Tata Motors: A matter of pride

Mary Ruefle: "A Minor Personal Matter"
2009-09-15 19:56:00
Halfway between prose-poems and essays, the offbeat musings in Mary Ruefle's The Most of It (Wave Books, 2008) take some mundane incident--picking out a garden bench, for instance, or drinking a glass of water--as the starting point for an increasingly strange chain of associations. The original question becomes lost in the narrator's argument with herself about action versus inaction. As in a Platonic dialogue, the only enlightenment we take away is an awareness of how muddled our concepts are. Or, to use a more modern example, Ruefle is like the toddler in the "Buttons and Mindy" cartoons who perpetually reduces adults to sputtering frustration by responding "Why?" to everything they say. Just when this aimless demolition seems to have gone on too long, Ruefle ends the book with the astonishing piece "A Half-Sketched Head", in which we see that the preceding diversions served the same purpose as Zen koans, to humble the chattering mind and make room for spiritual clarity.Rather ...
Does Manufacturing Matter?

Need for Peavy: Does It Matter?
2009-08-26 20:47:00
Heading into his fifth inning of work in his third rehab start, things were looking good for Jake Peavy and his pending return to the White Sox. He was throwing pain-free and like a guy ready to take the mound in New York this Saturday against the Yankees. And then he was hit with a line drive off his throwing elbow. He finished the inning, but you knew the swelling to follow would put the decision on his first start on hold. So now Saturday is up in the air. Fortunately, or unfortunately, it doesn't really matter....
Yes, Levi, Obama?s Words Do Matter (He said so himself)

In my latest post reminding readers that while as presidential candidate, Barack Obama promised he’d hold on the line on federal spending, yet delivered instead a flood of red ink as president, I noted that I may well have “belabor[ed] this point overmuch.”  But, it is a point which bears repetition. 2009-08-15 01:11:00
One of the interesting things about the exposure that comes from this blog is that my firm gets contacted by all sorts of people with China law problems. This is mostly good because it can lead to real work. This is also good because even when it does not lead to real work, it provides great blog fodder. Like today. A while ago (I am going to be really vague on everything here for obvious reasons) I got an email from someone whose relative had been arrested in China on a criminal law violation. The email went something (again, I am changing things to hide any potential identifier, but the gist is there) like this: A family member was doing business with China as a middle man. He was getting his goods from all over Europe and the United States and then selling them in China. They turned out to be fakes. Without knowing this, he went to China on other business and some of the businesses that got the fakes from him had him arrested. There is no way to reach the people that sold...

Michael Jackson asked us: Does it matter if you're black or white?
2009-06-26 13:00:00
In remembering Michael Jackson, I am republishing a column I wrote back in 1991. So many people loved his music but were bewildered by his appearance. This is a reflection on how he made me think about race and identity.Michael Jackson's new album, ''Dangerous,'' premiered at No. 1 on Billboard's pop chart Dec. 9, and the album's hit single, Black or White, is being played constantly on the airwaves. But does it matter if you're black or white?I would like to think that Jackson's message is sincere. But I don't. It's hard to believe it is when he has altered his black features through plastic surgery and apparently made his skin tone two or three shades lighter. His song attempts...

surprises matter in a linear world
2009-04-27 17:54:00
Robert Bound writing in April's Monocle has a great piece about the problem with predictive software and music services; instead of introducing us to surprising artists and bands, we get something we could easily predict. Apple's Genius is according to Noble an "over-used and under earned title".Deeper into his piece he hints at the real beauty of newspapers, surprise."The shift to reading newspapers online isn't just sad for vanishing printworks and the demise of the most unbeatably usable and portable of media materials-paper-but it means reading in an accident free way. Without the need to fold and turn, a readers' key interests of business news, match reports and film reviews can be navigated seamlessly, but without stumbling upon the story of the British pub-sign painter or the intriguing report from the martial arts academy in Sichuan."While it's not something that can save the newspaper industry, but an overlooked insight that makes them unique.Posted by Ed Cotton

I keep all my paperclips in a little, weird coffee cup on my desk. I've got both big and small paperclips in there. I never touch the coffee cup, or the paper clips, unless I need a paperclip, in which case I pick up just one. Just one at a time.Yet, despite all those elaborate precautions, every paperclip in that cup is somehow linked to every other paperclip in that cup, sometimes two or three or four combined in one, so that when I want to clip papers together, I've got to go through this elaborate unwinding process to try to get a clip. And I have identified the cause of this problem. Since it's physically impossible for inanimate objects to link themselves together, I have concluded that it is now scientifically proven that (a) paperclips are sentient, and (b) they do not want to be separated. Which now makes me feel guilty that I have, all my life, been separating paperclip families, breaking up paperclip homes, tormenting paperclip moms and dads and kids, and otherwise...

Why Inventories Matter

In the recently released estimates of 4th quarter Gross Domestic Production (GDP) numbers, the less-than-expected 3.8% drop is not evidence of business strength. In fact it’s the opposite. Higher inventories ordinarily result from production increases, which add to ...

China: Why PR And The Government Matter.
2008-11-23 17:12:00
In its post "More Sympathy for Microsoft," China Hearsay, very starkly does an excellent job highlighting why businesses should not/cannot ignore public relations and the Chinese government when making their key decisions. The post is on how Microsoft is getting so much heat from its decision to momentarily black out computer screens of those using counterfeit Microsoft software and how that tactic would almost certainly have gone better had Microsoft secured prior government approval before engaging it. The article also implicitly argues that Microsoft should have gone to greater lengths in explaining itself to China's public.
Pennies Matter

One hundred million pennies for your thoughts on the latest display in Rockefeller Center. New York first lady Silda Wall Spitzer joined hundreds of public school children on Monday to unveil a mass of $1 million in pennies collected for charity. The display, called the Penny Harvest Field, includes an estimated 100 million pennies ? plus a few nickels, dimes and quarters that slipped in by mistake. The exhibit, 30 feet by 165 feet, as long as a city block, is the culmination of the nonprofit organization Common Cents? 17th annual Penny Harvest, a national educational program designed to teach children about their value as contributors to society. Hundreds of thousands of city students from more than 800 schools spent the weeks between Oct 22 and Thanksgiving going door to door and collecting the pennies, which will be donated to organizations of their choice for causes such as protecting the environment and helping the elderly. The exhibit was designed by architect James Polshek and...

China: When Cultural Differences Matter.
2008-11-05 03:20:00
Regular readers know that I am not a big fan of going overboard on the need to know Chinese culture to do the typical business deal. Better to be a good businessperson than to know what color flowers to bring to a funeral. But, in other contexts, like managing an enterprise, or selling consumer products, culture can be everything. An article in today's Wall Street Journal, entitled, "Lenovo Goes Global, but Not Without Strife," does an excellent job in highlighting this. The article is about Lenovo, but it is really about how cultural differences between the West and China can impact the workings of a business. No doubt, anyone who has done much East-West business will be able to relate to at least some of the following: -- "You don't want everyone saying 'Yes, Yes, Yes' all the time," says Mr. Amelio, a brawny former college wrestler. "You want them to be able to smack you upside the head and say 'Hey, I've got a better idea.'" -- Conference calls were difficult as ...
Why Standards Matter
2008-11-02 10:52:00
A month ago, the Why BPEL Matters article was posted on IT|Redux, and triggered a wave of discussions rarely seen in the little BPM microcosm. Initially, they focused on arcane mathematical considerations supported by pseudo-scientific arguments on both sides of the fence (here and there). But as the debate progressed, what is at stake for those opposed to BPEL as standard process execution language became clear, and the motivations for supporting their side of the argument painfully evident: disregard for the value of standards, and focus on the needs of vendors rather than the interest of customers (Cf. this article and that one). Let's take a closer look at what this healthy debate brought under the spotlight. The rest of the article is available at BPMLab.org.
