight fans have speculated about the outcome of a historic dream matchup between two legendary figures in the sport of mixed martial arts, Chuck Liddell and Wanderlei Silva. Tonight, on Spike TV?s 2007 Scream Awards, UFC President Dana White announced that this dream will finally become a reality when UFC and PRIDE former champions Chuck ?The Iceman? Liddell and ?The Axe Murderer? Wanderlei Silva face each other at UFC 79: NEMESIS live from the Mandalay Bay Events Center Saturday, December 29, 2007.?Chuck and Wanderlei ? two legends in the sport ? will face off in the most important match of their careers at UFC 79,? said Dana White, UFC President. ?Chuck and Wanderlei have both wanted this fight for as long as they can remember, and this is definitely the fight that fans have waited for years to see. Is The Ultimate Fighter Good For The Sport?
2007-09-17 20:42:00 Stroll into just about any Sherdog forum, wait for a white belt to say something stupid, and then watch as the rest of the posters blast him with chants of "TUF NOOB." The logic behind this pedantic insult is that the white belt (a relatively new writer) has only been watching since the UFC went mainstream (The Ultimate Finale 1). Is it such a bad thing to have recently jumped on the bandwagon? After all, no sport can maintain its popularity without some semblance of turnover among its fans. In the eyes of veteran Sherdoggers, The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) reality series has done nothing for the sport except cheapen it and make it accessible to legions of idiots.I disagree, and I actually think that TUF has done more for the sport than almost anything else. I'd rank it right up there with the PRIDE buyout, showing live events on SpikeTV, and the UFC 40 fight between Tito Ortiz and Ken Shamrock. The cable television finale of the first season did a 1.9 share (HUGE) and brought us what ...

Which Schools Dominate The UFC?
2007-09-14 21:22:00 As with any sport, the way to win has developed over time. In baseball, good pitching used to rule the day whereas now, teams rely on sluggers to pound the ball to victory. In basketball, quick passes and good defense used to win championships. Now, deadly shooting and high-flying moves do the trick. The same goes for a sport like Mixed Martial Arts. I've defined the sport into three main categories during its short history, with a different school of fighting dominating the game, eventually ending at the hybridized style we see from almost every fighter today. It doesn't take an expert to figure out that Gracie Jiu Jitsu (a slight variation on classic Jiu Jitsu), as utilized by Royce Gracie, was the single most imposing force in early UFC. This style, based on joint locks and body control, was perfect for smaller fighters facing much larger and stronger opponents. Royce highlighted the style's strengths during a fight with Dan Severn, in which he submitted the man 70 pounds his h...

GSP To Get Title Shot In Canada
2007-08-29 04:15:00 In Canada's first-ever UFC event (the expansion continues...), former Welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre will get the opportunity to regain his title. He'll face the winner of the Hughes-Serra bout in a fight that is expected to take place at the Bell Centre sometime during the spring.During the announcement-filled post-UFC 74 conference, White announced that St. Pierre would get the title shot (as was expected) and that it would come in St. Pierre's home country (not as expected). The UFC is doing an excellent job of utilizing fighter's hometowns in order to boost buys and attendance. Attendance is less of an issue considering recent events have been sold out, but total exposure is still something that White and the Fertitta seek. One look at the use of Bisping in England-based events is enough evidence of this trend. The UFC can't lose with this set up, as no matter who St. Pierre gets, it's the second or third fight in a series. Statistics show that rematches and ...

UFC 73: Silva, Sherk Retain Titles
2007-07-08 17:35:00 UFC 73 Stacked certainly had its ups and downs. Labeled "best card in the history of combat sports," it failed to deliver what most fans anticipated so greatly and failed to fulfill the hype that was built around it.The event took place Saturday, July 7, 2007 at the ARCO Arena in Sacramento, California and had been regarded as UFC's most "stacked" card to date, no pun intended. The cards featured two title fights, one with UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva and the other with lightweight champion Sean Sherk, both crowned at UFC 64. Last night, they defended their titles against former King of Pancrase Nathan Marquardt and former WEC champion Hermes Franca, respectively. Former PRIDE Heavyweight Champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, also seen by many to be the #2 HW in the world, made his UFC debut against Heath Herring, whom he had already defeated twice before in PRIDE. UFC 73 also featured a light heavyweight showdown between former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Tito Ortiz an...
